Don't laugh, the Patriots always keep the future drafts in mind. I took a quick peak just now and as of now (which obviously a lot changes in a year) there seems to be a TON of guys that would fit the strongside outside linebacker mold we look for in the early going. This very well could affect what we do in this year's draft. I don't think it would deter us from taking someone like Sergio Kindle (who I have us pegged as taking at 22) because I see him as more of a weakside guy. Also keep in mind a top wr or rb (Mark Ingram) could be available when that raiders pick is on the clock! Just some food for thought for those that feel we NEED to draft for need this year.

Agreed.

With the addition of Holt and my opinion of Brandon Tate, I'm now content with addressing WR later in the draft rather than it being a must in the 2nd round because I'm zeroing in on a top flight WR next year to replace Moss.

I found it "interesting" we signed Holt just before the draft, and didn't go after Taylor at all. I really think it's a precursor to what will happen in the draft (no push for a wr unless Bryant falls to us and others don't & a definite push for an outside linebacker within the first two rounds)

Well when, Big Ben gets traded to the Raiders, that pick might not be as good as you hoped. Good thing he'll miss the first 4-6 games.

Though the possibility likely has Al Davis changing his bloomers about six times a day, I think the odds are less than 50/50 it actually happens. The Steelers may well decide to give Ben a chance to redeem himself.

In any case, having Ben at QB doesn't even come close to solving all the Raiders problems and getting them to the 8-8 mark. That will still be a Top 15 or even a Top 10 pick either way.

Crazy Al apparently doesn't want to give up #8, and the Squealers don't want to give up #18 to make it happen. :)

Just take the Best Player Available.

The Patriots can fill needs in FA and in the second round.

Unless of course the BPA is a TE, QB or RB. Then I'm not interested, LOL.

I would take:

Joe Haden
Earl Thomas
Mike Iupati

These are positions we don't have a huge need at, but if those guys are there, and if you have them rated highly, you take them.

I would not at all be surprised to see Mike Iupati taken by the Patriots.

WalterFootball.com: 2011 NFL Mock Draft

They have four WR going in the first half of the first round next year.

In their 2011 mock they have the Pats taking WR Michael Floyd of Notre Dame with the Oakland pick, and then RB Ryan Williams of Virginia Tech with the other first round pick.

I'm with you. WR is a tremendous strength in next year's draft. Could see as many as 5 WRs or more go in the first round. The Holt signing will just get us to that point. If there is someone valuable we could take a WR in the last two rounds.

It has to be DE/OLB this year. With the depth with the need will be too good to pass up.

If we were planning on just "fill[ing] needs in FA" then why not grab Jason Taylor?
Grabbing Torry Holt allows us to not look at wr as a need anymore, but we still have two HUGE needs: outside linebackerS and a defensive end. Both of which can set the edge against the run and apply adequate pass rush.

I saw that. I feel that the Pats had that as well as Brandon Tate's development in mind when signing Torry Holt to a one year deal.
