Big Vince asking fans to donate to his foundation in the fight against diabetes

Vince and his fundraising campaign that he does annually for his foundation is once again asking Patriots fans and anyone who is able to give to this dreaded disease just to donate anything they can,even if its just a buck or two.

Vince will match up to $50,000 of all monies collected,so if you can give anything to try and help fight against this destructive disease that all people either have or know someone who does (my wife has it), I am sure he would appreciate this.

If this can be stickied as well until the fundraising is over this year,it would be cool

Far worse diseases? Your comments border on offensive and while Diabetes may not be a "quick killer" it affects more people than you can imagine. Here are actual FACTs (diabetes.org)

Total: 23.6 million children and adults in the United States—7.8% of the population—have diabetes.
Diagnosed: 17.9 million people
Undiagnosed: 5.7 million people
Pre-diabetes: 57 million people

So quick math is 23.6 million in 2007 with Diabetes in the US. Add to that 57 million people with Pre-Diabetes (have elevated blood sugar levels and on the verge of full blown Diabetes unless they make BIG changes) and you end up with 80+ Million people affected by this disease in the US alone! That more than a quarter of the population.

1 out of every 4 people!!!!!!!!

Over time this disease causes retinopathy, is a leading cause of non-traumatic amputations and is a leading cause in stroke and heart attack. People are only starting to realize just how horrible this disease is.

As far as race is involved, here are the statistics:

6.6% of non-Hispanic whites
7.5% of Asian Americans
11.8% of non-Hispanic blacks
10.4% of Hispanics

There are approximately 230 Million "white" americans, so while the percentage of diabetics is lower, non-hispanic whites still make up the largest population. But why bother going there? Is it less important to find a cure for a disease because it affects one race more than another? Hell NO! In fact, I'm pretty sure only you, archie bunker and a few white guys with pointy white hats feel that way. Disgusting!

Am I passionate about this? YES! I have a sister who was diagnosed at age 9 and I have worked in the industry for the last 5 years. I've seen her blood sugar level fall so low she went into a Diabetic coma.

When you have diabetes there are no days off! You're have to consider what you're eating, how active you are or aren't, medications and normal life occurrences that can affect your blood sugar, like stress, illness etc. It is a HORRIBLE thing to live with and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

So, while it may not seem like a worthy cause in your mind, you're wrong and full of ****. I'm done with this thread as it doesn't make sense to let someone ignorant on a subject to get you fired up as much I'm fired up now. I'll pray that you never have to find out personally just how horrible this disease is.

Now .. I'm off to figure out how to add someone to the ignore list.

You might need to check your insulin levels......Just for that rant, I'm going to give Vince some $$$$

There might be worse diseases like "Cancer, auto-immune diseases like MS, Huntington's" but i have witnessed the pain and suffering one person can take from this disease. I watched my mother day in and day out struggle as a diabetic and not to long ago she passed away. So i know when i donate im putting my money to good use and maybe one day that little bit might make a difference and someone like me wont have to go through the things i had to.

Totally understandable.... it effected him b/c of his Parents. Nothing was directed against Vince... just why Diabetes.... I wondered.

Take a look at something like MS (Multiple Sclerosis).....

I feel for them a hell of al ot more than Diabetes.

MS is a power slugger while diabetes is Tee Ball.

I think it is a great that any athlete get's involved with charities or community work regardless of the cause. What's worse is when they don't get involved in any foundation when they absolutley have the power to make positive impacts for people who are in need.

What an assinine, ill-informed post. Would you like to visit the 42-year of patient whom I met last week and tell him this? He has had diabetes since the age of 12 and, despite the "very simple" administration of insulin under the care of the experts at the Joslin Diabetes Clinic, has been on dialysis for the past 15 years. Did I mention that both of his legs have been amputated below the knee due to peripheral vascular disease and that he vomits after almost every meal due to gastroparesis? I won't tell you whether he is white, black, hispanic or asian, because it really shouldn't matter.

While I support funding for whatever disease one feels is a worthy cause (my father has Parkinson's disease and I'd love it if there was more money available for Parkinson's research), the reality is that childhood and adult onset diabetes are far more destructive diseases than MS or Huntington's. The costs of caring for the diabetic population in the United States are huge - chronic kidney disease, heart disease, neuropathy, etc. As mentioned by another poster, it is even more dangerous b/c it can be a "silent killer" for many years. Vince should be applauded for attempting to make the public aware of the dangers of the disease. If you'd rather give to another cause, perhaps one that more frequently affects the white population, simply do so....and then STFU.

I am well aware that MS is a terrible disease. I see patients for complications of MS and I know what some go through on a daily basis. I'm sorry that these are issues that you do and will continue to have to struggle with.

While I'm sure that you are well-informed about MS, you are clearly ill-informed about diabetes. It is not very livable or controllable for some people. It is not "nothing" for many people, particularly those with juvenile onset disease.

Comparing one disease to another is never a productive exercise. Next time you should simply post a link about MS so that members of the site can become more educated about your disease. Don't belittle the plight of diabetics and definitely don't make it a racial issue.

What some don't realize is that not only is Diabetes a deadly disease if not treated right but it also can result in lost limbs,especially the feet and severe disabilities which include damaging of heart and brain tissue.

I can almost guarantee that there are at least 25% people in this very forum who have the disease and don't yet know it if they have not been tested in the past year or two - There are few signs if at all and diabetes is becoming out of control and developing in an alarming amount of new victims added everyday.

My wife first discovered her affiliation with the disease by just getting a reading from her neighbor who has it,My wife had a reading of 425 and never realized the danger she was in,since that high reading she is trying to combat the disease by excersizing and losing weight but that can only delay high blood glucose numbers,it cannot control it,she remains with numbers in the 130-170 range on an average day.

Please understand why Vince is doing this and know it is a very worthy cause,Vince is not just all about big money and contracts - this man has a heart as big as his body.

My GF actually received a direct tweet from Wilfork yesterday, he was talking about how everyone should contribute 2.00 each, and that if all his twitter followers did that it would total like 17,000. He then said he'd match it, etc.

My GF replied that she'd send a little more than that, etc--and he responded to her, thanked her personally, or as personal as you can get via twitter. At any rate, she was excited that he took the time to respond etc.

I personally don't think it's wise to bash on one Disease because it may not be as debilitating as another, it actually pushes people away from the message you are trying to deliver.
People that have diseases that require funding should be Thankful that folks are setting up Foundations, and praising them for it instead of saying "Where's mine, my disease is worse".

Is Diabetes the "worst" Disease ever? Not IMO
Does it deserve funding to try and find a cure? Of course it does, it affects MILLIONS of people, and as stated there are MILLIONS of people that don't even know that they have it yet, they won't know until there is an "unrelated" problem that sends them to the hospital, it is there that they will find out that they have Diabetes.

All Diseases deserve funding, noone I know of has ever asked to be afflicted with a Disease.

I have Diabetes, Type II. I control it through diet, exercise and medicine, but it's still pita. I'd very much like to find a cure. I wish there was one, because I'd love to just once be able to go out to eat and order whatever I wanted. I'd love to not have to check my Blood Glucose levels 4 times a day. I'd love to not have to take the medicine. Mostly, I'd love to not have to shell out so much money for meds and testing supplies.

But you do what you have to do. Like Coach says: "It is what it is."
