After watching some Combine coverage and contemplating what BB will do in the draft, I keep coming back to Defensive Linemen. I know there is a need for WR, and RB.

But knowing a bit about how BB thinks, I believe it will be a DL.

I came to this conclusion by thinking about the longevity of positions and their value in the draft.

Most recently, everyone thought the Texans were nuts for picking Mario Willians ( I think ) over Reggie Bush. When I compare the career length of a DLinemen, versus a RB, the pick is a no brainer.

When trying to construct a NFL team, I want to focus my high draft picks on positions that have the most longevity if they work out. Why waste a high number 1 draft pick on a RB that will probably only be a stud for 4 years?

On the other side of that coin, you can spend the same amount of money and draft position to select a DLinemen, Tight End, WR, or QB which will more than likely have a 10 year career as a highly productive player on the team.

When I consider the true value of a player and position, it makes no sense to draft a RB, Safety, or Conerback high in the Draft. The amount of years a Safety is productive is typically short, RB's lose their step, as well as Corners lose their speed as well.

Whereas, you can draft a monster DLineman, and for the next 6-8 years, have a solid player that can make Safeties, and Corners better.

When I think about this, and knowing BB mastery of the game, I see why he drafts TE's so much, and Defensive Linemen, those 2 positions, other than QB, seem to have the longest careers, and they are the smartest investment when talking about investing top money in a first round pick.

Now, after Wilfork is signed, we need someone to pair with him which will equally create pressure and double teams... I want to see a stud Dlineman drafted with our first round pick, to help create pressure and stop the run.

Your point is kind of moot with regard to tight ends because both Graham and Watson appear to be gone in about 5 years each. You're not factoring free agency into the equation.

Additionally you're leaving OL out of the equation. OL tend to have long careers if they are elite players.

I do agree however that a DL would make the most sense in the first round of this year's draft, in particular a 300 lb+ Defensive End.

Our TE's that we drafted haven't stuck with the team, but if they were good, they would have and they would have had 10 year careers.

Look around the league at the productive TE's and just about everyone of them has been around for the past 8+ years.

O-Lineman as well fit that description, but I don't think we need one, so I didn't care to mention them.

So right now we have 3 healthy WR's and 0 TE's on the roster. Is this really a passing offense?

Ochmed - just a couple of points.

The Pats actually have 10 WRs on the roster. However, 2 of those really should be listed as special teams only players in Aiken and Slater. Moss, Patten, and Edelman are the 3 "healthy" ones you are referring to. Welker, Tate and Jenkins were all injured. And there is no telling the shape that Barnes and White are in, though I am guessing they will be in pretty good shape.

As for the TEs, we have 2 guys who aren't proven. Agnone, who is coming off an injury, but is supposedly an excellent receiver and decent blocker and Myers who is more of an H-back.

I agree and if my life depended on guessing our 1st pick, Odrick would be it. We'll get a receiver or TE/pass-rusher/RB in second round.

Was talking about this elsewhere yesterday, strangely enough.

If you look at our Draft history under BB, it's normally the biggest need in the first round, then players of need after that, and value later. Rarely does he truly do value in the first round or early on.

Our biggest need is DE/OLB. I believe we will go with that in the first round, and maybe Draft a second later on. Especially seeing as Caserio (ergo BB) thinks it's one of the deepest groups this year.

After that, WR is probably the biggest need, and I think we'll take WR with the #44 pick.

Let me amend my earlier statement, not counting the PS, Dregs (positionless players), JAGS and washed up out of football retreads, we only have 3 HEALTHY WR and 0 TE's are the roster.

I think you start to go off-course when you talk about value and need as being two separate attributes.

I think BB always goes for best value in every pick. However, I believe that in the equation for VALUE, there is a variable called NEED buried in the algorithm. So to grossly oversimplify, a possible calculation would be:

VALUE = .50 talent + .15 upside after NFL coaching + .20 need in next 2 years + .15 character

That way, BB takes the best available value, which necessarily is slanted towards areas of need.

As Jimmie Walker used to say, That's the way I see it!

My 7-round mock draft

Just dropping by to post my completed 7-round mock draft. Why should you pay any attention to it? No reason other than me being a hardcore fan that spent many hours (yes, I'm single) putting it together. In the end, all mocks are hypothetical simulations of course, so I don't claim for it to be anything more than that. I included AdamJT13's famous compensatory pick projections as well. The mock draft takes into account a balance of 'best player available,' team needs, rolling draft grades from various pundits, my own opinion, as well as what we know about the tendencies of those making the war room decisions for each respective franchise.

44. DE Corey Wootton, Northwestern
47. TE Rob Gronkowski, Arizona
53. WR Brandon LaFell, LSU
119.G Brandon Carter, Texas Tech

245.(proj. comp. pick) OLB Dexter Davis, Arizona State
246.(proj. comp. pick) C Erik Cook, New Mexico
248.(proj. comp. pick) OT Tony Washington, Abilene Christian

Welcome and thanks for the Draft.

Some thoughts on it from our POV?

Starts well, very well, in fact I'd be delighted with those two picks. The rest though - meh.

We don't use TE's in the passing game enough to warrant a high pick on one.

