Raise your hand if you said before the draft we were OK with CBs? We do need 4-5 decent CBs, but we already have:
1-Butler-2nd rd pick
2-Wheatley-2nd rd pick
3-Wilhite-4th rd pick
4-Bodden-New big FA deal
5-Springs-last years FA plug who cost alot of $$.
So, who goes? Anyone seeing a trade? Not me. I think this pick is BB admitting that there was a mistake made somewhere and someone is gettin FIRED. Unless we drafted a 1st rd gunner and got rid of Slater I'd say we mis-spent some of Krafty's cheese dont cha think? I dont think we were beat with any 6-WR sets last year.....

Side note, anyone else get a sneaking suspicion BB and McDaniels were both playing a TEBOW game?? I simply cant believe we went into tonite thinking that we would draft a CB at 27....Am I alone? We will never know....

I vote Springs, in a big way.

As for whether this was planned, there are a couple of possibilities. Maybe those who said the Pats wanted Matthews or Gresham were right, so BB didn't perceive value left. Or maybe Reiss was right that CB was the plan all along with Kareem Jackson. As the draft shook out, CB is probably the position with the biggest talent dropoff heading into round 2. And the only kind of CB who would improve the team was a 3rd quality, starting-caliber player, not just another depth guy. So 1st round or never?

I wanted Kyle Wilson, but either way I'm happy at the thought of 3 genuine quality CBs. That used to be a total luxury in the NFL, but not any more. They'll be on the field together plenty.

McCourty likely dooms the roster fates of 2008 draft picks Terrence Wheatley and Matthew Slater. Wheatley has been a disappointment since being picked in the second-round and is as of right now, the 6th CB on a team that traditionally keeps five. Slater has made a living as a gunner specialist the last two seasons, but McCourty performs that role at a higher level and offers much more roster value as a 2nd/3rd CB.

I need to hang out over here today, the other board is, well, less than awe inspiring.

I assume it will be Springs who goes unless they give up on Wheatley, which I hope they don't. I'm thrilled with the pick - and not just because I when I circled him on "my board" I had to extend the circle around the "1" I had next to him as my top pick.

Starting potential CB in a passing league who loves the game, is a leader, a top ST player and we got the missing #3 back. What's not to like ?

When you bring that kind of logic to the board....hang out as much as you like !!

I watched the draft on tape delay as I was coaching my kids' soccer practice - needless to say I was STUNNED when I checked the board after we picked, about an hour after it happened. I loved the pick and the board was in a meltdown.

I want men, not boys. I want players who love the game, not those who show up for the paycheck. We got one at a need position (anyone who doubts it was a need needs to rewatch the season). We have a really good looking, young, secondary now and added an excellent person to the locker room and got a serious ST player too. It's all good.

Slater, we spent our first round pick on replacing Slater as the gunner.........

Thats it, this kid won't see the field any other time.

Wow, you're that high on Wilhite, huh? That's encouraging! :D

Thank you BelichickFan for your rational posts. I'm staying here today as well.
I have to admit that I knew nothing about this guy and I laughed when we made the pick.
I really like the looks of our secondary now. Young fast and athletic, a far cry from Otis and Deltha. That 3rd we picked up is a really great move as there will be some very good football players available at 90.
Tonight will be fun.

No doubt, getting that 3rd was a big move, just by moving back 5 spots they picked up pick 90. I'm starting to become encouraged by McCourty, I think he'll make an impact right away.

As the previous poster said, we need men who love football. That's how we used to break hearts in the playoffs. McCourty seems like a battle-tested man. I'm in.

After Mathews and Gresham went off the board and Houston took Reiss' Kareem Jackson pick, I thought Kyle Wilson was the guy we'd take. I guessed the wrong guy. The major differance is Kyle had a lot more bench reps. Devin was equal or faster in all directions though.

I'm glad Bill was willing to admit Wheatley was a bad pick in 2008. It takes most teams three or four years to correct a bad pick from the first or second. Springs is a goner as well as Arrington or Lockett and also Wheatley by the end of camp. I think I'd keep Arrington over Wheatley for special teams.

Who just lost their job? I'd say Jax's GM, my god when you make the Raiders look good you know you did something horribly wrong.

On the Pats I'd say Springs is a goner for sure & most likely Wheatley as well.

Springs gets my vote as well with Wheatley a close second.

Random thoughts: This year I haven't had the time to follow draft prospects unfortunately therefore our 1st round selection of a CB was surprising, but more in a head-smacking what-was-I-thinking kind of way. It's one of our biggest need positions and McCourty sounds like just what the doctor ordered. No celebrity baggage and loves the game, has speed and sounds like the type of player who's willing to work hard; all qualities that lay the groundwork for development of a true contributor.

I'm really looking forward to tonight!

Springs is the 12th highest paid player on the team, but is now looking like a #4 CB who doesn't play ST. I don't think he has any trade value with that salary so he will probably be cut out of TC.

Please stop posting.

Is he going to start ahead of Butler or Bodden?? No, is he going to play nickel ahead of Springs or Whilite or Wheatley?? The Pats system is very difficult to pick up, how much did Butler or Chung play last year? This was an absolute giant reach.

Springs is a goner ....thats near a certainty

I think you are right but that puts Springs in the Duane Starks catagory in the "worst signing in history" status doesnt it? I understand they want a safe pick in the first, and we always take a CB somewhere in the draft, AND one DB always gets hurt in camp, but having Wheatley and Wilhite as nickel backs I thought good enough....I'm guessing BB sees an upgrade. Hope he can cover Marshall.

Starks was a trade. Springs was a FA signing just overpaid, but at the time we didn't have anyone to play CB, and safety depth was weak. So they are similar, but I wouldn't put springs in the worst signing category. He wasn't paid that much (ie Thomas)
