Assumption 1: Morgan, Odrick and Spiller are off the board at #22 but some other very desirable guys are on the table such as Weatherspoon, Davis, etc.
Assumption 2: Jacksonville wants to draft Tebow badly.
Assumption 3: Cleveland has a guy they highly desire in round 2 that they don't think makes it to round 3.

Round 1 #22: Trade back for an early 2nd and a #1 pick in 2011. Any of the top 10 worst teams would be a suitable candidate. For example, let's say Detroit takes Suh. They still have a hole at LT and nobody to protect Stafford. They see that Anthony Davis is available at #22. I'd certainly take their early 2nd and future 1st. They'd get a franchise LT to protect their QB in addition to getting the best defensive player in the draft!

Round 2 #44: Trade back with Jacksonville for their 3rd round pick and a 2nd rounder in 2011. They get - Tebow!

Round 2 #53: Trade back with Cleveland for their early 3rd and a future 2nd round pick. They get - somebody who would be long gone before the 3rd round started.

Look at how that sets up the Pats drafts:

2010
Round 2.2 #34
Round 2.15 #47
Round 3.7 #71
Round 3.10 #74
Round 4 #116
Round 6 #180
Round 7 #213

2011
1st round pick - from Raiders
1st round pick - from Detroit
1st round pick - Patriots own pick.
2nd round pick - from Jax
2nd round pick - from Cleveland
2nd round pick - Patriots own pick.

That gives you 3 1st round picks in 2011 and 3 2nd round picks in 2011 WITH a Rookie Salary cap in place! Would you do it? I would!

yes i would. Sergio Kindle, Jared Odrick, and Mike Iupati, may all be gone.

Yup, and just think about all the TALENT you could scoop up in the 2011 draft, and hopefully with a rookie cap in place too!

It depends. We do need some pass rush talent now and this class has several that I think that they should try to get.

The 2011 class does not appear, at this time, to be as talented or deep as this years class.

Ideally, would be to get #33 from St. Louis, or #34 from Detroit - then wait for the bidding to start after some of the "slower" teams have processed the draft overnight and decided there is someone who slippped out of round one they absolutely have to have. Greed is good.

AH, no. For you to make the assumption of a rookie cap, then you would have to give that benefit of the doubt to Detroit as well. Do you really think they will give up their first next year(likely top 10 still with their lack of talent)with a rookie cap to move up 12 spots and have to pay another first this year??
Its well known that the depth of this years draft has to do with uncertainty next year, and there are alot of underclassmen that would have otherwise come out next year...so its safe to assume that next years' draft wont be that good. This years 2nds are next years firsts, but they get PAID as seconds! Trading away from the sweet spot in this draft you would have to go UP not down! I do agree that I expect one of the 2s should be traded for a 09 3 and something else, but why not a vet player that could help us this year? With as many rookies as we have had make the team from the last couple years into next year we need more solid vets not more picks.

Teams that trade future firsts usually assume they are going to be in the later half of the round when they are trading for a pick like #22. If I were the Detroit (or any top 10 team) brass I would assume I'm be picking in the top half again next year since you're rebuilding. Therefore I would not give up a top 15 next year and an early 2nd this year. If I were in the Pats position I would take it no problem :)

But as you recall, that's EXACTLY what the Raiders did!
There's a reason why those teams are in the bottom 10, one of those is usually - their FO is NOT VERY GOOD. :)

The 2011 class does not appear, at this time, to be as talented or deep as this years class.

There should be a number of top 3-4 pass rushers that slip to the top or middle of the 2nd round. Rickey Sapp, Jerry Hughes, Greg Hardy, Everson Griffen, Misi, etc.

With 3 1st round picks and 3 2nd round picks, you easily have the ammo to get the CREAM OF THE CROP in 2011. And any picks you don't want to use, you can PAY FORWARD to 2012! :)

Trading down is fine, but for a 2nd and 3rd THIS year.

its kinda like a pyramid scheme.......do it for 5 or 6 years, and you could well wind up with every pick in the 3rd round

I mean just look at this 2011 mock.
With those kinds of picks you can easily get two top 10 players and trade up to the mid teens for a third stud:

How does this 1st round look?

