Considering that Connor Barwin had such a cult following in 2009, I'm surprised there hasn't hardly been a peep for Konz. This guy is the versatile conversion project who could play just about any position for us, including tight end. Also when you think about how successfully his teammate, Julian Edelman, converted to WR, you would think that a Kent State athlete would not be overlooked by the Pats scouting department.

Konz also put up some monster numbers that are a clear indication of explosive athleticism. He could contribute right away on special teams, and has the potential to convert to or play a number of positions - FB/H-back/TE.

I'd think he'd also be an instant fan hit due to his name - KONZZZ!!!;
and his golden locks which would probably make the female pats fans very happy. ;)

Konz in round 6? What say you? He's got at least as much upside as Slater, whom the Pats selected in round 5, if not MORE.

He was a LB before he switched to offense, so he could also play S, too. :)

And, yeah, I'm all for getting him with a 6. :D

Anyone find any highlights online? I'd like to see if his workout numbers show up on the field. Anytime I see a guy with these kind of numbers but who lack a true position I am reminded of Mike Mamula and Matt Jones.

Interesting find. The thing about this guy is he has very little production and he'll be 24 before the season starts. The thing about Slater was that he was a real good special team player in college and 2008 was a so-so draft. Still, you could argue the Pats reached for him.

I don't know what Konz has done in special teams at Kent St. Bunting did a little story on him, but didn't mention anything about special teams.

Given his age, lack of position, and lack of production though, I wouldn't reach for him with anything more than one of our many 7s.

I'm thinking a section filled with fans wearing black leather jackets and sideburns that give two thumbs up and an Ayyyyyy! every time he makes a play.

Sit on it, Sanchez.

If you read this interview that our friend at Patriots Daily posted, you'll see that he played on every single special teams unit, and did pretty well.
Q&A With Kent State TE Jameson Konz | Patriots Daily

Also, in his first full year on offense in 2009, with a highly inconsistent freshman quarterback, he managed 21 receptions for 298 yards; that's 14.2 YPC, with a long of 56 and 2 total touchdowns. Not bad, really.

To be honest, I'd like to see this guy in a Taylor Mays role at deep centerfield S after he spends a year or two on special teams. C'mon, Bill, let's make it happen. :D

Vollmer was 25 before the 2009 season began.

He's the 3rd WR that we've been waiting for!

OK, I'll bite! I'm a sucker for the amazing athletes as much as anybody, but I do demand evidence of a football player attached.

- In his one season on defense, Barwin led the Big East in tackles, recorded 12 sacks, and was named team MVP.

- In his one season on offense, Konz was his team's 4th leading receiver with 21 catches for 298 yards.

I don't really see the likeness. :)

Yes Ma'am. When high level production and motor combines with elite athleticism the result is a highly appealing prospect. When high level athleticism combines with moderate production, it gives me pause.

I don't think he is a fit on offense or defense. I think that he is a very solid special teams player. Maybe a touch light for wedgebuster, but I like him for kick and punt coverages, as well as punt return Mike.

Agreed. I'd gladly spend one of our plethora of 7th-round picks on him with an eye toward special teams -- and if he can find a spot to make himself useful on offense or defense, so much the better.

Worse case scenario, if he didn't make it he could be hyped for the next "smack down" event as the Koonz Man! Pro wrestling has a future star. Looks the part.

Thank god someone said what I wanted to.

7th round picks - 2009

Last year we selected Darryl Richard, DT (3-4 DE), Georgia Tech with the 234th pick overall. Why? Because he was 6'4, 290lb and had scored 37 points on the Wonderlic. To quote from NFL Draft Scout:

Post-Draft Outlook: A closer look at the Patriots' picks: 7/234 -- Darryl Richard, DT, 6-4, 290, Georgia Tech...Richard was a two-gap, run-stuffing end at Georgia Tech, so there should be no surprise the Patriots sought him out in the seventh. He flew under the radar with the Yellowjackets and could do the same in training camp this summer. Some draft experts rate him as a potential steal, particularly because his college teammates have gotten most of the press. Richard could be the next Mike Wright and build a strong career as a backup. Unfortunately for him, he's playing at a position where the Patriots have depth, but he'll be interesting to watch in camp. - by The Sports Xchange

Mile High Report (the Broncos version of Pats Pulpit) liked him too.

Is Konz really a better prospect than Darryl Richard? Or was Darryl Richard just a 7th round steal?

Did Darryl Richard get on the field at all last year? Hard to call a guy who doesn't play a "steal", even in the 7th.

I like Konz as a Heath Evans type of "do-the-little-things-and-can-handle-himself-if-needed-to-play-a-larger-role-occasionally" player.

I certainly wouldn't take him higher than the sixth round.

Did Tommy Brady get on the field his first year? However you are correct in that steals define themselves.

For now Richard has an opportunity, Edelman and Vollmer have made good starts, Bussey, McKenzie, Tate, even Butler all have a chance to define themselves as steals...should be fun to watch.

Wasn't Bussey hurt prior to the Draft?

The thing I like about the 2009 Patriots draft is that all 6 of the later round draftees are still on the team. Those that were cut in the roster cut-downs were sent to the Practice Squad and given payrises to keep them on it (e.g. Daryl Richard).

There was always a reason for drafting that player and none of them failed to produce in college.

4/123 -- Rich Ohrnberger, G, 6-2, 297, Penn State - excellent technique, highly mobile
5/170 -- George Bussey, OT, 6-2, 306, Louisville - played in the same OL as Eric Wood and acquitted himself just as well. Was a 4 year starter. Probably moves inside to guard. Another school of Dante pick.
6/198 -- Jake Ingram, LS, 6-3, 232, Hawaii - top long snapper coming out of college.
6/207 -- Myron Pryor, DT, 6-0, 319, Kentucky - penetrative 4-3 DT coming out of college, proved to be a good nickel rusher
7/232 -- Julian Edelman, WR, 6-0, 198, Kent State - enough said.
7/234 -- Darryl Richard, DT, 6-4, 290, Georgia Tech - prototypical build for a 3-4 DE with decent college production.

I didn't follow the draft much when we took people like Oscar Lua and Bo Ruud. But I believe in looking at college production and taking it from there. Who would you rather have on the team right now - Ron Brace or Myron Pryor? You don't need me to tell you which one produced in college...

Darryl Richard was the only drafted rookie who was released. McKenzie and Bussey both went on IR before the season began, Tate was on PUP. The other eight plus Hoyer all made the 53, though.

Oh one other reason they considered drafting Richard—he earned a degree in management in three years . . . and then stuck around and got his MBA.

I'm with you up until this last piece, which is quite confusing. DT is not a position you evaluate based on "production". And in terms of tackles, sacks, etc. I think Brace actually had more.

I'm not even going to check. It was a stupid throw-away line, I think I wanted to end the post on a high and made an arse of myself instead.

That said, Brace was immeasureably helped by having BJ Raji alongside him. It'll be interesting to see how their respective careers pan out.
