I apologize if there is already a thread for this, but what is the current status for Brandon McGowan. I know he started off really well and then kind of faded, but wouldn't it be smart to sign him again as added depth with Chung, Merriweather, Sanders, and McGowan rounding out the safeties? Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't McGowan only signed to a 1-year deal or was there something I missed? Thanks in advance.

He got a 2-year deal.

My bad. I should've read the thread on our secondary before I started this thread. Thanks for the reply. It's been a really long morning for some reason.:(

He's signed cheap through this coming year. Sanders is more expensive and is signed through 2011 as is Meriweather.

Given McGowan's disappearing act in the second half of last year and with Chung presumably in line for more snaps, I doubt we'll see McGowan playing too much on defense barring injuries.

Also FYI Miguel's page shows status info and more

I agree, but he does give some valued depth at that position. Something the Pats haven't had there for a while. Hopefully, they can concentrate on ball-catchers and pass-rushers in the draft.

I can see all the safeties getting some playing time, especially since we'll have a shortage of linebackers who can both play and find the stadium without a roadmap.

No one can convince me that McG isn't better than Sanders

He is more talented, but Sanders is more responsible and attentive to details. Sanders, while a solid and unspectacular player, also does not miss assignments like McGowan does.

Three years in the system versus one year. We all know BB has a difficult system to pick up. I believe this was Merriweathers' job and he was actually the one who could not make the correct calls. Do you pull Merriweather or McGowan? Everyone assumes it was McGowns' job and he failed. He finished I believe fourth on the 2009 Pats in tackles and was leading the Team in tackles (how many knew this?) when he was pulled for Sanders.

Sanders is a $3m a year contract. He will not be a starter the whole season.
If he has trade value, go for it. McGowan will not bring a ransom even though he is more skilled.

I do think that Chung will start over those two by seasons end anyway.

I beg to differ on Sanders and his abilities. But then again, my distrust for him as a football player (not husband, father or human being) is well documented.
