Yep - that talent might be needed too - hopefully every one of the Sox starters remains great but that seldom happens... but this is still a solid move for the Sox.

Having a solid pitching staff is as smart a way as any to keep the team a contender as anything. Hitting can usually be bought. Pitching, less so.

Great news, but after 2014 the Sox are going to have a blackhole. I really think they should have went beyond the four years and added atleast one more. Lester will be a free agent after 2014 (better lock him up). After 2015, both Beckett and Lackey will be free agents. Casey Kelly anyone? :D

We can worry about that in 2013. Giving Beckett/Lackey extra years is taking on a ton of risk without a whole lot of gain.

Personally, I think Lester gets a new deal a year or two before he hits FA.

Really like this move, some compare it to the way the Braves stayed on top..

Need some pop though.. maybe Lars Anderson will be ready sooner rather than later.. but think that the Adrian Gonsalves trade is a done deal as there maybe a wink and a nod between Hoyer and Theo, and are waiting for the correct timing...

its a good move i guess but beckett isn't the pitcher he once was[2007]. he gives up a ton of hrs and doesn't dominate like he used to[era above 4 last year]. that and hes always got some kind of injury issue usually late in the year when they need him the most. hes a above average pitcher but not a ace in my opinion.

Lackey has medical protection in his contract. If his elbow bothers him or if he undergoes Tommy John surgery, the Red Sox get a sixth year out of him at league minimum ($400,000). Would've been nice if they did the same with Beckett's contract. I'm going to agree with you on the whole risk part (it only takes one pitch to blow out an arm).. but some added protection in the contract wouldn't hurt.

I really don't have a lot of faith in Anderson. He couldn't prove himself against AA pitching and struggles a whole lot against offspeed stuff. He also went a whopping 0-18 in spring training. His groundball rate (53% I believe) is also too high to ever hit 30+ homeruns. Casey Kotchman was predicted to hit 30 homeruns at ease by Baseball America, his high groundball rate put an end to those extreme projections. At this point I'd be more excited in Anthony Rizzo. If Lars or Rizzo don't work out, we could always sign Adrian in 2012 and not give anything up for him.

are there any plans to put bard in the rotation ever

Looks like we might have overpaid for Beckett...

I think Beckett will be fine.

Problem with him is that he never says what's going on injury wise.

But I have faith he'll be fine.

Problem with Beckett is that he's always been incredibly inconsistent. One year he'll look like the best pitcher in the game and the next year, he'll look like one of the worst. In his short amount of time this year, he's appeared to be the latter. For $68M over 4 years, I sincerely hope he improves.

Based on his cyclical tendencies you mentioned he should be coming into one of his "better" cycles. At least I hope so.
