Does this team have a need for another fullback that we didn't have in 2009?

Sammy Morris tried playing the position for a few times last season but was gobbled up and spit out by linebackers, maybe time for another big bruiser via a cheap FA or a late draft pick?

In FA - Maybe a Justin Griffith or Terelle Smith or even Eckel back?

Or in the Draft in the 6th or 7th for a Manase Toga or Willie Rose?

Yes, there is a need.
No, belichick does not see that need.
The chances of a late round rookie making the team as a fullback are nil.

maroney is at he's best with a FB leading the way. but it's kinda hard to use a FB when your in shotgun 90% of the time lol

Is he? Did he run behind a FB at Minn? He sure hasn't with the Pats except for short yardage situations.

I feel we suffered immensely when we lost Evans to the Saints. He was a pure fullback and a very good one at that because he thought like a RB and seemed to always get the key stone or block.

We have tried everyone from Morris, BJGE, to Connolly, and haven't found anything that really clicks. Using BJGE as a FB is in my opinion a gross misuse of his talent.

We havent used a fullback in years, so no there is not a need

i rember maroney, haveing a few nice game with Evans at FB. im not saying a lead blocker will turn maroney in to a all pro. but it would be nice to see the pats run something other then shotgun

:)

Some would say that we haven't had a fullback in years (since Evans), and that THEREFORE it clearly a need. Personally, there is zero question in my mind. A fullback (who can block, catch and play STs) is worth more than a #5 running back.

So one year then ;)

Also a good solid bruising Fullback assigned for mainly his blocking ability lessens the teams need for a big blocking TE and maybe look more for some TEs with pass catching skills.

I think this years team with the current sorry depth at WR screams that its about time to use the TE in pass situations more and use the fullback out of the backfield if he can play with some Faulk-like duties with catching as well.

We made use of it early in the decade, plus Evans. We obviously liked Graham with thw wham play, not sure about Watson. Either way, we need a consistent running game and have no TEs or fullbacks so who knows?

I have to wonder if a fullback isn't better that a TE that catches 20 passes?

I guess we'll see.

The need is there, yes. But that doesn't mean that Belichick will necessarily address it. I'd like to see us draft a guy in the late rounds and stash him on the practice squad. At the rate things are going, it looks like Connolly is gonna be filling in again this year. Still, alot can change between now and the draft so we'll see.

A thought: What if we signed Crumpler as a TE/FB hybrid? He does have the size and would be an asset in blocking. I'd go with that idea to start.

No TEs no FBs, just 8 RBs.

We either need a FB or a larger bruising type back or preferably both. I sense less shotgun next year. More Brady under center. We are going to evolve positionally at both TE and RB. TE as a position has been flushed. Running back is next up. 2 out of 5 will be gone.

A need?

Well I guess if you want to start milking the clock playing smash-mouth wearing down the other teams defense, meanwhile keeping their Offense off the field for long stretches and winning the TOP by a longshot, and making your defense look even better because they are alot fresher, it may be helpful.

If you hope to score quickly many times and then hope that your defense can hold the other team even if they lose the TOP by a longshot, then I guess you really don't need one.

We've had both variants, guess which teams were more successful when it counted?

Pats don't use the FB in their offense. So huh  It's like asking if a Golfer who never uses a sand wedge needs a sand wedge. Technically it's a tool that could be used, but if he doesn't use it, why does he need to make his bag any heavier?

I liked BJGE as our fullback in iso when Maroney was the RB. It seemed to be effective, while FB dives would work as well.

not if the pats are going to operate out of the shotgun 80% of the time

Evans became a good FB. He was a good receiving option and was a decent blocker. He played TE too. When he was signed he was a decent RB nothing great but developed into a good Blitz guy.In his last year him and faulk rotated against heavy blitz teams

ofcourse people here were so happy he left ...and now we had to have faulk pay the most snaps than any RB due to this. Lucky he was not injured.
