OT: Question about Comcast deal with NFLN

I pay something like $10/month to get NFLN; Comcast tells me the sports package is still required to get it. I thought a deal was struck a while back between the NFL and Comcast to make NFLN part of its basic cable offering, without customers having to pay a premium. Of course, the other channels on this bogus "sports package" are useless. What gives? Anyone know?

Kinda like the Digital Conversion.. They are going to make it where every tv in your house has to have their equipment.. So right now if you have a HD Digital TV without a box that is receiving HD channels, you'll lose it because you'll have to put their adapter on unless you pay extra for a HD BOX..

Once I move, i'll be done with with them.. Good Product but to much $$$..

Have you looked into DirecTV? It may be cheaper in the long run and IIRc NFLN is part of the basic package.

I was under the impression that the thing you had to pay for was the Red Zone channel. I never bothered to really look into it though.

Regardless, I am moving to Tampa in July and will be done with Comcast.

I thought under the agreement last year between Comcast and the NFL, the NFLN was free on the digital package. I moved to DirecTV last year so I don't know personally, but I could have sworn that was part of the agreement.

Direct tv sucks
No red zone channel unless you buy complete nfl pkg which cost over $300.00
On demand is a joke no nfl high lites unless you buy complete pkg. I HAD comcast
and switched to direct worst mistake ever made for tv. If your a hockey fan
forget it no versus channel.H D BOX cost $199.00 each .

What they did was copy it out of the Sports Package and put it into the Digital Preferred package. This is useless since the DP package cost MORE then the sports package. So all this media attention, and it's not even helping out the customer at all. If anything comcast is set to steal *ahem* make more money in the deal.

Really? That doesn't make any sense. The only point of the cable digital conversion (2011?) is to have either digital TVs or digital adapters in every home. Not both. Comcast shouldn't make you buy a digital adapter if your TV already has a digital tuner.

You would think but Comcast wants you to have their equipment and sell the point u need their equipment because it will give you additional channels in the future.. SO just a heads up, unles you get one of their boxes, you will lose channels..

I actually have FiOS. Very good service - a notch below DirecTV because of Sunday Ticket though.

The link to the story is below, but like most things comcast good luck deciphering what it means or what their services really cost. All I know is it used to cost me $19/mo to get NFLN because I had to buy into a tier in which I could even pay extra for it. Now the basic digital tier allows me to buy the package it is in for $7.95/mo...

But at the end of the day I'm in a bundled service where I get my $29.99 phone and $45 internet along with TV for ONLY $150... And that is only after I called to complain that my bill had crept up to $181 somehow over the last year...

Sadly I'm in an apartment with no FIOS availability or access to Direct TV or even crummy RCN...

The deal was struck to copy NFLN to Digital Preferred. It's Comcast's most popular Digital package. It sounds like you've got something called Digital Starter, which would not include NFL Network.

Except, as I said, 65-70% of Comcast customers are already getting Digital Preferred, and only about 15% of Comcast customers subscribe to the Sports Pack.

FWIW, I believe the reason for this is that Comcast is required by their programmers to encript their digital signals to prevent theft of service.

The only HD channels you can receive with a digital tuner but without a set-top box are the local channels (NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS), and that I believe it required by law. Comcast or other cable companies can only encrypt non-broadcast channels in HD.

Exactly. The local HD channels have "Must Carry" status. The original post can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he was talking about the HD "cable" channels without a Digital Tuner.

If anyone from Comcast says they're not going to carry local HD channels unless you have equipment, they don't know what they're talking about.

Here's the issue I have with Comcast or and all Cable companies.. I used to have 1 digital box with HD. I have a second HD tv which received the HD signal from Comcast, so I got local HD, without having the second box. The only difference between the two is the tv with the digital box, I received the 200 and up channels..

Now since the Digital Switch, Comcast will be or is pushing their equipment saying "you'll need it because in the future we're going to offer you more channels".. Hello, the customer will have to pay for that..

BOTTM LINE: My problem is since the "upgrade" i've actually lost channels because now I have to have a box on the 2nd tv that now doesn't provide me HD. But if I want what I had before I have to pay for it ($6.95).. So to keep what I have, I'm paying more.. Sound fair? I dont' think so..

This is why I'll be switching to another NON Cable company provider..

No, you don't have to have a $6.95 box on that 2nd TV. You can certainly take them up on their offer of a free Digital Adapter and buy an A/B Switch so you can continue to watch HD local channels.
