These guys have families. Get over it.

My heart just bleeds for them. They "work" 6-8 months out of the year and make millions of dollars doing it. They play 16 games a year and half of those games are at home... Family is not an excuse. This is a business.

I think I'm going to tell my boss I need to be with my family for for a few months. I'm sure he would understand : )

Bottom line is that the team leader should be here especially after coming off a mediocre season for himself and the team.

Wrong on so many levels.
1) They work year-round. Intensive offseason training is mandatory, for most, if you want to stick around in the league.
2) why does it matter that half of those games are at home? I'm willing to bet that a lot more than 50% of your work is at 'home' (aka in the state that you live in).
3) Their work is a lot more than showing up for 16 games per year. There's this thing called practice that they show up for too.
4) Rather than being jealous, maybe you should develop a rare and marketable skill like they have.
7) Don't analogize your relationship with your boss to Brady's/Warren's with Belichick. Your boss doesn't respect you even 1% that much, but if he did, you'd probably have generated some trust there. Enough that if you wanted to take some time out of voluntary activities for your family, he'd be okay with it.

I think the "8 road games per year" comment is meant to be directed at the notion that NFL players "have familes - get over it."

The point was made that NFL players really do have it pretty easy compared to other professional athletes from a standpoint of missing family time, which I think is a fair point. If you assume a player is going to live with his family within commuting distance of his place of employment, then he really spends very little time away from them. It's basically just 10 weekends per year, give or take the playoffs. Compare that to a baseball player who spends almost all of March in Florida/Arizona plus about 3 months on the road during the season.

Of course, if our hypothetical football player doesn't live near his place of employment, well then yeah he is going to have to choose between either missing some voluntary practices or spending time away from home.

Yeah, except for the part where they get to retire before they're 40, a luxury many do not have.

Their offseason is months long. Again, a luxury most do not have.

They get paid millions of dollars and can afford to fly out to their kids as often as they like or bring them there. Yet again, this is a luxury most do not have.

So spare me the sob stories. These guys get to spend more time with their families during their career and after than just about anyone else in this country.

Thank You

Excuses are for losers.

Not if their kids don't live in the same town where they play.

I'm not saying we should feel sorry for the players or even their families. I'm just saying the good aspects of their career come with a price, which can lead to some odd-looking tradeoffs being legit.

The Family Argument How do you think MLB players feel about your family defense of NFL players?

16 games Regular season..... (1 Half) are at home

baseball is what 164 games?

FAMILY DEFENSE is weak when you compare it to the MLB

NBA,NHL have it worse than NFL players in your family defense.

NFL players can make the problem go away by ensuring their families live with them in the town where they play, while MLB and NHL players can't.

On the other hand, bringing your family with you as an NFL player isn't as obvious a choice -- you're easier to cut, on average you make less money (at least than MLB and NBA players -- probably not NHL), and so on.

Dear Lord this place is spiraling out of control.

Dear Lord this place is spiraling out of control.

Nothing will stop the "The Pats are doomed unless they make X, Y, Z, and W changes, and by the way making those is impossible" crowd.

But other trends can perhaps indeed be reined in. ;)

Same as last year, and not much different, other than side of the spectrum, from last year's "Chung is God" type threads.

wtf are we talking about?

Are you kidding me? I thought we just needed X, Y and Z. Now you're saying we also need W..?!? Damn, the Jets, Phins and Bills really are getting the drop on us :D

it is their choice to work in a field where they must be away from families. I'm sure Walmart and dunkin donuts are hiring where they live. No one is forcing them to play football.

seriously, dude. Lots of jobs take people away from their families that pay less than millions per year.

I love it when people in jobs paying $100K and less defend spoiled multimillionaires.

I'm not one to post calling out a message-board in general -- but c'mon.

If a professional football player wants to spend time with his kids rather than make the locale of his daily workouts be Foxboro, that's his privilege.

And if he and his wife choose to raise their kids in some other city than the one where he's on the team, that's their privilege too.

I come from a small family, without strong geographical roots. But even I was separated from my father for a year or so twice, due to his work. If somebody has a lot of extended family and a travel-heavy job, it might make a lot of sense to leave his wife and kids in the area where the family is.

Was it really? I don't remember it being like this. The closest to these levels of hysteria I remember was during the 08 preseason games, which I believe is where "Blow It Up" came from.

By definition these workouts are are meant to be relaxed in nature and an individual decision wether to attend or not.

But..

Every year you hear of coaches being dissapointed that superstar Quarterback Helmut Stud hasn't turned up for "Voluntary" workouts. Fans start sh!tting themselves because their star player hasn't turned up for "Voluntary" workouts as he's setting a bad example. The whole things just a guilt trip for the players and isn't really voluntary at all....

For me personally aslong as Brady or whoever else turns up and sets the example during official and compulsary practice then thats all that matters. Brady is also a veteran who was setting examples and winning superbowls whilst these young players where still trying to finger cheerleaders in high school.

Last year got pretty brutal at times. Remember the trade Brady thread(s), for example?

Before the draft you get all the Chicken Littles wondering why the hell the Patriots didn't sign 42 All-Pro players within the first 15 minutes. After the draft, you get all the homers wondering how the hell Belichick managed to draft a future Hall Of Fame player with every single pick he used.

This year will be interesting, because it's the first time since 2003 that the team's actually coming off of a truly disheartening season where there are no excuses for the way the year played out. That has made the haters more aggressive and the homers more rigid in their defenses. That should ratchet up the intensity more and more as the offseason goes on. Hell, we're all still just wondering if Brady is angry and why Thomas didn't know when offseason workouts began. Just wait until the Patriots pass on a top notch defensive end, or linebacker, in the upcoming draft, in favor of a tight end, wide receiver or running back. The Chicken Littles will have a fit, and the homers will pop a circuit trying to defend an almost indefensible decision.

I keep telling you fools, we should have traded Tom Brady for a high draft pick a long time ago. We've missed out on some top talent: Big Ben, Eli Manning, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, and the list goes on and on. Meanwhile, we're stuck with this bum. Jeeezus.

And I know a lot of people are getting on TFB for not being at the offseason workouts right now but seriously... if you were married to Giselle, would you really not want to spend as much 'quality time' with her as humanly possible??

Oh, I'm sure you'll get some slobs up here telling you she's not good looking or somesuch when they're sitting in their mother's basement checking out the girls of the internet.

You know, I'd love to be an athlete, many on this board would feel the same way. But do not forget for one minute, that most of them pay the price. Forget about the damage from hitting your head all day, just try to get out of the bed in the morning and walk down a flight of stairs. Like I said, I'd like to be an athlete, maybe the kicker.

The same could be said by a whole lot of Sudanese about everybody here. Yet we worry about our lives even so.

Actually, going just by pictures I think there are a lot of at least somewhat hotter women.

But I take Tom's word for it when he says she's also a very special person. ;)