1A. Mark Ingram RB or Greg Romeus DE/OLB
1B. Michael Floyd WR or Patrick Peterson CB
1C. Jared Crick DT or Cameron Heyward DE

And that's not even counting the 2nd round picks yet!

While yes, this looks great in theory, if you look at the trades where we got the Titans and Jaguars picks this year, we didn't get a good 3rd round pick and a future 2nd in return, just a 2nd. Not saying it is impossible, but just not as likely as it used to be.

I think that is why they did it for a 2011 1st instead of 2010 assuming the team would get better each year. He must not of been confident in the team's chances to make the playoffs in 2009.

2011 looks like a great draft to have extra 1st round picks. Especially at the WR position.

Well there is some precedent.

In 2003 For example when we suckered the Ravens by giving up our 1st round pick for their 2nd and 1st so they could draft Kyle Boller. We used the Raven's 2004 1st to draft Vince Wilfork.

In 2007, we traded #28 to San Fran for a 4th that year and their 1st next year (#7 overall). We used San Fran's #1 to draft Jerod Mayo.

Anyways if we traded with Detroit. I think it would turn into a top 10 lock, maybe even top 5 1st rounder in 2011.

2011 looks like a great draft to have extra 1st round picks. Especially at the WR position.

We will be needing a replacement for Moss. He won't last forever.

Until we resigned Bodden, I wanted Patrick Peterson with the Raiders' pick. Now I don't think the secondary is much of a concern. The young guys show a lot of promise, and we have good stability at the position.

WR, on the other hand, could use some help after Moss departs next year. I'm a big fan of Baldwin, who reminds me of Vincent Jackson or a bigger Larry Fitzgerald. Has Moss-like leaping ability, with absolute fearlessness to lay out and snag a pass. Check out these highlights from the game against Notre Dame: YouTube - Pitt's WR Jonathan Baldwin highlights vs Notre Dame

My favorite target next year, however, is Robert Quinn, the DE from UNC who overcame a brain tumor in high school to become one of the best pass rushers in the nation. He's a great kid who visits other student-athletes with health issues and encourages them. Also, he was a two-time heavyweight wrestling champion, so he really understands leverage and body control. Fantastic athlete and absolute terror off the edge. Check out this mini documentary--make sure to watch both parts. YouTube - UNC Football's Robert Quinn Overcomes Brain Tumor part 1

Oh, and to see him actually rush the passer: YouTube - North Carolina Tar Heels Football Front Seven 2009 He's #42. I love his speed and flexibility turning the corner, and his relentlessness in pursuit. He's only 19, so he's going to get bigger/faster/stronger/more refined in the next year. He's 6'5 #265 or so, and apparently runs in the 4.5s. I think he's the next great pass-rusher in the NFL, and I'd absolutely love to have him on our team.

Actually, it was because Al Davis didn't want to give up his 2010 2, and offered up his 2011 1 instead.

There are two teams I cannot see BB making a trade with: Cleveland (because of Ratgini), and Minnesota (because of Brad Childress).

OTOH, I don't know what combined effect a possible 2011 rookie cap, a possible work stoppage in 2011, and the deep draft class this year will have on trades. We could see tons of them, or we might see relatively few (as teams might generally be willing to hang on to whatever picks they have).

Trading down is fine, but for a 2nd and 3rd THIS year.

I agree. Bill did something similar, in reverse, in 2002 in order to draft Grahambo: he traded his 1st + his 3rd to the Skins for their higher 1st.

There is a lot of depth at our 2 positions of greatest need: OLB & WR; I wouldn't mind seeing Bill trade down in order to acquire a 3rd-rounder this year, then draft C/G Maurkice Pouncey with the (now lower) 1st, then draft at least one each of OLB & WR with 2 of our next 4 picks (3 2nds & 1 3rd).
