Draft: Jimmy Graham 4th?

This guy is really raw but is an intriguing prospect in the 4th round at the highest. I would have said 5th, but we don't have one of those. Has size at 6'7" 260 and ran a 4.65 40. Was a basketball player at Miami before playing football last year.

I vaguely remember BB making a correlation between hoop players and TEs at one point. Am I right there?

Anyway, I'd love to see what this guy could do in a Pat's uniform.

Mike and I are on the same page on this one.. He should be drafted in the 4th round but his measureables will put him in the late 2nd or 3rd round

I wouldn't be surprised if Graham turns out to be a very good TE indeed...eventually. If I had a young team with low short-term expectations, I'd be very tempted in the 3rd. But for the Patriots, that seems mighty high for a guy who hasn't learned to block or run routes yet.

His stock is really shooting up after initially being tagged as a 3rd rounder. If we want him there is no doubt we would have to use a 2nd to get him. I just don't see him making it out of the second round. Someone will "over draft" him, and honestly I wouldn't mind in the least if that team was us.

Why would you want a TE who doesn't block well when we use TEs overwhelmingly for blocking?

The guy has only played football for 1 season. He can be what ever we want him to be at this point, with proper coaching. He certainly is not incapable of blocking, and the only reason we don't use our TE's more in the passing game is not because of choice, but maybe because we have not had a reliable threat at the position in years.

Watson was always reliable. He should have been more than that, but at the very least he was reliable. Dave Thomas had superb hands and very good separation, but was rarely thrown at and kept in to block when he saw the field.

Watson was thrown at just 40 times last year. That is scandalous for a team that spreads it around as much as we do.

And why on Earth would you want a 6'6" 260lbs TE, running in the low 4.5's, to stay in and block? I'm not against drafting him, but if we do our use of the Tight Ends MUST change.

I don't think the FO agrees with your assessment; otherwise I'm sure Watson would have been retained on a team left with zero at the position. I'm certainly not saying Watson was a failure, but he wasn't a difference maker.

It's just an opinion, but as I said previously Graham is the guy I like. I also agree that the use of our TE's would change in a big way if we did draft him, but just because the guy has size, and speed doesn't mean he can't block or we wouldn't leave him in to block if effective.

Is the guy an athlete playing football or a football player? I wouldn't take the rick on him at this point, I'd much prefer grabbing Jim Dray and Scott Sicko! in lower rounds.

Well obviously I feel he is a football player; otherwise I wouldn't advocate drafting him as high as the 2nd. He's very athletic, and caught 6 TD's on something like 18-20 catches in his 1st year playing the game.

Watson was better than 40 catches a year. That's a stone cold undeniable fact. Whether the FO kept him is by the by, the fact is they didn't use him, and they weren't about to pay him $4M a year whether it was his fault or their fault.

We threw at our TE's just 61 times in total last year. That's ridiculous.

I've no doubts you can teach him to block, but having him blocking half the time would be a major waste of his skills.

He is one of my binkys and I wouldn't mind taking him in the 3rd if we get a pick there. I think he is purely a receiving TE. Just like Greg Olsen. Physically he is better then Olsen was coming out of Miami. Olsen just had years more of experience and better technique.

I also think he could be the best offensive TE to come out of this draft. He would really need to work on his blocking. If we could take him and Gronkowski I think they would be the perfect compliment for years to come.

I think in 5 years when you look back at this Draft, the best value would be attributed to Andrew Quarless. A massive jackass with unbelievable potential.

I absolutely love the TE class this year, more than I have done in some years. There's so much value to be had, and so many very good players available late.

I don't see your Graham/Gronkowski dream being achievable, which is a shame, but I could certainly see a Pitta/Dray, Moeaki/Quarless, McCoy/Peek combo coming off.
