Filthy Four - version 1 - March 6, 2010

I am going to fire off four picks, rapid fire style until the draft.

Shooting from the hip

#22 - Jerry Hughes - DE Texas Christian
- adds a situational pass rusher to the defense
- will have to improve run defense but plays all sub packages in year 1
- thought process, obvious need might as well take the player they like at 22

#44 - Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
- adds quality depth and is a potential starter in year 1
- thought process, you can never have enough linebackers in a 3-4, Spikes has versatility (can play some OLB) and also has blitzing experience

#47 - Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
- adds a good (not great player) to the secondary
- thought process, this pick may change if Bodden is signed but somehow the Patriots must start playing better CBs than Whilhite

#53 - Ryan Mathews - RB Fresno State, Junior
- added to the rotation in year 1, bye bye BJGE or even Maroney
- potential to be number 1 type back in year 2 if he can learn blitz pickup

Damn this is hard, I still see holes at LDE and TE but maybe we can strike gold in rounds 4-7.

I think WR is a Bigger need and would like to see us take one @ 47.
Your other 3 picks are fine.

I like Hughes at #42 and not #22. If we could walk away with Graham, Kindle, or Sapp at #22 and come back with Hughes at #42 I think that would be a steal. I agree that WR is a higher need at #42 or #47, Bodden is the wild card here for drafting at #47. I worry about taking another young cb who will have to play. Wilhite & Wheatley still don't impress me, so having a proven veteran on the other side of Butler is key.

Benn, or Gresham (if a move for Olsen is not made) could be players to look at with #47. We'd have to get VERY lucky to have either fall that far but you never know.

I just can't see Coach Belichick using a first round pick on an OLB who does not have his desired measurables.

I have heard that Kareem Jackson and Ryan Mathews might be round 1 guys after the combine.

I heard on the Kiper/McShay podcast that some scounts believe that Spikes will try to find a way not run at his pro day and that someone might have to draft him with verified 40 time.

I like Hughes, Jackson, and Spikes as players, but am unsure about Mathews. Good work, and I like the filthy four title. I am still hoping the Patriots find a way to fill a need prior to the draft, but there's very few players left in free agency that will do so.

#1 - DE Odrick

Big enough (305 lb) to play end and has ideal height (6'5"). Only lacking experience and technique refinement. Not Seymour, but that shouldn't be the standard. Bonus is that it allows Wright and Pryor to stay in the roles where they have had success.

#2 - OLB Hughes

Adding to your thoughts...he looked awesome moving backwards and laterally at the combine.

#3 - LB Misi

Only if he has the football IQ to handle many different assignments. Great energy and showed the ability to cover in the middle of the field. Perfect fit in the "wandering LB" scheme on passing downs (is he rushing? dropping? is he inside? outside?)...again, only if he has "it" between his ears.

#4 - TE Pitta

If you are going to start over at TE, why not get a guy that has a little Dallas Clark in him. Got the moves to separate quickly (haven't had that in a TE since Coates) and has big, reliable hands to stay out of the Brady doghouse.

Didn't put draft positions since the Pats always move around. #44 is probably too late for Hughes and #53 is probably too early for Pitta, but move around a little and it works out. RBs are always available late and there are a lot of serviceable CBs in the middle rounds (I like Jerome Murphy from USF). I didn't get a guard but with Neal back, Connolly with some experience and the rooks from last year, the Pats seem to be OK.

I like that draft too but it is very heavy on OLB/DEs. 3 of the 4 slots, seems like a lot. Sapp seems like to odd guy out, Graham plays on the left side, Griffen becomes to new Jarvis Green (brought in for pass rushing situations).

TEs - I consider them dime a dozen, get a TE off the street and a late round draft pick, an undrafted player for camp fodder and they are all set.

3-4 DE - Is a very high need, I could see a second rounder being traded for a player like Marcus Spears or Kedric Golston.

WR - I almost took Golden Tate at 22, this is a tough one. Really not sure what they will do.

I will try a few more times, see what sticks.

I prefer to address Moss's replacement this year with 2-3 signees/draftees and a healthy Tate. Beside, Oakland's pick alone should be sufficient to get one of Jones/Green/Floyd/Baldwin. I don't like projecting a draft 14 months out much either.

Spikes problem is he takes bad angles and is slow. In the NFL RB's will blow right by him on stretch plays. (IE: See Merriweather in the first play of the Baltimore playoff game. Bad angles means TD for opposition.)

PS: The difference between Merriweather and Spikes is that Merriweather takes bad angles once in a blue moon,or when Wilfork is being blown off the LOS faster than a bowling ball going downhill. Spikes does it on almost every stretch play. Painful to watch really.

PSS: Don't care that people think Spikes had an injury last season. Injuries don't set your angles only how fast you get there.

I agree, leave 2011 1st rounders alone. They represent huge value in a shallow draft pool. Big WR year in 2011 and Peterson, depending on how he runs,could be huge as well.

This WR draft class seems very deep. I'd love to take three (say a 2nd, a 4/5, and a 7th) and see how they develop along with Tate, before commtting myself to using both my #1 picks next year to get a top WR in the 2011 draft.

I also have no faith in projections on sophmore WR's 14 months out.

If Tate and the draftees don't pan out, then you still have the Raider's #1 which should be top 10. If these four guys are as good as you say, The Raider's number one should be able to nab one. Our 2011 #1 should have more value in the 40s this year, based on the reported depths of the two classes.

Two things:

1.) You are right about projecting out 14 months. But only because of the potential for serious injury, other than that these 4 WR's are locks if they run well.

2.) As for trading our #1 from 2011. It is possible that if the absolute right player is available in the late 30's or early 40's BB might be tempted, however, I can't see a three down player surviving past the 3-4 teams littered from #23 to 40 something, and there is NO WAY BB spends his 2011 1st on a 2010 2nd round projection.
