Patriots, Crumpler getting close

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 18, 2010 6:59 PM ET

Ten days after free agent tight end Alge Crumpler paid a visit to the Patriots, he's reportedly close to a deal.

Terry McCormick of the Nashville City Paper is reporting that Crumpler and the Patriots are close, although a contract probably won't be signed until next week.

Waiting until next week gives both the Patriots and Crumpler time to look elsewhere, which has already happened with the Patriots and a free agent tight end once this offseason, when Daniel Fells appeared close to a deal only to re-sign with the Rams.

The Patriots are in need of a tight end after the departures of Ben Watson and Chris Baker this offseason.

A TE :)

I hope this happens. His blocking automatically nullifies a Freeney/Mathis and a Wake. If/when we wrap him up, we should be looking at a receiving TE next. Olson or through the draft.

Who's the best receiving TE in the draft? (besides Gresham). The BYU kid?

I think this would be a solid signing. Could be a good presence in the locker room as well.

I'm on board with this. 25-30 catches. Solid blocking in the passing & running games. Good vet presence....

I expect Pitta to go to Indy. And yes, I would go with Gresham, or Hernandez.

Hopefully a nice move.... if it happens.

Still puzzling over the Fells deal..well..falling through.

I don't profess to know where his game is right now, but In Atlanta he was pretty hard to stop in the passing game.

He averaged more than 50 catches in his last 3 years in Atlanta - the Titans are obviously a pretty heavy running team.

We might be getting a reasonable two-way threat.

Yep he used to be a good pass catcher, I remember when he was a top 10 TE in FF(for a couple/3 years or so), then he had some knee issues and finally went to Tenn and blocked on a primarily Running team.

If he's healthy I would think that he would be a good player.

Man i'd love to see BJGE get behind this guy.

I just like the idea of having a blocking TE named Crumpler. Kind of like having an LB whose name sounds like "Say 'Ow'".

" There go's LoMo to the right side, he's sliding behind.......WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEE did you see that!!! That dude was CRUMPLED!!!........Out of the corner of my eye I just saw this big OL looking dude just crumple that poor slob that came up to make the tackle, LoMo just scampered for an extra 20 due to that big man laying the wood.....someone get that license plate" !!

Any chance the Pats would trade their own 1st next year (ie not the Raiders one) instead of using a 2nd this year?

I truly hope they go after Olsen on draft day. He'd be another weapon that opponents would HAVE to respect. Plus, I'm sure he could improve his blocking through coaching. If not, I wouldn't mind having Pitta if he slipped past Indy.

Well they needed to sign *someone*.

Still can't shake the feeling that they will be taking Hernandez in Round 1 ....
