Total headcase but for about $5 M per year you could have one of the best defensive players in football on your team for three years.

If used right he could be a Ngata type player, 3-4 end, 4-3 DT.

Is getting supplemental draft picks really worth flushing 21 million dollars down the toilet? I think Shanahan obviously is in charge of the football side of operations, but Snyder could hardly be happy with losing that MUCH money after only 1 season of Haynesworth.

I think Shanahan has to live with Haynesworth for the financial considerations. And he's still a tremendous football talent even if he hasn't quite 'bought in yet' to what Shanahan is selling.

Agreed $21,000,000 is not worth a draft pick or two. They probably should have declined the option and released him if they don't want him on their team. So if they do trade him they would have paid him $32 million for one year of service only to have the team wind up with a 4-12 record

Shanahan is smart enough to know that if the Redskins and in particular,Haynesworth has double digit sacks and an all-pro year in 2010, he could get some pretty good deals next season from other teams desperat for defensive line help...right now Haynesworth is an early bust in Washington and an injured one at that.

That's a very expen$ive gamble, likely one that isn't going to pay off. I know Snyder likes to throw away his money but it looks like they just blew a chance to get out of a very stupid contract right before it got very stupid.

Perhaps. If we could get Dan to bite on AD and maybe our#44. It actually makes sense. AD would be the only 3-4 LB with experience.

He's also got a huge bonus coming up in 2013, which will force either an outright cut or a renogotiation.

A 3 year rental isn't bad, but I don't think Snyder could swallow losing that much money on his 'new toy' and not at least getting to see him play another year before passing judgment that he just won't fit in with the team.

He was likely being talked about PRIOR to that bonus being paid, if he has been. Not paying a "guaranteed" option bonus simply results in that money becoming guaranteed in the form of salary...as was the case in Seymour's contract language...which means any team who traded for him would be responsible for almost $25M this season as well as $9M more if they kept him for 2011 and 2012 or an average cost of $11M+ over the next 3 years. Remember, because Philly had no interest in him the financials never got discussed.

Even Snyder wouldn't pay $21M for Haynesworth to play for someone else and have to live with the egg on his face for having paid him $32M for one disappointing season.

So the best guess is if he remains available it's because his option bonus wasn't paid and that means it would be the responsibility of whichever team he plays for this season...
