Suppose we draft Cody. We put him in the middle and move Vince over. Does he have the ability to pressure the QB? Is he too slow.
I cant remember if he did this at Miami in collage.

BB is now running the defense and make make some changes.
Good idea or bad idea?
thanks

When you have a guy who has a very strong case for being best in the league at his position you don't draft a replacement and then move him.

For certain matchups Vince can play DE but he's not a DE. He may be quick for his size but he's certainly not remotely fast for a DE. We have a stud NT, play him there and get a real DE. If you want to draft Cody, put him and Wilfork in the middle at DT and switch to a 4-3. Of course then Warren wouldn't be a great fit at DE but that's another issue.

Vince Wilfork - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilfork attended the University of Miami where he participated in both football and track and field; he holds the Miami indoor school record in the shot put. In his freshman season, Wilfork did not start but played in every game as a defensive tackle, finishing tenth in the team on tackles with 41 while also recording a sack and forcing three fumbles. Wilfork did not start a game in his 2002 sophomore season either, but still recorded 43 tackles and seven sacks. Before the 2003 season, Wilfork was rated the second best defensive tackle in the country by The Sporting News and went on to start all 13 games for Miami. He finished the year with a career high 64 tackles and led the team with 20 quarterback hurries. He was named to the All-Big East Conference first-team following the season, which would prove to be his last in Miami as he decided to forgo his senior season and enter the 2004 NFL Draft.

He had the skill set in College and he reminds me of Ngata (just 2 inches shorter)..

I've been saying this for a while.. Signing Wilfork up to a DT deal saved us roughly 4-5 million a year.. He's talented enough to play the position (had the chance against Miami and played well against LONG) and would save us money in the long run..

Yes he can rush like Sapp in a 4-3. No advantage to moving him IMO. Fill the other position.

I'm gonna fall back on the old, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." He's the best in the NFL at what he does. I don't see him, seven years after his Graduation, morphing back into a Pass Rusher in a much faster game environment.

Have you seen him waddling after the QB when he breaks through the line ? And, if so, why would you possibly want that playing at DE. He's a great athlete for a NT. He's a poor athlete for a DE.

He isn't going to rush the passer as a DE in our system anyway. Leave him at the position he knows best.

Wilfork can collapse the pocket and take two or three linemen out of a play, but I think it'd be a stretch to call him a pass-rusher.

yeah, I saw him waddling after edwards in week one when he got that bogus brady rule penalty, but clearly he's not moving to full time DE in a 4-3, if that's the question.

I think Brace could play that opposite tackle in a 4 man front. We wouldn't need to daft Cody. More like weakside DE to gradually stand up at OLB.

Brace or Pryor could do it - in different ways. I still think the answer on Vince, though, is he's a good pass rusher for a NT. But not for a DE in any formation.

Sorry. I am a homer and a Vince fan, but zero sacks is zero sacks. Over his six year career Vince has averaged one (1) sack per season. There are literally hundreds of passes thrown on first and second down each season. It is nearly impossible to play that many downs and average only one sack per year.

I personally feel that Vince is the best run stopping NT in the NFL, but to say Vince "is a good pass rusher for a NT", I don't see the evidence.

I think he has quickness, is slippery, and has enormous leverage. If he was not double or triple teamed on every play, he would be in the QB's face on most plays...or he would drive the center right through the QB.

He is the anchor you build a line around. Leave him at NT except against the Dolfiends; that must have been a shock for Jake Long when he first lined up, looked up, and saw Vince with his big smile! Jake knew he was in for a rough day; not gonna move big Vince out of the hole...

LOL, you are right but I do believe that if Vince were asked to rush then we would see the evidence. He's taken out on most passing downs so he doesn't get a lot of chances to be a good pass rusher "for a NT".

Vince would be a great pass rusher if the opposing QB were holding a Twinkie

I think he could defentely rush the passer...we havnt asked him to do wthis however, so we dont truly know, but his ability is amazing

I agree!! Wilfork is too valuable at our NT position. It has been said that there is very few Wilfork's out there to put in NT to have a great 3-4 defense. Plus Big Vince clogs up that middle just fine! What we need is good DE!

Not that much because he's asked to tie up the C/G... When asked in a DE position, he did a great job against a great player..

Bottom line, Front 7 Needs to get better.. I think it would take less time to get the most out of a NT than it would a RDE..

If you never try to improve on what you have, you will never improve. The best you can hope for is to maintain the status quo, which isn't that good for our DL.

BB worked under Ted marchibroda in the 70's. I lived in MD at the time, and Ted's philosophy was to strengthen your strengths. Make one unit that will totally dominate, and that will swing many games your way, as your remaining units only need to hold their own most of the time.

Besides, our pass rush WAS broken last year, and it needs fixing.

Wilfork has played spot DE for us, and one game against Miami, he played the entire game at the position (BB later said he needed to put our best DL opposite Long).

I think this is an excellent idea. I like Cody a lot. Draft him in round 2 and put him in the middle. With him and Wilfork each commanding double teams, Warren and an OLB rusher can get to the QB early and often.

I really do not understand this

1)Vince is a top NT in the league. It takes time for NT to develop. SO having invested the time to develop him you want to now take the challenge of developing another one over the next 2-3 yrs?.

2)he is considered one of the top 2-3 NT in the league why would you move him to the outside so he has to learn a new position.

3)So instead of addressing the 3-4 end position to strength the line you want to put vince there and have him learn while you spend a year or 2 developing another NT

4)Vince due his play lets us use lighter faster LB like mayo ,guyton in the middle. If you put a rookie in there make sure you open a slot for this guys in the IR after being bashed by gaurds for a few games.
