Bob Kraft hosted 800 loyal season ticket holders for a pre-draft event last night in the Fidelity clubhouse. The event was very well orchestrated and started with some food as we waited for everyone to show up (Dogs and Wings). Than at 6 we got started with a speech from Robert and Jonathon Kraft. Followed by a speech by Floyd Reese.

Then they brought out their "draft experts" they had a panel that included Michael Smith, Todd McShay, Michael Reiss, Andy Hart, and the great Teddy Bruschi (who was the only one including the Krafts to receive a standing O upon introduction). While I don't think there was any amazing draft insight it was really cool to basically see a live draft show.

Highlights:

Krafts:

They thanked us for being here and for being fans. Spoke of their time in the stands in 210 with their fam and talked about owning the team for a successful 17 years. Bob talked about how prior to his owning they had one home playoff game and that after buying it they have hosted a bunch and lost one this past season and was real boastful of the home playoff winning streak and insisted on starting over again on the streak.

He told a story about one of his first drafts and how Parcells had invited him in to his office to meet a player they were considering with their first pick number 4 overall. Parcells introduced this huge mountain of a man and had said they were interested in this type of player and Kraft went on to ask him how important academics was to his life and the guy responded that "he was going to graduate on time no matter how long it took":ugh: Kraft said they wound up drafting Willie instead that season (thank god).

Kraft also told a quick story about a young pup covering the NFL for the first time down in Bryant back in the late 90s and he was referring to Michael Smith.

Floyd Reese:

Spoke in detail about the whole scouting process which starts just after the draft by beginning to scout the upcoming seniors and how it moves thru to the season and to the bowls, and senior bowls, then onto the combine and then visits, followed by in house meetings, with pro days sprinkled in their which are starting to wind down now.

Talked about how their board is pretty much set by now and that they only have minor tweaks to make based on any info that may still come out. He went onto to say that if it wasn’t for trades that anybody in the room could make just about any pick as it would be based on the board and all the work already done.

And he also confirmed something that we have heard pundits say about the combine. Which is that while there is some room for opening eyes with good times that it is really more about not screwing it up. That as a player this being such an important moment for them that screwing it up looks really bad on you and went onto say that forgetting your cleats for the biggest physical of your life is just inexcusable and says much more about the player than running a fast time. Basically he said that these guys should run their fastest times as it is pretty much the only time in their lives that they are training specifically for these drills so they should put up their best time.

And the last thing from Floyd that was interesting was that he was there for that event and had to leave directly following the event to get home to take his wife out for their 39th wedding anniversary. Talk about love for the game the man gave up an hour plus of his wedding anniversary to come talk football with 800 fans.

Thanks Floyd.

The Draft Round Table Discussion:

This started with Teddy telling us how his draft day went. He knew he wasn't a first rounder but had hopes of going pretty high and that the day was slowly going by as they were sitting around waiting for the call and then he was walking by the TV and happened to see his name on the ticker and yelled out to everyone that he thought he just got picked and people asked him why he thought that and he said I just saw my name next to the patriots and I think they drafted me. Then the phone rang and it was Parcells. Teddy said he was real excited to talk to Parcells and that he wanted to thank him and tell him how much it meant to him but that he never got the chance. He picked up the phone it was Parcells on the other side and Bill said Teddy we are glad to have you and we plan on playing you at LB and STs and here is your position coach AL Groh and Teddy Joked that before he could even say anything to BP he was on the line with Groh wondering who Groh was.

They then spent a couple of hours talking about the draft. How the deep it is and how the patriots have 4 of the top 53 and that they are really set up to have one of their best drafts ever. McShay explained that an average draft will give you 2 or 3 contributing players and that the Patriots could hit that number before the 2nd rd is over and still have 8 more picks.

They spent some time talking about how good the Patriots have been at finding sleepers noting we have the best one ever in Brady but that it doesn't stop there as we also found Tully, Guyton, Gay, Edelman, Wright, and others very late if not undrafted. Also noting that with a bunch of 7s this year they have chance to grab the guys they think might be next in line and won’t have to compete for them as UDFAs.

One of the best moments of the Draft discussion came as they were discussing Kindle. They had some highlights on a big screen and While Reiss was talking about Sergio they showed a vicious sack that he had made and Teddy went nuts and got the crowd going too. Really left you wanting Kindle. (he may have leaped to the top of my wish list though he was pretty much there already).

