Your choice that if our #1 draft pick is a defensive player, which style of defensive player would you want this new guy to be close to resembling or comparing him as a clone of....

Willie McGinest or Richard Seymour?

DO NOT SAY BOTH...Only one clone please :)

Richard Seymour. Harder to find an elite 3-4 DE than it is to find an elite OLB.

McGinest, in a heartbeat. We can rotate in run-stoppers and pass-rushers at DT/DE, but aside from TBC we don't really have a DE/OLB pass-rushing threat. And we need one. Desperately.

McGinnest easy
while yes an elite 3-4 end is harder to find our bigger need is OLB and if we can get an elite OLB with our 1st pick all is good

Seymours talent, Mcginest's attitude.

If we had a pass rusher like Colvin/Vrabel at OLB I would say Seymour, but we need the pass rush sooner then later so I will say McGinest.

Good thread. However, we need a Seymour in order to make a McGinest as effective as he can be, so I'll go with the next Richard Seymour.

GREAT question buddy, hope the recovery is going well. I'm a little biased so it's tough. Obviously I'll say Willie. But, I'm gonna back it up too. In our 3-4 I honestly think that the strongside outside backer position is at least the second most important position on the field (only behind nose at the least). In the front 3 we have one all-pro caliber player and a probowl caliber player. We also have a great backup/serviceable starter. What do we have at olb? An okay weakside guy. Yeah, we need a Willie badly.

Think about this: 2006 was the first year of the true decline on defense. 2005 was Willie's last year here. I know most here always knew Willie was a great player, but I always said I didn't think everyone (mostly media) knew just how great he was. SO many of his great plays didn't affect the stat sheet, but had a HUGE impact on that play and on the game. I can remember a play from the parcells vs Belichick bowl I. Ty Law intercepted quincy carter basically assuring victory. Everyone after the game was boasting up Law praising him for the big play of the game. What people failed to mention was the fact that Willie made it all happen getting quick pressure on carter, forcing an errant throw and the int.

And then of course we can get to off field stuff. Rodney does something wrong his first season (it was show up late or something of the sort), Willie goes right over to him and says "we don't do that here." Man I miss Willie (still wearing my McGinest jersey for every single Pats game)

Seymour I guess, both these players were top 6 picks (Willie #4 and Seymour #6), unless their is a major trade up we should lower our expectations.

I think we did pretty good with Wilfork at 21 as well :)

Luckily he was not a part of this question after his extension :)

Great post. Now that we do not have any great [or even very good] linebackers, a lot of people get re-visionist and say that Belichick starts with the D-line in building his defenses. Not true. Anyone who's followed this team knows that the linebackers have been the most important cog in the Patriots' defenses since Parcells then Belichick arrived. And McGinest was the best of the best. I agree with the poster who used the word "desperately" in describing the need for another McGinest type LB. I think that's why BB signed Adalius to a huge [by our standards] FA contract, then gave away two valuable picks last year in a desperate stopgap measure in Burgess. It's why I also feel that this is the year that BB may finally break protocol and draft an OLB or DE hybrid with his first pick.

Brady.....

I think we need a McGinest more. It just seems he's been harder to replace. I think it's easier to find a DE to be stout vs the run and eat up blockers than an OLB that can do what Willie did for us. His play, intangibles, leadership, work ethic, and locker room presence are greatly missed and sorely needed.

Does anyone have McGinest's numbers from his combine? I tried everything I could think of to find them and came up with nothing. I see a lot of McGinest in Dunlap, however I think I am the only one on the board who thinks this way. Anyway I would like to compare their combine numbers if anyone is up to the challenge.

No, there are a number of people who feel the way you do about Dunlap, the issue isn't his ability. He's one of three players whom I see with similar skills sets to Big Willie, unfortunately Dunlap has the most questions of the three. Many draftniks who has scouting contacts report him sliding on team boards, I just don't think he can slide far enough to attract BB's gambler streak.

Tough question and a lot of good points here already. The only thing I'd add is that while OLB is certainly a bigger need and having an elite one helps out the other 10 players on D a little more than a DE, I'd go with Seymour. Seymour was a dominant, unique, once in a generation player. He is clearly the best 3-4 DE of his generation and is the standard by which all 5-techniques are now judged. If he had not dealt with so many injuries from 05-07, we are likely talking about a hall of fame level player.

With that in mind, if you gave me the choice to re-draft Seymour or re-draft McGinest, I'd go Seymour. But since I highly doubt any player (maybe in the highly unlikely event of the Pats acquiring Suh) could replicate the production of Seymour, I'll go with the more pivotal and currently more needed position on the Pats roster, and take the McGinest level OLB.

Care to share? :) I'm pretty sure I know 2 of the 3, but not positive of the 3rd...

On rarity, it seems to me that both McGinest and Seymour fit the "planet" theory. (DeMarcus Ware and Mario Williams are plenty rare physical specimens, no?)

So to make my choice, I'll look at the team's history. BB has had much better success finding 3-4 DEs in the draft than OLBs, and DE/OLB is a position that has had a tremendous bust rate in the draft overall. So if you could give me a sure-thing McGinest, I'd take him.

McGinest was pretty much mediocre until Belichick arrived. I choose Semour because I don't want my first rounder to take 4+ years to fully develop.
