Adam_Schefter:
New England was granted four compensatory picks - one in the sixth round and three in the third.

Got one in the 6th. Clearly that's three in the 7th.

jackpot!!!

Re: Possibly a total of 12 picks for this year

That's pretty much as expected. It was mostly a question of whether it would be one 6th and three 7th's, or four 7th's. Gaffney would be the free agent lost that got them a 6th; Paxton, Evans and Jordan would be the free agency losses that got them the 7th's. The Pats didn't sign anyone that would qualify in the compensatory pick formula to cancel out those losses; the free agents they signed that were cut by other teams like Taylor don't count. The Pats lost Larry Izzo too but four compensatory picks is the maximum a team can receive.

One in the 6th and 3 in the 7th

Not sure if this should have been merged with the other thread but that one would need a new title....

Re: Possibly a total of 12 picks for this year

So I'm speculating that the Pats' draft picks will look something like this once these compensatory picks are officially announced:

1st round #22
2.12, #44 overall (from Jacksonville)
2.15, #47 overall (from Tennessee)
2.21, #53 overall
4.21, #119 overall
6.21, #186 overall
6.38, #203 overall (compensatory for Jabar Gaffney)
7.22, #226 overall
7.24, #228 overall (from Philadelphia)
7.42, #246 overall (compensatory for Heath Evans)
7.43, #247 overall (compensatory for Lonnie Paxton)
7.45, #249 overall (compensatory for LaMont Jordan)

Re: Schefter: Pats granted 4 compensation picks

4 shots at the dart board hopefully we land Ju Ju or TFB type players.

25% chance 1 of those picks will turn out to be at least "descent".

i'm sure we can find something late. Is this the most comp picks we have had in sometime....... I'm familar w/ MLB comp..... but not so much NFL comp...

can a comp pick ever be in the rounds 2-4?

Re: Schefter: Pats granted 4 compensation picks

That's much lamer than I was expecting.

Still, I hear those 6th round Compensation picks can sometimes work out.

Re: Schefter: Pats granted 4 compensation picks

I thought we'd end up with four 7's, so it was nice to see that 6 in there.

Best it can be is a 3rd rounder.

How do you figure? The primary consideration is what the player the team lost signed his new contract for. That would be Jabar Gaffney who signed for what, about $2.5 million? Big money players like Haynesworth get you a 3rd, a 4th rounder would go to players signing for about $5-6 million a year, a 5th would be compensation for a guy signing for around $4 mil, etc. Evans, Paxton, Jordan and Izzo were all about $1 million signings and therefore the minimum (7th round) compensation.

Nice projection.
I think it's likely BB trades down and up to get a 3rd and maybe a 5th

I don't expect trading into 2011 as we already have Oakland's 1st

I don't have any beef with these compensation picks. This team, under BB, has been able to do some pretty good things with those sixth and seventh round picks.

I'm satisfied. I also don't expect a lot of trading to happen for 2011 picks, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some of this year's picks be used as compensation in some sort of deal for an RFA.

Maybe???

Some notable 6th & 7th round picks during the BB era...

Tom Brady
Tully Banta-Cain
Julian Edelman
Matt Cassel
David Givens
Jake Ingram
Patrick Pass

A little bit of a revision:

1.22, #22 overall
2.12, #44 overall (from Jacksonville)
2.15, #47 overall (from Tennessee)
2.21, #53 overall
4.21, #119 overall
6.21, #186 overall
6.36, #205 overall (compensatory for Jabar Gaffney)
7.22, #226 overall
7.24, #228 overall (from Philadelphia)
7.40, #247 overall (compensatory for Heath Evans)
7.41, #248 overall (compensatory for Lonnie Paxton)
7.43, #250 overall (compensatory for LaMont Jordan)

I know this is 20-20 hindsight and crying over spilt milk, but it sure would have been nice if the draft picks from certain trades for players that were cut (Alex Smith, Greg Lewis) were still available - and there was no need to be compensated with the 205th pick of the draft. . .

You can get compensation picks at the end of the third round, but that's the highest. That's what we got when Samuel left.

Here is the link. You were right on the money.

NFL announces 32 compensatory draft choices to 19 clubs

I think we draft a Punter and Konz with our 6th round picks! :)

I mean who can resist those goldilocks and the opportunity to scream KONNNNZZZZZZ from the top of your lungs??

Plus Edelman's also from Kent State and could show him the ropes. ;)

Could the 6th and the two tradeable 7ths get a early 5th for a bad team that needs as many players it can get.

Someone check a draft chart.
