Jameson Konz' "freakish" Pro Day

Because Kent's pro day conflicted with those of major schools with multiple prospects, such as Nebraska, Idaho, Oregon and Boston College, attendance at Kent was scarce. In fact, the Browns were the only NFL team to send a scout.

What he saw was Konz put on an athletic display described as "freakish."

Konz measured 6-3 and 234 pounds. He was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.46 seconds. Asked to run a second one, he timed 4.38.

Konz also posted a 46-inch vertical jump and a broad jump of 10 feet, 8-1/4 inches.

Konz is considered a prospect to play tight end, H-back or fullback in the NFL. His numbers better the top figures posted by any tight end or fullback at the NFL Scouting Combine.

If he has his buddy Julian's work ethic. . . .

Additional fact - he started at LB for two years !!! At the very least he is a special teams demon. Played WR as a Sr with 21 catches 2 TDs and 14.2 avg. FB/H Back/WR

I have him as my last Comp pick in the 7th Rd.

If BB can convert their QB to WR,why can't he convert this guy with huge measurables to FB or TE. A TE that runs a 4.38 and can catch in traffic is a nightmare for an opposing defense.

I totally posted about this in one of the sleeper threads, but no one read it. Everyone hates me!

Nah, no worries. Thanks for posting about this. It's good for people to hear about small school guys who could be on our radar. After all, we took two of their players to camp last year, so we're definitely aware of their program. Could be a great utility player for us--ST to start, probably, but could play WR/TE/FB/LB/S as well. He has better measurables than Mays, actually . . . imagine him as an enforcer in the secondary? Since he's played TE and WR, I have to believe he'd at least be accustomed to playing in space, and with his LB experience, he knows how to hit. Hm. Now I'm intrigued.

I think that once the buzz of Konz' performance filters through the scouting community, he may not be available in the seventh, though. Thankfully we have a lot of late round picks; there's no reason not to reunite him with his quarterback. Great football names, there: Konz and Julian. Haha.

I would be surprised if anyone did draft him before the seventh, we're not talking about a guy with a position, he's an experiment in athleticism and not known as a returner, hence a 7th round project.

Yes but wasn't the same true with Edelman, he was a QB but we had no intention of using him as such, having him be a WR was an experiment and a magnificent one at that. I think Konz will make an outstanding WR for the Pats.

The guy's a supersized version of Edelman, he's stout enough to go over the middle, he played LB previously.

NE sent both their WR and STs coaches to work out Edelperson. In rookie camp they had him taking RB reps.

The Pats had some thoughts about what Edelman might do for them, but until they got him into camp he was just an athlete. Kent State has had Konz for 4-5 years already, and they don't know what to do with him. Each one of us can sit at home and pick a position for Konz, until he's doing it in camp against NFL level athletes, he's just an experiment. Seventh round.

Edelman had somethiing else too, though -- the intense competitive drive and football IQ to become a successful college quarterback at 5'10" with a noodle arm.

IMO a conversion project from multiyear starting QB is very, very different from a kid with loads of athletic talent who never quite found a position.

Slater was a known quantity as a returner and coverage man on STs, his unknown elements were his role as a position player. Teams will spend a second round pick on a proven return man, the fifth for Slater wasn't much of a stretch. Konz, to my knowledge, hasn't been used as a returner, which is where pure ST's selections seem to be centered. I won't say a sixth is impossible, especially if NE gets a comp pick for Gaffney in the sixth and suspects another team may want him, but it does require some imagination to project NE using a sixth on a player who doesn't have a position, or a returner resume.

Cleveland has a high pick in the 7th, if they dont take him there its pretty telling that they shrunk the field down to 34-35 yards and couldnt count. Or simple smoke screen....I cant get exited about a athlete, I like football players.
