There have been hundred of posts about how many RFA's were out there for teams to snap up.

How many teams have signed an RFA requiring any compensation?
Of those, how many of these players actually will play for a new team (no match)?
===================

The only team to make an offer sheet to another team's RFA was the Eagles with Mike Bell. The Eagles didn't match.

Yup, and if the Saints match there will be no compensation.

I guess that the RFA process was not very important this year (or ever), other than to force teams to make offers to the players before the draft. I guess that is indeed some protection for the players.

IMO most teams recognize the depth of this year's draft and don't want to give up the picks.

No, Mike Bell was an RFA by the Saints. The Eagles signed him to the offer sheet and the Saints did not match. There was no compensation because that was the level the Saints tendered him at.

There are established Pro Bowl level players who are RFAs this year. You wouldn't give the uncertainty of a draft pick up for that?

Give up high draft picks (figure at least a high 2nd if not 1st for any "established Pro Bowl" guys) plus a massive contract? Don't know about that

Besides, why would any team with such a player give him up for "the uncertainty of draft picks" unless the guy was a scumbag or a problem in the locker room? Your logic cuts both ways

Poison pills. Or they wouldn't want to match the contract.

So what exactly is the value of a high draft pick? Brandon Meriweather? Chad Jackson? Patrick Chung? Daniel Graham? I'd trade them any day for an established player like Sproles or Jackson or Dumervil.

Are you guys crazy? Or has DWwhatshisname hacked your accounts?

I don't see any collusion. The UFA market hasn't been much different than normal. The RFA market has never been very hot, because of the need to pay a draft pick plus the need to pay the big salary.

Draft picks are riskier but MUCH cheaper (an order of magnitude cheaper in many cases.) Miami just gave a contract to Marshall approaching what Haynesworth got last year. Washington didn't have to give up draft picks, but still felt like their "safe UFA signing" was a huge loss. Derrick Burgess was a pro bowler, that too was such a safe free agent pickup, eh?

Plus... you have the uncertainty of the possible lockout in 2011 and/or a return of the cap.

PLUS... next year's draft will suck compared to this year. And next year's UFA class will be MUCH deeper... all those 5 year RFAs who would have been UFAs this year will be UFAs next year. And unless 2011 is uncapped all the 4 year RFAs who would have been UFAs this year will also be UFAs next year. So wait a year and save a pick, plus have a much clearer idea what the cashflow will be.

There are LOTS of valid explanations for this offseason.

32 GMs didn't buy into that logic.

The uncertainty of the labor situation and the salary cap isnt lending itself to signing free agents. Some restricteds are being re-upped by their existing teams but next year, if there is no lock out, is likely to be the biggest year for movement of talent. If you have alot of cheap guys on the roster(see the last couple years rookies)you will be able to afford the bounty. Of course getting them to gel is what counts...And to address value, the use of these picks is spread out on usually a 4 year period, not the 1 year period that is a RFA. This is why even pro bowl players can be had relatively cheaply(draft pick wise) like McNabb.

*sigh*

That's what the offer sheets are for: so that you're not trading specifically for one year of an RFA's services.

Kid, don't drag me into this. If your so damned smart, you tell me how the Pats are going to fill thirteen holes (eight must fill holes) with 12 Draft choices? Go ahead wise guy, why don't you announce your plan. Yep they are backed into a corner and now the Pats have to Draft for need. If you know anything about Pro Football you know that results in reaches and thus, bad Drafts.
We are now officially in Draft for Need mode!

Our 07 Season was stocked with Draft choices from that year wasn't it smiley. The 09 Saints would never sign a FA or Trade for an established player.

Lets talk about bad Draft choices made by the Pats and others....Ready?

Yep you are right. You win I started this. Look, you are entitled to your opinions so I will give you that respect.

Tell me the valid explanations for this terrible off-season so far? I await your reply...,.Unless you are going to use the"They signed their own guys" card. THINK!!! Wouldn't it have been better to sign them at the end of last season or during? You will be surprised to know they could have done that. So we pat the FO on the back for doing the job they were hired to do a few months late, right? O.K.

You are another "The Draft will save the Patriots" guy. Not without some more pieces precious! Please use some common sense. 18% of correct productive picks is a good Draft.
I hope you don't play the horses.

I agree Peppers was way out of bounds. Marshall was pricey but still a good move for the Fins unless you are a homer here. Wembley? Gocong? Jones wasn't better than any RB we have now? A lousy fifth rounder for Holmes is not a bad gamble. Why on earth would we want a Pro Bowler like Cromartie with all of his illegitimate kids! ? But there were more than a few "left on the table" like that because BB is gunshy right now. Why?........Who knows. The pending CAP scenario isn't bothering a lot of our competition.

Now you also contradict yourself by denouncing the 2011 Draft. And yet some of the Cousins here would not have a problem trading into 2011 yet again and we have multiple holes to fill in 2010...while Rome is burning we have been working the fiddle.

Excellent Point.

Sure, but the offer sheet includes the contract extending X amount of years into the future.....Where the CBA could affect value of the contract correct?

Go off the deepend much?

Couple of points

Why does it matter when we take care of are FA so long as we do? I know this is an uncapped year but they obviously still kept a budget. So regardless of when they signed there own guys whether last year or this offseason they still would be taking money from said budget.

The FA market wasn't good and the UFA market and trades had a lot of malcontents so sure you could have made some moves but BB is obviously trying to change the culture in the locker room. As to Marshall you pay him and not Welker and Moss and you are asking for trouble. As to Cromartie are yuo kidding me reffering to him as a pro bowler is a joke he has not looked good since that year and has so much baggage he should be a spokesperson for Samsonite.

13 holes (8 must fills) are you serious with this number please list the 13 holes and the 8 must fills? Maybe there are 13 holes but not that need to be filled with top end talent that probably includes positions like who will be the 5th WR and Back up TE.

Lastly, Might BB be thinking he had a good draft last year and a the year before and that he wants to see the young talent on the field and is going to rely on improving youth to improve this team and will fill in some of the minor holes with FA as we get closer to TC. And I am fully OK with this plan with one exception and that is pass rush as I think he will be relying on a rookie for some of this and that could be asking to much of a rookie.
