Mankins is not showing up for the Patriots' offseason activities [merged]

Re: If you hadn't already, add OG to your list of draft needs

I'm not particularly concerned about Mankins, for the reasons already mentioned above. However, the Pats' do need to address the OL over the next couple of seasons. They could use an upgrade at C where Koppen sometimes gets overwhelmed by bigger opponents; Neal is nearing the end of his career and the line suffers dramatically when he is out or is playing hurt; and you have to consider how long Light, who will turn 32 this summer, will continue to be effective.

I would think that you would want to draft at minimum one and preferably two of those three's future replacement this year if at all possible. I know most of the talk has been about improving the pass rush and adding a receiver or two, but I think the Pats should consider using one of those 2nd round picks on an offensive lineman.
I agree hopefully we can invest in some interior lineman for the future but right now we seem to be a good situation hopefully it will remain this way.

Re: Mankins is not showing up for the Patriots' offseason activities

What team did he sign with?

He didn't sign with anyone. Hes an RFA who, according to the franchise tender would provide the Pats a 1st and 3rd round pick if another team were to extend Mankins an offer sheet.

I don't think his lack of attendance to the off-season workout program is a big deal, but I am wondering if the Pats are truly committed to retaining him. I just don't see the Pats shelling out big money for a guard- albeit an outstanding one like Mankins.

Re: If you hadn't already, add OG to your list of draft needs

Is someone else posting as you? Sounding alarms already? really?? However, given the way Vince handled things, I kind of agree with you about being disappointed in Mankins' stance. He should take his cue from Vince and honor is rookie deal. Every situation is different in some way and one difference is that Wilfork knew he was pretty much irreplaceable (Brace?) and the Pats would eventually come to terms with him. Mankins is different. He was solid last year but seemed less effective than in the past. Maybe there's already someone on the team or in the draft who can easily replace him in 2011, allowing the Pats to say "sayonara, thanks for your service."

Mankins honored his deal. His deal has expired. He is currently a restricted free agent. Other than injury liability issues, what incentive(s) do you think he has to sign his tender now?

Oops. To answer your question, probably none, other than playing well enough this year that the Pats will offer him a long-term deal. He's one of the best guards in the league and the Pats' tender of a 1 and 3 reflects that. 3 mil + for a guard isn't chump change and I would hope that Mankins would buy into "the Patriot Way" and not act like the Asante Samuel's, Deion Branch's and Brandon Marshall's etc. etc. of the world.

I agree. Mankins doesn't strike me as that type of player to chase the last cent. I don't think Neal making $4m next year has a bearing on Mankins making $3.6m either.

However it cannot be ignored that his agent make the statement that he chose to stay away because he was dissatisfied with the lack of progress negotiations with the team.

You are saying a RFA not under contract is not working out with the team? OH! MY! GOD! This is the biggest news I heard since they announced the world is round or the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This is HUUUUGGGEEEE!

Seriously, this is going to be a long offseason if we have endless threads about who is or isn't attending offseason workouts.

I agree 100%. However it's Mankins' agent that made the correlation b/t/w his attendance and his contract negotiations. That is a legitimate storyline IMO.

If he was in the middle of a deal, it would be a non-story.

Mankin would be about the 100th RFA who has biatched this offseason about his contract situation. Not really much of a story that all these RFAs who would have been UFAs in a capped season would be upset about their contract situation and sit out of non-mandatory activities.

I agree, we just don't like to see our own doing it.

I think he'll be wearing our laundry soon enough. The man is still in good shape and I doubt, with his work ethic, he's lying on the couch chugging beer and eating cheetohs.

Some team would have to be in serious need of O-Line help to release a 1st & 3rd round pick for him, and he knows if he waits to long, he'll be playing a year at half of what he could be getting if he signs the tender.

Here, let me help.....

It's a bad thing on the part of players to not sign their tenders immediately and show up for work before they are obligated to, even though it's "playing by the rules". It's not bad for the owners to screw with player salaries and piss off the playing employees by using the extra RFA years to underpay them, though. "Playing by the rules" like that is a good thing, apparently. ;)

This offseason is going to be a hoot.

Panic can take really subtle forms. ;)

A lot of people [like me] unrealistically wish that our key players were all like Rodney, Bruschi, or Troy Brown. Obviously, those types of guys are extremely rare.

LOL! Personally, I don't blame Mankins for sitting out. If I was not under contract and the best I was going to get is an one year contract for a few million, I wouldn't be in a rush to sign my contract before I have to either. I just don't get the big deal that Mankins is not happy with the situation and won't practice with the team in voluntary workouts. This is not uncommon around the league.

I feel Mankins got a raw deal. He could be the highest paid guard in the league right now or close to it. Now he will get paid a few million and risk getting injured because he drew the short straw and became a free agent in a fluke year where you need at least six years of experience to be an UFA. I wouldn't feel bad for the guy if he was franchised, but being a RFA after already playing for four seasons is a bit of a raw deal.

All that said, still not a big story in my book.

Indeed. Given the way people have lost their minds over the glorified weightlifting, I think this is an appropriate time for this video.

Mankins is a very good player but NO TEAM is going to come close to giving a first and a third for Logan....not even crazy Al

OK, let's just toss out a hypothetical. If you're the Colts and you just canned one of your starting guards, and you were planning to use your very low first round pick on a guard, why wouldn't you seriously think about going after Mankins?
