OT: Glanville on Farve

Have to wonder if this is a way for him to "justify" moving a HoFer.

Not a Favre fan, but obv he's been more productive than most QBs in his time. And people will point to his winning "only" one SB... but that was ONE more than many.

Wouldn't want him over Brady-Manning. But would take him (drunk or sober) over Vick-Chandler.

Favre was not well regarded in those days. People didn't know he was that good. Glanville is making excuses. I remember watching Favre for the first time at the Senior Bowl and thinking the guy was playing better than any QB I'd ever seen in that game (the only guy whose performance comes close is Aaron Rodgers who totally outplayed Alex Smith). It was a complete mystery to me why so many teams passed on Favre after that game. So, I tend to disbelieve Glanville on this...

I guess you never read any of the excerpts from Deanna's book. He was some piece of work. They were college sweethearts and had a child born in college, but he wouldn't marry her and after being drafted their relationship became very rocky and on again, off again through his early years. She often left him over drinking binges coupled with outright indifference for her or their child. They finally did marry, I think shortly after the addiction to pain meds incident when he appeared to have bottomed out, and they had another daughter born in '99, but then she eventually threatened divorce him over his alcoholism. He finally sobered up for good at that point. So he's now been sober for half his career...He has spoken about missing out on most of the older daughters childhood in some of his many recent retirement musings...

He was absolutely a handful, on and off the field. Holmgren managed to rein him in for a time in GB, but it was yeomans work and he left two years after the Superbowl season with Brett still battling his on and off field demons. There was a piece about their early years in SI:

Drinking is a HUGE part of Wisconsin social culture, especially beer.

Yep. Big reason Holmgren had Frank Winters function as essentially his stable pony. Although Winters struck me as the carousing sort as well.

But the fact is Brett was who he was for long periods before and after his brief encounter with Jerry...

I know a lot about Favre's drinking. I said I'm not buying Glanville's story. First, Favre wasn't well regarded. Many scouts and NFL types missed the boat on the guy. Second, I think what I'm saying stands up precisely because of Deanna's story. He continued to drink AND became a great QB.

Small school background killed Favre's draft status (2nd round ain't too shabby BTW). Clearly one of the best personnel men ever in Ron Wolf thought very highly of him...

Yes, I know. Some were wowed by him. I know I was. I always like watching the Senior Bowl because of watching Favre. I think player performance in actual games is important. Favre doesn't exactly pass the looks test.

that works both ways.........puking from hangovers before games would have been a much bigger red flag in some top tier school where the issue could have done him in

given he was an early 2nd round pick, the word was out on him........
