Tyson Alualu has traveled tough road toward NFL draft - ESPN Boston

There have been some pretty darn good football players out of Hawaii and Reiss's column makes me really think that this Hybrid DT/DE could be just the exact type of guy Belichick cherishes since he is so versatile almost anywhere in the front 7,at 295 pounds he is a big and fast, more made for the DT/DE.

I wonder if the Pats gamble and not take Alualu at 22 (which is a bit early for his projection - expected between lower 20s and mid 40s pick),will he risk not having him available at 44?,I would think Belichick is looking at this guy pretty closely.

Agree. He looks like a better athlete that Odrick, although 2 inches shorter. 22 is a bit high, but maybe a consideration if they decide to trade out of 22, or at 44 if he lasts.

I'm really intrigued by Alualu. Hopefully we can get him in the 2nd.

Could be the Pats take him. He fits the 4 man front and the 3 man so he is versatile, has a great motor and loves the game. To me, everything I have read and learned tells me he is a Patriot kind of guy. If BB goes more 4 man front, and I see signs he will despite protests here to the contrary, then Brian Price doesn't fit. Pryor was used in the 4 man front last year. Brace is a NT who, with Wilfork on board, can collapse the pocket but isn't a pass rusher. Grady is a penetrator, drafted by the Colts, who can also collapse the pocket. Everything points to collapsing the pocket. So what is needed? An edge rush, preferably from a penetrating monster who can play 4-3 DE.

I could see the Colts take him at 31 if we pass

You don't spend a 1st round pick on a 'tweener' for your system. I wouldn't mind him in the mid to late round 2 territory though.

I just like the way the guy plays. I'd like to see BB trade down from #22 for an earlier 2nd and a 3rd, and then take Alualu with that early second and Te'o-Nesheim in the 3rd.

at 22? you guys have to be kidding me. he's ranked the 18th best DT in my draft book and is 5th round material, which probably does not reflect his true value. yeah, maybe we can use one of our later picks on him but not 22. if bb takes him at 22, my foot is going to find his *****. Pac 10 guys are almost always overrated anyway.

Well put. The goal of getting a good player is to get him CHEAP, not waste a 1st rounder on him.

I'd like to see them get about 8 picks in rounds 2-4 that way they can't screw this thing up.

i did some research. i don't think this guy would fit a 3-4 scheme. they said he would be much better in a 4-3

Yes, but that's like saying he can't bake bread but would be excellent as a pastry chef.

He's one of a rare handful who has played 3-4 DE in college, his size is the same as LeKevin Smith, so he's not ideal, and may not be your starter or would need to work in a rotation, but he can indeed play DE. His quickness, strength, and active hands are why he's projected to 3-tech in a 4-3, he's the kind of guy who would be a nightmare for opponents if someone like Indy were to draft him. His strength and hands translate well to 5-tech in a 3-4, but his "length" (arms + height) create a small disadvantage when he's working against someone like Vollmer or Miami's Long. His quickness will help him overcome that to some extent, which is why he's an intriguing possibility for a multi-front defense like NE because you can use him outside in a 3-4, but on passing downs or when the strategic match-up calls for a 4-3 base, he'd be awesome.

. . . and once again, Box sums up how I feel before I can even make my post. :p

Perfectly stated.

i don't dispute you because in all honesty i don't know much about him. however, is he worth taking at 22? Or will he be around in round 2?

I agree, he is not starter material, but he is relentless passing the rusher, with a decent first step and could carve out a nice niche for himslef in that regard.

Most projections see him somewhere in the second round, I don't know of one reliable one that has him in the first.

Maybe it's time for a new draft book...

6th best DT here and since Brian Price doesn't fit the Pats he is 5th best

Both sites have him as an early to mid 2nd round pick and not a mid to late 1st round pick.
