Chat replay: Rick Gosselin answered Cowboys and NFL Draft questions | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News

Had some interesting stuff to say. Couple of things I found interesting

1. He'd be shocked if Tebow goes in the 1st round. Even with all the chatter we are hearing of late that he will go in the 1st round

2. Not a deep draft

3. Big Believer in drafting the player not for need

He didn't say he'd be shocked if Tebow goes in the 1st round. He said:

I think Tebow and McCoy have both moved into the second round based on their post-combine performances. It's anybody's guess who will draft Tebow because I think every team will pass on him at least once before he comes off the board. But I do think he'll go to a team with an offensive-minded head coach.

He also didn't say this wasn't a deep draft, he just doesn't see it as being as deep as some say it is:

First off, I don't think this is as deep a draft as it has been portrayed. Some positions are very deep (DT, TE), others not so (QB, HB, interior OL and LB).

Thanks, Gosselin's always interesting. Yet it seems to me he's sending a bit of a muddled message about need/value/BPA. He says:

"I'd say 90 percent of all mistakes on draft day come when a team drafts for need. That means they are leaving better players on the draft board to fill a hole in their lineup. You can never go wrong drafting the best player on your board at the time of your selection."

But yet in response to the question "Is is more important for the cowboys to address the OL or the Secondary with their first pic. Let's say both Earl Thomas and Bruce Campbell are available at 27... Who should the Cowboys select? " he says:

"The value at 27 will be the offensive line because it's much thinner in talent than the defensive backfield."

So there he's not advocating BPA, but rather a strategic approach to value that looks at relative value tradeoffs along with some element of need. I think that's more honest and realistic. Maybe you "never go wrong drafting the best player on your board" at any given pick, but you can't apply that approach to your entire draft.

Actually he did say it about Tebow.. Should read the entire things before correcting other people

Rick Gosselin: The only real surprise would be if Tebow snuck into the first round, but I don't see that happening. "

Second.. Play of words on your end.. To funny.. But from his opinion, the draft is only deep in certain areas.. And the good news, its deep where we need it to be :)

Absolutely.. +1

Regarding WRs:
"The value at wide receiver is in the third round where there may be 8-10 taken"

Lets hope BB doesn't go overboard again trying to find a good TE. Need one that can start and a developmental, or sign a FA TE.

Other needs on defense need addressing first.

Gosslin is best in the 24 hours before the draft when it's not about his understanding or philosophy as a veteran reporter but about the contacts he's amassed and what he's hearing from them...

This drafts depth isn't debatable. It may lean more towards one side of the ball initially but that just pushes other positions deeper. If there are in fact 40+ first round graded players on most boards, which is what Floyd Reese stated last week, this is indeed a deep draft.

His BPA flip flop from one segment of the chat to another is why I always prefer my reporters to tell me what you know, not what you think...

I'll definitely checking for his stuff on Wed and thursday morning..

And I agree.. Last week was great listening to Floyd.. All panel members agreed the Pats should walk away with some talent

I came to that conclusion a while ago even though most people had the Pats taking a WR in round 2. Glad to know I'm not completely crazy.

I've always suspected the reason he was so good is because he had a contact strategically placed within the Cowboys organization that fed him great intel about what the Cowboys were doing and what the Cowboys had learned about what other teams were thinking.

...and that he promised that contact not to post his revealing "final mock" until the day of the draft, to minimize any competitive impact. Seems like that to me, too.

The NFL is a spiderwebb of coaches and personnel men that have been recycled and churned through many various teams. I think most teams know before the draft which direction/players other teams are headed when they get on the clock. Once all this gets fleshed out, the contact passes it along to Goose who fills in any blanks with the pieces rthat fit best.

It makes me wonder if Floyd Reese hasn't let slip where BB is looking closely to some of his old buddies. Maybe the good ship Belichicken has a leak or two.

Although given the lack of numbers in the assistant coaches and in the support staff and the personnel department (under the all controlling everwatching ego that is BB), Floyd may not have time to converse with old friends since he is probably sorting and delivering the mail, keeping the office coffee machines churning out hot joba, changing burned out light bulbs in the hallways and common areas, fixing the copier when it breaks down and running the video tape machines. Versatility and multitasking, that is the BB way at Patriots headquarters.
