I expect a WR or a TE this week.
==================================
We had a GREAT week one, re-signing our own.
===================================
We still need to re-sign or replace or upgrade for these SEVEN positions
WATSON
THOMAS
BAKER
BURGESS
GREEN
WELKER (actually we need a #2; Edelman replaces Welker in the slot)
HANSON
===================================
There may be many more opportunities to upgrade or bring in camp competition, but these seven NEED action.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has Started

Interestingly, as of 3/13 midday-

Seven teams -- Dallas, Carolina, Philadelphia, Seattle, New York (Giants), Tampa Bay and Oakland -- have not signed or re-signed a UFA.
(scratch Philly they just signed very minor deal with Baskett)

17 teams haven't signed an UFA from another team

12 teams haven't signed any of their own UFA's

There's a lot of pass rushing on that list.

Or rather, a lot of what had been hoped-for pass-rushing.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

You say you expect a TE or WR.

Who do you expect? There are no TE's in the Free Agent market that will make a difference to our offense.

WR? Aside from TO, there isn't a difference maker available there either.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

There really isn't much out there. At this point, most of the Pats free agent signings will jags. They are going to have to bank on the draft.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

here is a list of some guys that are left.

WR

Terrell Owens, is the only guy left that can be the #2

Muhsin Muhammad, nice and old just how the pats like them lol

Domenik Hixon, ok #4

Torry Holt, WR, could be a nice #3

Laveranues Coles, good #3

Josh Reed, good #3

Javon Walker, ok #4

DE

Charles Grant, not sure if he can play the 3-4

Dwan Edwards, would add good dept.

Cory Redding, good dept maybe a spot starter.

OLB

Adewale Ogunleye, 4-3 DE 3-4 OLB

Leonard Little, 4-3 DE 3-4 OLB

Greg Ellis, would add some good dept and has played 3-4 OLB

Derrick Burgess, the best opt out there he should be re-signed

Jason Taylor, not sure he has anything left.

not much left but there are a few guys who can fill some holes and add some dept.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

I expect nothing this week.

Also I think Burgess will be given a chance to compete for a job this fall. He did pick up on the two gap technique in the last few games and was able to shed far more effectively.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

If we pick anyone up, my guess (and hope) is it's a guy like Mike Vrabel who was an unknown when we got him, but didn't last long as an unknown once he got here. Maybe it's just the hype and increased expectations, but it seems like many of the big name players we sign don't yield big time results.

I think a guy like McGowan fits the "largely unknown but does a good job" description.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

i think we are done in FA...there isn't anything out their worth it. We will do some damage in the draft and then see who gets cut this summer.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

"We had a GREAT week one"???????????

How so...the team is worse off then when the season ended. No tight end whatsoever...as they let 2 good tight ends walk and only one decent healthy receiver

The passive approach by the front office has taken all of the air out of the Patriots balloon. There is nothing but trash left in the free agent market and they have passed on many very good players who could have helped.

Now the team is desperate at certain positions and left hoping for rookies to step in and be difference makers.

They are now third best team in the division. Its hard to do cartwheels when they sign their own free agents who never should have gotten to free agency in the first place. The FO performance has been pathetic

If this is a "great week one" I hate to think of what a less than great week two will be.

OH I know here come the "you are a troll " "you suck" "stop whining" etc standard reflex responses from the Kool Aid drinkers.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

Maybe I drink a little too much Kool-Aid, I'll admit, but the Pats are now the third worse team in the division? Easy, kid, it's a long way down off that the bridge. Please, put on your Tom Brady Superman cape before you jump, OK?:D

I wouldn't say the team is worse off, but they are not better either. They parted ways with two non-factor TE's. As much as I liked Watson effort he just never lived up to the hype and where was Baker all year? Also, I the young DB's (Chung, Butler) have a year in the system and will be better than last year.

As far as WR goes, for a rookie Edelman had a decent year. And don't discount Brandon Tate, you haven't seen what he can do.