LaFell is a bust waiting to happen. Unathletic, slow, terrible hands. A typical LSU receiver.

Carter is not a fit for our O-line. We draft mobile, athletic guys, not maulers. He's a Dallas type.

Angerer is a 4-3 MLB only for me (and we already have one of those). Don't see a fit in the 3-4 at all either.

Brown - happy with that, been pushing his name since the turn of the New Year. Would be happy with his buddy Bryan Anderson too.

Anderson is good value down there I suppose. Would rather a Joique Bell or Deji Karim though.

Don't see Washington making it to the 7th round (same for Dexter Davis, I think he could be a raiders shock target higher). In fact I think someone will gamble on him in the third or fourth round. Would be happy with that though, he's an *******, but a very very talented *******.

Overall very impressed although I'd question some of your values (Scott Long, Seyi Ajirotutu, Emmanuel Sanders, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim etc not being picked until the 7th round, Danario Alexander and others in the 6th round).

Still, well done

Yeah, what he said. First of all, as someone who does a 7-round mock every year, kudos on the effort. From your screen name though, I'm guessing you're a Skins fan, and not so much with the Patriots. Lafell, Angerer, and Carter just don't fit what we do here. I think we'd all pretty much be shocked. Seems early for Wooten too.

Going by the rest of your board, I think a plausible Pats draft, assuming no trades, might start:

22. DE Jared Odrick
45. WR Arrelious Benn
47. OLB Koa Misi
53. RB Ben Tate
119. TE Tony Moeaki
157. DE Arthur Jones
186. LB Te'o-Neisham
225. OT Will Barker....

Re: My 7-round mock draft

Don't see Washington making it to the 7th round (same for Dexter Davis, I think he could be a raiders shock target higher).

I think the recent revelations of the incident when he was 16 may cause some teams to think twice which may cause him to go lower in the draft.....

Re: My 7-round mock draft

An interesting effort, thanks for sharing.

Patriots picks

22. OLB Brandon Graham, Michigan -- I count about 6 teams who are likely to see Graham as a better fit for what they do before NE picks - and Belichick hasn't shown any desire to draft major conversion projects in the first round.
44. DE Corey Wootton, Northwestern
47. TE Rob Gronkowski, Arizona -- The kid is coming off major medical and hasn't played football in over a year, while Belichick will gamble more in the second, he prefers to wait a round for medical projects.
53. WR Brandon LaFell, LSU -- If he slides this far I can see him.
119.G Brandon Carter, Texas Tech -- As others have said, he's a phone booth fighter and not an open field greyhound, which means he's not a fit for NE.
157.ILB Pat Angerer, Iowa -- I can see this pick, it's not a sexy pick, but the guy is getting compared to Zach Thomas, which begs the question of whether he can make himself skinny to sidestep blockers and meet the ball carrier in the hole? If he can do that like Zach could, he's gold.
186.WR Antonio Brown, Central Michigan
225.RB Andre Anderson, Tulane
235.(proj. comp. pick) OT Casey Knips, South Dakota State
245.(proj. comp. pick) OLB Dexter Davis, Arizona State
246.(proj. comp. pick) C Erik Cook, New Mexico
248.(proj. comp. pick) OT Tony Washington, Abilene Christian

No real issue with any of the other picks, you may wish to reconsider assigning NE only the one Defensive Lineman - in a deep draft for DL it stands to reason a man who appreciates his DL the way Bill Belichick does will find a way to take more then one.

Re: My 7-round mock draft

I think the recent revelations of the incident when he was 16 may cause some teams to think twice which may cause him to go lower in the draft.....
That's a tough one to project.

-- The kid has some real talent for LT.
-- Any team that takes him will have a major travel nightmare to jump through all the legal hoops necessary to permit him to travel with the team.
-- There will likely be a special security detail needed to accompany him when traveling, for his protection and to ease the concerns of local authorities.
-- He's been through two serious threat analysis/background checks for the two college programs he's played in, both appear to have been very thorough and found him to be a low risk. Both college programs are part of a Church-centered education program where a young man with his background has the chance to receive a solid foundation for their rehabilitation.

Based on the article, it appears he came from a dysfunctional family background, the kind of nasty home situation where children get truly messed up. (I have to wonder if his sister was ever registered as a sex offender?) There seems to have been an effort to get this kid straightened out and from the article he seems to have made an effort to help himself within the support structure created for him.

For his sake I hope he is drafted or signed by a team like NE which has the team culture to support and encourage his continued rehabilitation. If he should wind up in a place like Oakland or Cincinnati...poor bastitch.

Does the Raider pick for next year come into play at all? Does anyone think they may wait in the first on the d line this year and grab the best stud available with at least a top 15 next year?

I very much doubt NE uses that pick for trade this year. It's my opinion that 2011's draft class is very poor and gets thin fast once you get out of the first round projections - and that's with the juniors declaring early. 2011 has the potential to be another 2007 draft class, which is why I want NE to retain it's Oakland pick for a shot at quality talent in the top 15, but would be interested in using any of the other 2011 picks to bundle with this draft's picks in an effort to move around and draft the 2010 players they want the most.

We also have to think in terms of 2012 - unless there is a new CBA, or the owners put alternative planning into play, there is no 2012 draft.
