Filthy Four - version 2 - March 12, 2010

Idea is to fire off four picks, rapid fire style until the draft.

I use this board but feel free to use your own:

Shooting from the hip

#22 - Carlos Dunlap, OLB/DE, Florida
- skillset to become the new McGinest or Vrabel or even kick inside on obvious passing situations
- thought process, potential is out of the world, top 10 talent

#44 - Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
- offensive playmaker
- thought process - becomes the lightening to some stiff's thunder at the TE position

#47 - Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
- adds a good (not great player) to the secondary
- thought process, might as well have a good secondary for once

#53 -Arthur Jones, DE, Syracuse
- rotational DE
- thought process, have to feed the beast, always a need at DLine

Look to add more competition at LB and a developmental WR in the later rounds. Maybe a player like Hardy drops who could be tapped to replace Jarvis Green.

Using those rankings...

#22 Derrick Morgan OLB. Can't believe he's rated 34th! This makes our draft.
#44 Demaryius Thomas WR. In the 2nd round, he's worth it, but not in the 1st imo.
#47 Alex Carrington DE. He needs to gain about 15-20 lbs, but he's super quick. How does he do at handling double teams though?
#53 Devin McCourty CB. Rated 99th?? I know... I didn't take a TE, but McCourty vs a tight end?? He's too good to pass up!

Wow. I really question a lot of these rankings. Charles Brown, Roger Saffold, Matt Tennant, Chad Jones, Montario Hardesty, and Anthony McCoy aren't even listed? They may not all be second rounders, but I guarantee you that most of them will go in the top 100. Weird. Anyway, a lot of the guys I like as football players and think are good scheme fits aren't even on the list (cf. half the guys above), so I'm tempted to trade down into the third and fourth and pick up loads of picks. For the sake of the game, I'll play along, but I'm not happy with the rankings.

22. Everson Griffen - best combination of hybrid DE/OLB big-bodied run defender, coverage guy, and pass rusher in the draft. Will make a good strong-side compliment to TBC.

44. Demaryius Thomas - a terrifying downfield threat amazing size/speed and unmatched aggression in going up after the ball. Raw, but scary-talented. Good run after the catch, too, with his strength and nasty disposition. Perfect #3 to compliment Moss, Edelmen, and Tate.

(This is where things get a little sketchy, given the current rankings. Meh.)

47. Arthur Jones - good developmental 34 DE. Only problem is, in the mid-second, I want more than a developmental guy. Sigh . . .

53. Jimmy Graham - good developmental receiving TE with the size and athleticism to grow into a competent blocker. Again, disappointing to take a project in the second, unless he can step in and become a dirty starter despite his rawness.

Overall, I'm not terribly happy with this draft. I could ignore the board and reach for my favorite guys, but that's not the point of this game, so I'll play along. All the same, I think the Patriots can do better in the real world, even though I'm quite fond of the first two picks.

These rankings seem a little off but what the hell. Are we still doing within 5 of the number? I'll assume so.

22 - Derrick Morgan - if he falls to us he is a must

44 - Arrelious Benn - Boldin with more speed, great #2 WR to go over middle and be occasional deep threat

47 - Ricky Sapp - explosive pass rusher with great upside

53 - Alex Carrington - really love this guy and think he will make a great 5-tech if he bulks up a bit

OG Johnson - powerful OG that can road grade. He absolutely mauled the Texas D Line in the championship game.

Derrick Morgan will be a good NFL player, but he's a bad fit for a 3-4 defense. I know some people think that any 4-3 DE who is tall and not too heavy can play OLB in the 3-4 but from what I've seen Morgan has stiff hips and was underwhelming in the LB drills at the combine

Moot point anyway, as he won't be around at 22, but even if he were, I wouldn't want the Pats to take him.

Perhaps a nitpick, but who do you see sitting there at 22 that Philly would need to jump over Green Bay to get? They have totally different needs (and totally different defensive schemes).

Not nitpicking.. good question

Couple thoughts..

1.Two needs would be if there if one of the top Tackles make it to the Pats
2. If one wants Taylor Mays is considered desirable both have needs for safety's 3. RB Ryan Mathews falls..

I like this it covers four areas of need, they only thing is Sapp when did he become so wart free or have you always thought this highly of him.

I like Hughes but I wouldn't trade up for him. I would sit tight in round 2 for the best available pass rusher, then I'd spend that 3rd round pick on a guy like Ben Tate or Jimmy Graham.

Hughes.. is rising fast.. not sure he even makes it out of the first round