I would hate to say it there wasn't much other than trash on pile to begin with since most FA's became RFA's. As far as resigning their own I liked it. You do realize these guys signed after seeing what the market was. Bodden and Wilfork saw what others were signing for and came back to reality. Granted, I think Banta-Cain's contract is a little excessive.

Umm.. Newsflash for you. Edelman is healthy and a damn good receiver. He's not a HOFer, but he's light years better than Aiken.

The passive approach by the front office has taken all of the air out of the Patriots balloon. There is nothing but trash left in the free agent market and they have passed on many very good players who could have helped.

WTF are you smoking??? Seriously. There is plenty left on the free agency market. And the Pats took a very aggressive approach. Just because they didn't throw $50 MILLION at 2 players doesn't mean they weren't aggressive.

And which players did they supposedly pass on?? And how do you know, for certain they would have helped in the Pats system? My guess is that you are clueless on both counts.

Now the team is desperate at certain positions and left hoping for rookies to step in and be difference makers.

HUH??? They are??? WOW. I didn't realize it was TC time already. Did you ever stop to think that some of the issues are with the PLAYERS and not the Patriots?? NOPE. You didn't.

They are now third best team in the division. Its hard to do cartwheels when they sign their own free agents who never should have gotten to free agency in the first place. The FO performance has been pathetic

What's been pathetic is your ranting and whining. You clearly don't understand the salary cap nor do you understand how signing these guys to extensions affects it. The Joey Porter Fiasco in Miami should have given you a clue. Up until the start of free agency, the 2009 cap was still in force. And, since the Patriots only had 3 million in cap space, it was pretty hard for them to do much of anything in terms of extensions.

If this is a "great week one" I hate to think of what a less than great week two will be.

OH I know here come the "you are a troll " "you suck" "stop whining" etc standard reflex responses from the Kool Aid drinkers.

It's not a matter of drinking the Kool Aid. It's a matter of you not knowing what you are talking about and making statements that you just can't support. So, do us all a favor and either learn the game and the business side of it better or go whine somewhere else.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

I would not say the pats had a very dynamic week 1, but they did keep the most important defensive pieces they needed to keep........

I think they are taking the shrewd approach in the face of an unknown labor situation......

I did notice a few people who poo-poo'd the signing of peppers state that the pats would be smart to try to make a play for suh in the draft........not sure it make sense to spend close to the same money on a rookie while using up a bunch of draft resources in the process........

the bottom line is that they simply don't have the LB's compete right now

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

We had a GREAT week one, re-signing our own.

Is there any reason why our guys could not have been resigned between when we lost to the Ravens and last week?

I've heard people say that since resigning our own was a priority we didn't have the resources to grab any outside players.

The Pats had negotiations with them. They saw what the Pats were offering. Thought it was below market value. After free agency started they saw what the market was for their respective positions, especially Wilfork, he saw what Casey Hampton signed for. Also, Bodden visited the Texans and saw what they were offering. They realized what the Pats were offering was more than fair.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

11 teams signed zero free agents so far this season.

The patriots signed Banta-Cain, Neal, Bodden and Faulk this last week.

In addition, we extended Wilfork and made a minor acquisition before the free agency began (Patten).
==================================

Make no mistake, we would be in much, much, much worse shape had we not signed any free agents this week. Banta-Cain and Bodden were MAJOR signings.

I would argue that only Chicago did better this last week.
==================================

For those who think that we are 3rd in the division, you are certainly entitled to your positions. IMHO, the patriots are the division winners last year, and need to solve their receiver situation to repeat. As far as defense, the youngsters are just that; they will improve. We have re-tooled. And yes, we expect to upgrade for Green at DE and add a LB.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

8 of them are prevented from doing so until they lose a free agent.

Re: Free Agency - Week Two has started

I believe that's not true. The second four just can't sign high-priced free agents. There si no limit on mid-level free agents.

8 of them are prevented from doing so until they lose a free agent.

regarding TE's......

I have been hearing that is is the deepest Draft for TE's in quite sometime.

even in round 4.... the likely hood of drafting a good player for TE is very possible and probable. It is suppose to be very very deep draft w/ many good Tight Ends.
