What about Williams in the first?

Was listening to Kiper and McShay on their podcast and they are doing a mock draft and they think that both D. Williams (gt wr) might be there at 22. Now, I do not get all the love for this guy, but these 2 just could not stop talking about how fantastic this kid was.

I know he is hurt, but is supposed to be fine by traiinging camp. I have more concern with the fact that he played in an offense that does not require the WR to run any sort of real routes. It is all bubble screens and go routes, and GT ran the ball 90 percent of the time, so you would assume Williams would be able to get open as an afterthought.

Thoughts? Would you take him at 22.

I'm assuming you mean Demaryius Thomas, not Williams. Damien Williams is another wide receiver with 1st round potential, but since you mentioned Georgia Tech, I'm guessing it's Thomas.

I think he's awesome. I love the way he plays the game. I want him on the roster. Only problem is, I want him in the mid-second or later, due to the goofy GT offense and the foot injury. He's going to need a year or two to develop, and thus is not a great return on investment in the first round. I will be severely disappointed if the team is unable to acquire a DE, OLB, or TE in the first because they decided to gamble on a gamebreaker of a WR.

Even so, I think he's a Brandon Marshall/Vincent Jackson/Larry Fitzgerald type of talent, and he would be dynamite on this team after a couple years of development. I also want Easley later in the draft.

Mmm . . . imagine if next year we draft a replacement for Moss, and we end up with a WR lineup that goes something like:

Welker
Baldwin
Tate
Thomas
Easley
Edelman

If these kids live up to their potential, that would be the best WR corp we've had outside of the 07 season, and possibly even better. We could break our own points in a single season record!

He was my #1 pick in my recent list of Patriots' picks for rounds 1 & 2. Regarding the offense, remember that 1) he played for Chan Gailey his first two years and had 35 catches in the second of those and 2) he had a sky high wunderlich score so he probably will "get it" though you never know.

I like the timing of getting a top WR this year. 2011 is a great year for WR but if Moss is gone we'd be counting on a rookie. If Belichick likes Thomas I'd love to get him in this year, he can compete with Tate and Edelman for time and if Moss is gone in 2011 then Thomas would have a year in the system. Just like reamer's list above, it gives a decent timeline for having a strong WR group in 2010 with Moss and in 2011 potentially without Moss. Although I wouldn't take Thomas and Baldwin, Thomas, Tate, Welker, Edelman should hopefully be fine.

Well, what else would they need him to do but run bubble screens and go routes next year, really? Heck, I'd say the one thing they need above all else for next year at WR is someone that can scare the sh!t out of the other team running go routes on the opposite side from Moss.

Plus, thanks in part to that GT offense, this kid is a beast of a blocker. I had really been hoping the broken foot would drop him to one of the 2nd rounders, but it sounds like he's still going to go in the first. He needs work for sure, but his ceiling is as high as any WR in this draft, and I'd say his floor is a lot higher than you'd normally expect for the typical project underclassman WR because of the things he can already do well.

If there isn't a player available that they're comfortable is a legit front 7 difference maker at 22 and Thomas is still there, I'd be perfectly content with him as the pick.

What about Dez Bryant?

With 4 high picks the Patriots can take some chances... maybe this is a stretch... maybe not... can't really tell.

Oops, totally meant Thomas. Sorry for the brain fart on that one. I know his wonderlich was mentioned, but for me, that really does not mean a lot. It helps gauge his intelligents, but there have been plenty of guys who have either failed or successeded despite their wonderlich score. My problem is, that coming from such a simplistic offense as far as passing game is concerned, would he be able to learn a more intricate offense quickly and help this team. I know year one he could be fine running bubbles and 9 routes, but I want to know he can fill Moss's spot after year one.

Didn't you see how this thinking played out with Joey Galloway? The Pats want their outside receivers to run a variety of routes, not just simple go routes. If you can't run the plays, you won't see the field or won't be on it very long.

Damion Williams would be a better fit. Excellent hands, good route runner and kick/punt returner. More pro ready. Damarius Thomas didn't show great hands in combine, just fair route runner. We need pro ready.

Huh. Considering that he didn't work out at the combine due to a foot injury, I'm going to call you out on this one.

Williams is nice. I think he's a good #3. Thomas could be a legitimate #1, though, and that's the difference maker for me.
