Is McCourty 14 draft spots better then Butler draft-wise? If both were rookies, who would win that #2 starting CB spot? I haven't done much analysis on either, but I am interested to hear your opinions.

Re: Any opinions on Butler vs McCourty?

IMO butler. McCourty, is ellis hobbs, thats not a knock on him ( i am a fan of hobbs ) i just see him as a good ST player who will be a pretty good nickle back

butler. i think will be a all pro in a few years

Re: Any opinions on Butler vs McCourty?

I do agree it would be better if a player could focus on mastering one thing instead being a jack of all trades. Pro-bowl CBs aren't also ST demons. If the Pats stick McCourty on ST he'll be losing valuable time to learn the CB position. Butler I think is all but done on ST.

Re: Any opinions on Butler vs McCourty?

I'm not viewing this as a Butler vs. McCourty as much as I'm viewing this as McCourty replacing either Wheatley or Wilhite.

Shouldn't be too hard to do...

That's pretty much it. There is no "vs." here.

Deion Sanders spent ALOT of time with Butler...give this kid time to grow and mature and he is a top corner within 3 years...not Revis Level but going to be a special player.

McCourty won't be blended in the defense too early,he will be a project into the near future but I would not be surprised to see 2 or 3 kick return TDs by this kid,he is a monster in that dept.,Maybe the next DEVIN Hester

They are different players but both have high potential. I think that Butler is a little more athletic looking, a little faster than McCourty. But McCourty's got a great all around game, including special teams, that makes him what BB called a '4 down player'. Butler might be more of a pure cover guy. But both are intelligent and talented players who I expect to contribute to this defense.

We went into last year and this year needing help at corner. We added a first round talent in Butler last year. We added a first round talent in McCourty this year. Add fa Bodden, fa McGowan and our other solid safeties (with 2 top picks in 2008 and 2009) and we have a pretty solid secondary. We also have a dime back in Wilhite, who could develop; he has played some nickel and has started. We even have Wheatley in the last position secondary roster spot.

The secondary still needs some time working together.

But this is the best secondary we have had since 2004.

This is a deep, young secondary who will grow together. Two years from now I could see Chung, Merriweather, Butler, McCourty all starting in the base defense (given they develop "normally") with Wilhite as the nickel back. Units don't necessarily grow together any more in the NFL. This could be a unique situation.

As for the OP, Butler has more "football talent" as was evident by playing 3 ways and having success in all three phases. McCourty is going to be a solid cb/st for this team for a long time.

Do you mean 2003? 2004 was the Samuel/Gay/Troy combo at CB.

Although on 2nd thought, I'm not sure our CBs have performed any better in the 2005-2010 span than that trio did.

Not to be mean but he didn't really start returning until his senior year and he had one touchdown. He is an excellent special teams player not sure about returner quite yet he isn't quite the "monster" Tate was at UNC by far.

Just like when BB built a DL that grew together. He's doing the same with DBs. Now all the spots are filled what next position will he focus on growing?

McCourty is NOT a project because he has NO upside. He did nothing in college. Every receiver he faced was able to get open. He had a total of 5 picks in 4 years at Rutgers. He has never made an impact play on defense. He played significant minutes every year and still has no decent stats to show for it. If he would have come out last year like his twin brother, he would have been a 5 rounder at best. This is simply the worst player we could have drafted!!!
Butler on the other hand was a shutdown corner who nobody threw against his last year in college, and that's why he slipped.

I've seen multiple clips of him taking an int to the house. Stat-wise he's the best tackling CB in the draft.

They do both seem to be two different CBs. McCourty can lineup in the box and take on that slot receiver, TE, or RB. He has no problem hitting someone. Butler is more of a finesse guy. He's faster and has better coverage skills. They should complement each other nicely.

this is great......he can spend time with wheatley, wilhite, and the rest of the secondary flotsam.....

I never thought you drafted in the first round with this intention

One problem with McCourty and KRs, he did it against UConn.

You should check out UConn's KR results this year. Not pretty.

The punt block thing though is much more legit. He did it against various teams.
