I think it is in a way a very close comparison

Both QBs just about owned every record that thier original team had before they left and both traded within the EAST division and I think back then the Pats knew that Drew was not going to come back and kill them, the Eagles probably are confident that McNabb will not do so either.

I wonder if the Eagles feel that Kolb is the next Tom Brady?

2 key differences:

1. Brady was already proven as our man(to our team and fans at least) when we traded Drew.
2. BB knew from previous years that he could stop Drew.

Eagles are taking a much bigger risk here that could bite them in the arse IMO. I'll give them much credit if they can still sweep the Skins and finish above them.

The intra-division move surprised me. I think it's a little bit of Laurie's Class in that he wouldn't send McNabb to Oakland, which really wanted him but where he would have ended his career in NFL hell, but instead sent him to Washington, where Donovan wanted to go. And, I think it's a little bit what you say; the Eagles have clearly concluded that McNabb has already played his best football and that it is unlikely that he will do serious damage to the Eagles in the Division.

As for Kolb, he's 26yo and going into his fourth season. I suspect they are giving him two seasons to show whether or not he is "the man" for the next ten years. Brady was starting his third season at that age, with one ring on his hand and two others to come at 26 and 27.

I still think Washington got the better of the deal because they already have a better defense in place than Philly and were just short on QB and WR talent which they now have at least one of those done.

I think Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL,definately top 10 but he is really throwing the dice on this trade and hoping Kolb isn't a bust as a full timer,it could be his coaching gig in philly and his ass at stake....and thats a big one at that.

Look for T.O. conversations to start soon,I think we could see a reunion of the two in Washington, makes sense,Shanahan has said before he loves T.O. and I think Donovan would give it another go around.

There is a chance of this happening. A snowball's chance in Hell, but still a chance nonetheless. I still think we should be looking at T.O.

No, unlike bledsoe, mcnabb is actually a good QB

Good points all (except for the TO point...Shanahan might "love" him but he won't gamble the stability of his locker room on him, IMO).

The more I think about this, the more I think that Shanahan (58yo = same age as BB when season opens) decided this was a team that was a couple of pieces away from a Super Bowl run, that he didn't have the right QB to get there and that he wasn't going to watch a Jason Campbell soap opera unfold over the next two or three seasons as he and his team got older.

Campbell has a lot of support in DC, so moving him before the season started was smart. Plus, it opens up at least one more big trade (Al Davis will probably now want Jason since he missed out on McNabb). Shanahan didn't spend much in the FA period, so he has some room to maneuver and make a couple more big moves.

This looks like a "Win Now" move by a Coach who knows how to win. He didn't return to the NFL to play games; he wants to join BB as the only HC with three rings in the present era of the league.

If I remember correctly, didn't the Pats try to trade Drew to Cincy for their #10 overall, but Drew told Kraft he didn't want to go there, and Kraft granted him his wishes?

I just read that Philly tried to trade McNabb to Buffalo, but the deal didn't fall through b/c McNabb refused to sign an extension with the Bills. They also tried to trade him to Oakland, but that didn't work out.

Honestly - I don't think getting FAs/trades within your division is a bad idea. When TO came to Dallas, honestly, I welcomed the idea somewhat, b/c TO knew his former Eagle teammates in and out(and would help the Dallas teammates on preparing for Philly), and would give him extra motivation when we would play them. Of course, it didn't work out.
