I'll share something I've been considering the last two weeks, and it's making more sense to me. Many of us harbor dreams of McClain falling to 22, or even close enough to make a trade-up worthwhile. Others are happy waiting for Spikes with our second round picks. Others think our ILB corps is just fine as currently constituted. I myself have been banging the AJ Edds drum for a while.

However, there's another guy out there whom I'm developing a mild crush on, a heck of a football player, that at first glance doesn't appear to fit into our system.

DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim out of Washington. Maybe the reason nobody talks about him is because nobody knows how to pronounce or write his name. Watching him play, he's always around the ball...a guy whose motor actually matches his talent. He's at 6-3, 267, quick, explosive, and strong. It's a positional change for sure, but with some coaching, he might be the prototype for the strongside ILB in Belichicks defense. I don't know where he's projected right now, probably late 2nd to mid third, but if Belichick's m.o. is to draft big, strong, fast, smart, football players, then this could be his guy with the last 2nd rounder.

Any thoughts?

Re: Inside LB alternative

I have a gut feeling Belichick will be sticking with Mayo, Guyton and McKenzie.

Regarding the others, when reading Lindy's magazine (info from NFL Draft Scout) he did appeal to me but they had him going a good bit lower than you suggested, more like the 5th-6th round.

So you see Edds as an ILB ? I was thinking of him outside, he appealed to me as a guy we could get later than the other hot names but his bench at the combine was really bad. We already have one of those in Guyton.

I can see Edds play either the OLB or ILB position. I think his best role, though, would be the Roman Phifer role, coming in on third downs as a coverage linebacker, and maybe gets a surprise blitz or two. I guess you could say that's Guyton's best role as well, but as long as Guyton's a starter, I'd rather let someone else come in on 3rd down to keep him fresh. I also think Edds could adequately back up either ILB position in case of injury.

that's leaving the team pretty high and dry in terms of coverage play-making....none of these guys have the instinct to be very good in coverage

Re: Inside LB alternative

Position change from DE to ILB will take time. Bru did but but took a few years to develop.

I really do see him getting enough snaps to develop
Mayo/Guyton will be the starting ILB ,McKenzie will be rotated in .Now this just for 2 down packages . You will see more Mckenzie as he develops.

In 3rd down Guyton is your Nickle LB as he is faster and good in coverage. He very atheletic and the only guy who i remember having some success again leon washington.
in certain downs you will pull Mayo or Guyton out for a Bigger Safety to cover TE.

As we are set on the top of the lineup i will even use alexander/udfa/late pick as the Spl team and backup option now.

With other needs i do not think you need to a ILB right now.Add 1 more guy late pick who can play spl teams for now and get some snaps in rotation.
the 4th ILB spot is not such a big need.

Sounds suspiciously like Dan Klecko, who I really liked and was disappointed when he didn't work out. A flyer in the fourth would be fine with me.

Re: Inside LB alternative

I would never pick a guy in the 2nd round with the idea of converting him from DE to ILB. The conversion is too difficult, time frame too long, and risk too high. On the other hand, if he could play OLB - which seems like an easier conversion - that might be an option.

With regard to the LB position in general, I'd love to get Edds on day 3 for depth and to compete with McKenzie. But the reality is that this team is going to sink or swim with Mayo. And if he doesn't improve this year, neither will our ILB play.

there are some who show things during their college careers that give you reason to believe they can pick it up pretty quick......

OK, the more I watch and read, the more I'm catching your fever on this one.

He has a stocky fullback build and uninspiring 40 time, but he seems to move sideline to sideline like a linebacker. He's strong with his hands shedding blocks. By all accounts he has the work ethic, leadership, intelligence and fire you want in an ILB. And his agility numbers are really impressive for a 263-lb guy -- his shuttle, cone and vertical all compare favorably with the safeties on the Pats roster.

I'm officially intrigued.

Re: Inside LB alternative

Interesting. Those are the kind of guys we need, definitely.

2nd rounder seem pretty high though, I don't know. He's listed on cbssports at 207 and gbnreport at about that. Not that that means a huge amount. That's about end of 6th round.

Anyway, great find.:)

I believe those rankings came before the combine, when he was simply an undersized DE prospect. Pro-day reports say scouts asked him to do linebacker drills and he impressed and is rising fast.

I didn't know that and am somewhat saddened to read that.

It's a mixed bag, I think. Every account of the Washington pro day has slightly different tidbits. Only NFLDraftScout mentioned the LB drills: "Te’o-Nesheim was tested as a pass rusher, but also in the linebacker drills. One scout said that he thought his speed and pass-rush ability might make him a real candidate to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense." Meanwhile Walterfootball said he'd bulked up from 250 to 263 for the pre-draft events. Very interesting if all the film actually shows him at 250, he seemed to have plenty of power on the field.

Question: why is nobody here talking about him at OLB? Or to put it another way, what did Larry English have that Te'o-Nesheim doesn't? English's big claim to fame was 31.5 career sacs in the MAC; Te'o put up 30 in the Pac-10. And he bests English in every single measurable: taller, heavier, faster, quicker, stronger, more explosive.

Re: Inside LB alternative

Why wouldn't we put him at OLB? He had almost 20 sacks over the last 2 years and has all the measurables. Here's some more interesting stuff about his pro day:

Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, Washington, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

"03/10/2010 - While Butler may have solidified his reputation as one of more unheralded inside linebackers of this class, the player who helped himself the most was clearly pass rusher Daniel Te'o-Nesheim.... "

Re: Inside LB alternative

He was a late round prospect prior to the combine and his pro day and now could go in the mid rounds. But second/third round seems a bit too high.

Re: Inside LB alternative

If McKenzie is healthy, I expect that you're right. However, taking an ILB in the 4th or so would be provide insurance and another prospect.

No love for Stevenson Sylvester?

Really impressed me at the Combine. Has the size, the smarts, the production.
