From Reiss's blog:
Tim Graham, who covers the AFC East for ESPN.com, recruits Football Outsiders managing editor Bill Barnwell to dissect goal-line and short-yardage (1-to-2 yards) data for every AFC East running back.

The results, from this view, are surprising as Patriots running back Laurence Maroney tops the charts.

Graham breaks down the data:

"Maroney scored eight goal-line touchdowns, 1.65 more than the decade average would suggest. That was the division's best differential. Maroney also converted three more first downs than the average in short-yardage situations, third-best in the AFC East."

Maroney's standing on the Patriots has been the topic of much debate. Entering his fifth NFL season in 2010, Maroney has not reached the lofty expectations that followed him to New England as a first-round draft choice. Yet he has shown flashes of excellence at various points.

Most would agree that Maroney's 2009 season was up and down. When the Patriots had a run of injuries at running back, he stepped up and delivered with some of his most consistent running as a pro. Yet on the flip side, he had a string of fumbles that seemed to test the patience of coach Bill Belichick.

These statistics highlight some of the positives that Maroney brings to the Patriots.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Maroney bashers.

I'm a Maroney supporter but I just have to chuckle at him being labeled the best at anything of the AFC East RB's

I'd rather kick out Taylor and Morris so that Mass General has some spare beds in September.

Maroney is going nowhere.

Thank you! Just what I needed to pick up a boring Good Friday at work!

To call those of us who see Maroney for he is (a mediocre, second- or third- tier NFL running back on his BEST day) "Maroney Bashers" suggests we want the kid to perform poorly.

I want the kid to be the next Gale Sayers, fahchrissakes, but he just keeps letting me down.

He's closer to the next Leo Sayer! In fact, as he approaches the line, I wonder if he is actually singing the words to leo's big hit, "You Make Me Feel LIke Dancing"!

Opportunity after opportunity passes him by and he is still the same vanilla runner he has always been.

HE IS NOT AN NFL EVERY-DOWN BACK. Period.

Defend him all you want, but just do me a favor first - WATCH HIM PLAY!

And if you still think he is the "best" anything, then I guess your delusion runs deeper than we all thought!

Maroney isn't going anywhere.

I actually like LM but best goal line back?? He fumbles way too much at the goal line.

Throwing stats aside, I'd take Ronnie Brown as my goal-line back any day of the week. In my opinion, he's the best goal-line back in the division.

Really? How many times has he fumbled at the goal line in his career?

No, it suggests you ignore the evidence and production, and fo rsome reason known only to yourselves, continue to insist that 3.2 ypc Morris gets more yards per carry than 3.9 ypc Maroney, Plus Moroney is being used as the short-yardage back (you can't gain 3 yards on 3rd and 1) and Morris is used on draw plays where the average carry is much higher.

I don't understand it, it defies logic, but there it is.

Keep Morris, keep BJGE, cut Maroney. None so blind as those who will not see.

So it's Maroney's fault that he's not Gale Sayers 2.0, not your fault for having a stupidly unreasonable expectation?

Actually, I don't think we should cut Maroney, I think we should accept him for what he is - a change of pace guy. decent hands...a possible replacement for Kevin Faulk (although no one can 'replace" Kevin...he has been one productive back for us!)

Then, once you finally accept Maroney, you can go out and get yourself a REAL every-down back, something this team has not has since Corey Dillon retired.

Morris, Green-Ellis? Backups, in my opinion.

Come on, accept the link to the joke, will you please?

Gale Sayers? / Leo Sayer?

You Make Feel Like Dancing? / Maroney Dancing Behind the Line WHile Holes Close?

Do I have to explain EVERYTHING to you?!?!?

(Wait. Do you even know who Leo Sayer is?)

What? Are you referring to the kick pass to Logan Mankins in the AFCCG? That play was sweet. Perfectly executed just like McDaniels drew it up.

Just when you thought it was safe to trust stats... this is almost funny (we laugh so we don't have to cry...)

Maroney is not terrible but he is not great either, middle of the road, dime a dozen NFL player. Combine average player with a lot of fumbles plus poor blocking and you get a guy who gets benched.

He will be in NE next year in a rotation, expect 800 yards, 6 TDs.

That is ALL I am saying, and all I have EVER said.

Maroney is not an every-down, trust-your-team-to-the-guy kind of running back.

He is a backup or a 3rd down/change-up guy.

We need the MAIN GUY and he is not currently on the roster!

Just what are you pounding your chest about? First off last time I checked the AFC East only consists of four teams and he was tops in one catergory and 3rd out of 4 in another. Secondly how does goal line TD's average qualify him as a better back than others. Was it because he had more attempts, field position, a QB where other teams had to look out for the pass or is it because he didn't run it in from the 15 or 20 yard line? I'd take any of last years AFC east starters over Maroney as well as some of the backups (Ricky Williams, Leon Washington) for sure. Sabermetric geeks have done a good job of ruining baseball let's keep them out of football where they have almost no relevance.

I want Armchair moved from Practice Squad to First String IMMEDIATELY!

you what they say if you have to explain a joke...?

you can't score a fraction of a td, so he was essentially tied with ricky williams for the #2 spot on the list at +25% production over expectations.

fred taylor was actually best at ~+100% production over expectations ---- 4x better than either maroney or williams.
