Anybody up for an order of Al Woods?

As I'm going through my final grades on players, I notice that I have Al Woods ranked more-or-less evenly with Odrick. Would anybody be really upset if we went another direction at #22 (Hughes, Graham, Charlie Brown, Spiller, whomever), and picked up Woods at the end of the 2nd?

I think a new day is dawning in my thinking about the draft.

It all depends on who we could otherwise get at 22. Woods may have similar combine stats to Odrick but it comes down to how productive they are on the field.

To be honest, I saw each play two games. I remember Woods making plays, not Odrick. Odrick made his money at Senior Bowl week.

That being said, I didn't watch enough/pay close enough attention to either one to say one's better than the other.

Yes!

During the season I'd noticed his play and thought he looked like an excellent run-stuffer, but for some reason I thought he wasn't draft eligible so I didn't pay a lot of attention to him. Originally, I thought he was more of a nose tackle than an end prospect, but he's longer than I realized. Watching on TV is a sucky way to scout, sadly.

He's not skilled in pursuit, and doesn't have very good pass-rushing skills, but his ability to anchor down and simply stop the run is very impressive. I think he would be an ideal end for us, with Wright subbing in on passing downs. Our defense would be much stouter with Woods shutting down the run.

Warren-Wilfork-Woods sounds pretty good; it's especially pleasing from an aesthetic standpoint, too. We could have a W line, with M linebackers (McKenzie replacing Guyton inside), and B corners. Hah!

I like Woods mostly because I like physical freaks. I don't think he is a 2nd or even 3rd rounder. Both Linval Joseph and Torell Joseph are rated higher. I'd rather have Odrick at 22 than Woods at 53 for sure. I like the way Odrick uses his hands and he beats double teams often. He can domanate one-on-one against almost anyone. Odrick is not a physical freak like Woods or Suh.

It's funny, I was just re-focusing on Woods myself today. Out of the 2nd-tier DE group -- let's call it Carrington, Wootton, Woods -- he strikes me as the steady, ready choice. And you have to LOVE those 36" arms.

Another I'm pondering over is Linval Joseph. He's an impressive immovable object with the look of an NT, yet he also has good length and a bit of burst. Anybody project him to DE for the Pats?

Arkansas ran at him when they wanted to move the ball in their bowl game, Jay Ross was the immovable object holding the point against double-teams. Joseph had trouble getting penetration without being part of a line stunt - I think the kid would have been better off with another year. He's an option Day Three.

Woods was probably playing DT almost exclusively. Odrick was used mostly at End, correct?

I was originally looking at Woods at NT, but he appeared slim at his Pro Day at 309, and when I transfered him to my DE list, he got lost in the shuffle.

Start Meriweather, McGowan, Banta-Cain, Burgess, subbing Wright, Wilhite & Wheatley -- it's a pure BMW defense. (Hmm...Koa Misi's sounding better and better, eh?)

Discussing this in another thread...I really, really want to include Alualu, I love him as a player, I just worry that he's too darned small for what the Pats ask their DEs to do.

And 11" hands, he may have the biggest upper limbs of any player in the draft. I'm not sure where these guys will go, and I wouldn't take any before the 4th round (with our current group of picks) but Woods, Joseph, Alualu and Arthur Jones are all kind of interesting.

We already have a triple W line - Warren - Wilfork - Wright. So that wouldn't change anything. However if you add Odrick to the line, you could get WOW.

Woods is one to consider as a developmental prospect, as he seems to have all the tools to work with. His senior season was his only one as a full time starter, so he's still progressing. Highly impressive at the Combine with his size, athleticism, and interviews. Check out these numbers:

Word is, he's now rising from a 6th-7th projection to as early as round 3.

FWIW, Clifton Geathers has ridiculous 37 3/4" arms (with 11 1/8" hands). That gives him a full inch reach beyond Ryan Clady, who has the longest arms of any OT in the NFL.

No thanks. There's a good reason he was a 6th-7th rd. projection. Because he didn't do sh!t for 4 years at LSU. Now all of a sudden he pulls off a good vertical at the combine and he's a 2-3? I ain't buyin' it. He's still a 7th rounder to me. He'll make you pine for the salad days of Marquise Hill.
