Thoughts on Jon Assamoah

He's definitely been on the radar. But the Pats need for a guard greatly diminished with the resigning of Neal. We'll probably use a mid round pick to develop another OL, but Asamoah will be long gone by then. He's too good to last that long.

Very true, on all accounts.

Center looks like the bigger need now, with Koppen not playing at as high a level anymore.

Ok, so I've been trying to research this and haven't found any info to back it up, but I SWEAR I remember reading an interview after last year's draft with an offensive line coach who worked with Mankins and Vollmer both when they were younger who said he was the only person who wasn't surprised about the Pats taking Vollmer so early. At the end of the interview he was talking about other pupils of his and he mentioned Asamoah saying watch out for him next year or something like that.

Can anyone validate this?

Yes, his O-line coach was the O-line coach for Kaczur and Vollmer.

Hey Box,

What are your thoughts about our OG/C position? I think its hard for us to tell if the Pats view this as a need or not. Koppen was awful last yr but both our guards are solid even though Neal is getting old. We also drafted Bussey and Ohrenberger last year so we are already developing a few guys. I really don't think this is a huge need and the only guy I would really love to get is Maurkice Pouncey who would come in and start day 1 in my opinion at center. The only other OGs I like are: Saffold, Asamoah, and Beadles. The first two guys look like 2nd rd picks and Beadles is a mid rder. It doesn't seem to me like there is a lot of value in taking a guy 2nd rd who isn't going to start or be in a comp to start day 1.

How do you think the Pats view Koppen? Do you think we need to upgrade at C?

My best guess? NE views Koppen as a starter. Connolly as a starter. Wendell, Ohrnberger, and Bussey as depth/competition. Coach Scarnecchia has been checking out interior and multi-position OL, but we're looking at half the number we had on the list last year, and those are later round prospects...it would appear they consider the OL adequate.