I am sure I left a few things out but I will end it with the last question of the night (they had some audience members asking questions). Upon the last one Teddy joked your last so you better make it good. The guy went on to ask about Thomas and what the panel thought he might bring via a trade and Teddy just blurted out you did save a good one for last and was laughing devilishly and got a rise out of the crowd. He then Directed the question to Reiss (Michael Smith was MCing the night and had directed the questions all night so Teddy doing it was funny as he did it because of his opinion on Thomas) Reiss stated that Thomas likely had no value in a trade as if there was any it likely would have been done by then and said that his salary was likely the reason and that the only trade he could see making sense was Branch for Thomas but that he didn't think Carroll had any interest in Thomas. Then Bruschi chimed in with his opinion which was pretty simple he asked "why is he still on the team."

All in all it was a very fun event and Thank You to Mr. Kraft for hosting it.

Re: Patriot Season Ticket Holder Event

It was a real fun event wasn't it. Thanks for taking me pops.

PS: I didn't mean to post the above breakdown under your user ID.

No problemo, son.

The event was first class all the way!!

Very informative, open, honest and fun.

That sounds like a great time. I would love to see the Pats draft board after the draft just to get an idea of what they think about different players. Even if they didn't draft someone, it might be interesting to see what players get drafted in the first round that they had pegged as more of a 3rd round talent and vice versa, and certain players that they take completely off their board. I think it would be fascinating.

was real boa(Please be quiet - edited)l of the home playoff winning streak
 Love the automatic editor. Took me a second to realize why it edited here.

Ugh, drafting Kindle would be such a big mistake. Hopefully the fact they were talking about him openly means they're not planning to take him.

Why? We need the next Willie McGinest in the worst possible way and I see Kindle as that guy on the outside. However, you're probably right--if they were really high on him they probably wouldn't have shown the clip, etc. Who knows.......

Awesome description of what sounds like a great event. Thanks for the post, fgssand or signbabybrady or whover the heck posted it!

Great post. for what it's worth, i was looking up Kindle at a site called SB nation and they had the Pats picking Odrick and Kindle going 2 spots later, with the explanation that their were lots of 3-4 pass rushers available. Their take, not mine I depend on others for college info.

Reminded me that Floyd Reese was going rumored to be leaving and didn't. That's great. Always thought the titans filled in well as they let some talent go due to salary. Hope he had a nice Anniversary, if late. Sure he's going to hear about it (remember the radio call in?)

Boy AD must have been a real a hole, you never hear anything even neutral about him. Let's hope for some real progress at LB, the past is past.

Would like to see a whole book on how the Pats do business prior to and the day of the draft.. would love to know how they make decisions, who has imput and how many phone calls are being made....

But this sounds like a very cool event..

Here's what I posted in the other thread..

Between 6-8pm Saturday in the Fidelity Suite at Gillette stadium, a panel of 4 individuals fielded questions about draft scenarios and possible Pat targets..

Mike Smith - ESPN BOSTON was the MC
Opening

Bob Kraft - great opening speech how the draft has grown in popularity. Remembers the day of it being held on Tuesday.. Brought up a story in his 1st year as owner of the team. Parcells introduced this potential draft pick to Kraft and said “this is the guy we want, he loves football”.. Kraft shook his hand, which he noticed it disappeared in this mans enormous mit. Kraft ask “is school important to you?” the candidate replied.. “yes sir, I will graduate on time, no matter how many years it takes me”. The crowd started laughing and Kraft shouted out, “this was the day I met McGinnest”

Johnathan Kraft – Talked how glad they were everyone turned out and hope they will be many more of these parties.

Floyd Reese – He talked for about 20 minutes about all different topics

- 35 years of being part of a draft
- It was his 36 wedding anniversary, he ran out after because his wife said if they didn’t get out to dinner, there would be no 37
- Said this is the deepest draft he’s seen in years
- Made reference to the Pats wanting players who think about football all the time and said “not players who don’t have their cleats during prodays”
- Believed the collective bargaining agreement would be resolved because there is to much a stake..

