Jared Odrick .. whatcha think?

I like him. If the Pats stay pat at 22, I say he is the pick. I think the DE spot is the biggest need in this draft. Why get a pass rushing OLB if you dont have the guy infront of him to occupy the blockers. Plus we need to get better against the run. My only thought is if there is a guy who starts to slip closer to us, is it worth trading up from #22, which means passing on Odrick, to get a certain player. Like say if Derrick Morgan begins to fall. Then we would need to address the DE position in the 2nd round. Maybe a guy like Arthur Jones from Syracuse. Been reading up alot on him lately, he looks like he could be a nice pick up.

Exactly my thoughts. If one of the OLB/DE pass rushers that they really like drops to 22 (Dunlap, Morgan, Pierre-Paul, etc.) then that is the pick otherwise Odrick looks pretty solid.

Ditto, personally if Dunlap checks out off the field and in interviews then I'd take him over Odrick. But, I would be very very pleased with Odrick as the pick at 22. Our dline would pretty much be set, and looking very good. If we do take Odrick we'd better take at least one outside backer in the second round (Austen Lane please).

If the Pats go defense in the first round, I'm crushing on Odrick and Morgan. Lately, I've realized that I'm "Odrick or Bust". McClain wouldn't even fill the order for me anymore.

I agree.. I could see the Pats taking a very pro-active approach in the draft and targeting guys who they want.. and maybe only using 3 of the 4 picks but getting a combo like..

Odrick / Hughes / Spikes

Assuming we can't/don't want to trade #22, my thought now is to draft Odrick and then trade up to early second for Jerry Hughes.

I have a difficult time getting all the Odrick love. I mean, he's a great player . . . at 3-tech. He's explosive getting into the backfield, and has an awesome motor, but he can be washed out in the run game, and too easily gets turned in the hole. That worries me, a bit. I honestly don't see what he offers that Wright doesn't in our current defense. If we're taking him at 22, I want an upgrade from what we have already. Otherwise, I want to move in a different direction.

Disclaimer: if we play more 43 next year, Odrick becomes an excellent pick. I do like his aggressiveness.

Find me one guy in this draft that you cannot say gets washed out in the run game once in awhile. Also, there just are not that many guys who you can go to the tape of in college and see him play the 5 technique week in and week out. He is smart, athletic, strong, and in time will be an anchor on that left side. What I like about him too is that he has some pass rush skills that the front 3 lacked last year with Seymour gone. I am not calling him Seymour, but no one thought Seymour was Seymour when he was drafted either. If he is someone between Seymour and Warren, I will take it.

Dunlap flamed out at the combine with interviews and flexibility.

I think most feel as though Odrick would be an improvement over Wright (at least in the long term). If the front office doesn't believe so, then there is definitely no reason to take him at 22.

I love that thinking as well!

I think your discounting his ability and comparing him to Wright.. my .02 .. I think he projects more towards a Seymour type..

Odrick could rise the way Ty Warren did.

Odrick would be a solid though unspectacular choice.

If Odrick is not suited to play the 5-tech, who is it? Personally I don't see many high rated prospects who could do it. There are two tall college defensive ends in Corey Wootton and Alex Carrington that have the preferred height and seem to be stout against the run, but do they have the technique and can they add enough weight?

There is Tyson Alulu who played in a three-man front at Cal, but he's a bit on the short side (measured in at 6-2 3/8) and looks better suited to play the 3-tech. Lamarr Houston is also shorter than ideal and probably best suited as a 3-tech.

So who would be the choice?

He seems like the consensus choice in round one, so we can pretty much scratch him off the list as a future Patriot. lol With pro days and personal workouts ongoing a lot can change from now til draft day.

Might have to reach for someone like Geathers or Deaderick later.

I'd much rather see them "reach" for Odrick in round one. :D

I would much rather see BB trade up and take Suh. Suh is a much better player than Odrick and there is little to no chance he gets washed out on any running play.