** Great 20 minute run down of everything.. Very articulate and no BS..

(I’ll update this part later)
McShay
Reiss –
Andy Hart
Bruschi – When he came out, the crowd went crazy
- Bruschi said its about time to move on from Maroney.
- Responded to a question about AD Thomas.. “I have no idea why he is still here.. He’s saying anti-patriot things
- Most important draft in the past couple of years
- Mentioned how he played OLB for four days before the coach moved him in.. Two Small. Made reference to SETTING THE EDGE and small guys can’t extend their arms out to stop the run and block the lane
- BTW I was 5 feet away from him.. HE smiled the entire time and HELD NOTHING BACK.. When a video came up of Kindle knocking out a qb, Bruschi said something I can’t repeat.. but everyone was laughing
- Like Kindle the most or a TE with the 1st pick
- ** MORE TO COME *** Sorry wife wants more mcsully time :p

** they field questions with the audience through the entire thing.. when I have more time, I’ll present it

______________________________

I am still on a high from it. We just watched a move, wife and I and I can barely remember what it was about.

The cool part of the night was seeing everyone joke around with one another. Mcshay is a good guy even though he catches flake from some people.

Bruschi did say that and wants the kid from ASU.

The crowds breath was taken away multiple times on how frank Teddy was. In his opinion, maroney has been given the chance and even though he is a good guy it's time for néw blood.

Brusci stole the show but reiss and hart were very good. Hart was a little more reserved but I noticed bruschi poked him a few times during some lite humor.

I forgot to mention, they showed a short video clip of Archie Manning talking about Te ow and Bruschi was booing him with the crowd. It was quite funny

Going to switch gears here with all the Bruschi talk and talk about Reese.. Just recalling his speech.. Let me tell you this, when he 1st came here, I wasn't overly excited. I had read reports the reason why the Titans were in salary cap hell was because of him.. After last night, I'm going to say no way..

Next to Bruschi, he was the best.. I can't imagine anyone walking away last night and not being impressed with him..

He mentioned

1. The combine isn't as important as it once was (except Medical and meeting the player)
2. 40 time is the fastest that player will ever run in his life time
3. All the cone drills are less important to evaluate top 50-60 prospects with because as soon as their season ends, they are down in Florida learning how to do these for 3 months
4. SOme years there are only 10-15 first rounders and when you have the 16th pick in the draft, you might be drafting a 2nd round player.. So there is no value there
5. Mention how this draft has 40+ 1st rounders grades on players
6. this guy oozed experience and intelligence..

**THere is more I'm forgetting, Heading out to the gym.. Bang my head around and will come up with the rest..

I know there was tv camera's there. So I'm wondering if it will be on tv or just a couple of quick out takes.. Hoping i get a little TV time since we were in the 1st row

** Quick Bruschi thing - he said he rather be a rookie under Parcells than BB.. Parcells would just scream at you, if you had tough skin, you'd survivie.. But BB has "OPTIONAL" practices for Rookies.. He said the only option is Vets get to go home and Rookies have to practice.. Bruschi said its a complicated system on both sides of the ball and everything is thrown at them from day 1.. (he was saying this in a joking manner but he definitely was providing some great inside info)

Like fgssand said, great time and good time..

Only question is where did the 800 number come from? I would have said about maybe 150 -200 people..

Your post was awesome as well - sorry I missed it in the draft section, i forget to check there sometimes. One of the event organizers told us 800 tickets were issued, plus some VIP's.

Thinking about the room and the "raffle tub", I think it was closer to 800 than 200.

I was also told that they plan to do many more events such as this and many other "perks" for season ticket holdsrs moving forward. That seems to be something all teams have mentioned lately.........probably a wise idea to treat your most loyal fans very well.

Really 800?? It was funny at the end with the raffle.. Michael Smith was like, "are we using the right tkts?"

McSully,

Sounds like we were a few rows behind you. as we were in the fourth row.

Nice to read your breakdown of a great event.

On Krafts story above I thought he had said that we drafted Willie that year instead of the guy who claimed acedemics was important but than immediately contradicted it with a stupid statement????

I was in the 1st row right in front of Bruschi.. He smiled and joked all night.. Stole the show..

The story with the player was McGinnest.. Remember Kraft said at the end of the story and the player was "Willie McGinnest".. I might have missed something but I thought the player who made the comment "I'll graduate on time not matter how many years it will take", was McGinnest.. Of course I was smiling ear to ear waiting for the night to unfold..

Funny how the mind works we both heard the same thing and interpreted it differently. I thought at the end he had said the player they ended up taking that year was Willie as instead of this guy but maybe he was just tying the story to the guy we took. I guess we will have to ask him next time we see him :D.
