Pats still in the mix for Jarvis Green - Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Green's agent, Albert Elias, has been fielding calls over the weekend and Green is anticipating making his first visits at the start of the week. Elias declined to name the teams with which he is speaking at this time, but he did acknowledge that the Patriots are one of them.

Market's heating up for Jarvis Green: Set to start visiting teams Monday, Patriots remain in the mix.

Surprising. Even Reiss thinks so:

Had previously thought Patriots and Green might part ways. Now thinking there is more of a chance that he could return. Market will dictate.

Even as of 1:35 AM on Friday Reiss said Jarvis was likely on his way out:

.........why keep him, he'll be overpriced.

More from Elias:

Elias said that he was in no rush to have Green visit a team this weekend, because he believes there is no player like Green on the open market. Elias believes Green's value as a nickel rusher in the 3-4 is unique.

"We believe that is a niche that is hard to find, and the numbers prove it. In the years '04-'07 when he was used in that role, he had 20 sacks at 48 percent playtime," Elias said.

"We wanted to wait and talk to teams about how they would use him. While financial terms will be important, how he will be utilized is also a big consideration."

This is probably true. On the same token, this means that Green isn't the ideal fit as a starting 3-4 DE. So even if the Pats re-sign Green, they will still likely be looking for a first down 3-4 DE, a Haloti Ngata type. Maybe Jared Odrick?

If they rely on Wright or Green to fit that bill, they risk another Baltimore debacle.

If there's one guy I went into the offseason hoping they would part ways with, it was him. They need to get some new bodies on the D-line.

Same. Not want.

I just sincerely hope this means that he's going to be a back up and that the team is thoroughly going to search for an actual replacement for Richard Seymour this offseason. God knows that Jarvis Green was not that guy in 2009.

I can see Green coming back because i don't see him starting on any team

His agent can use from 04-07 all he wants. Fact is in 08 and 09, Jarvis has 2 sacks and 36 hits/pressures in over 600 pass rushes. That is not very good Plus he has always wore down vs the run. If he was above average run defender, the Pats would be making a bigger push to keep him.

He had some nice years here, but the team needs more production from his spot. Time to move on.

Good luck elsewhere, Mr. Green. You've been a nice guy, and you were a nice backup for several seasons.

Jarvis Green is not worth TBC money. If we're talking just slightly over vet min, I'd entertain it, otherwise, I'd much rather that the Pats draft a new DE in 2010.

For a million or two per season, I don't think we'd find better depth/utility at DE. I agree though, that if he's brought back at more than $3m or to be a starter, and it's an inadvisable move.

After the disaster of the Seymour trade, I would expect the team to check every nook and cranny for a serviceable starting DE for this season, and to draft a DE very high in this draft. If that's the case, I would think that there will be no room for Green, particularly if the reports of the team wanting to bring back Smith are accurate.

Green is like Tomlinson...They both were VERY good players and perhaps Green at one time was the best backup DE in the league but just like LaDanian the bottom dropped out...quickly.

I expect Green to be called upon by the Saints who are his dream team to close out his career, and it would be nice for a nice guy to go out on a team he wants to be on.

Yeah, I suppose the numbers game doesn't work in his favor:

Starters:
Warren
Wilfork
FA/Draftee (hopefully)

Reserves:
Wright
Brace
Pryor

i heard that he wants to go to his hometown team of New Orleans. With the saints cutting Charles Grant, they could use some help on the d-line. Damn, that's Seymour, Thomas and Green cut or traded in the past year. It's funny how they were the three who were about to sack Eli Manning....

Jarvis Green and Le Kevin Smith............My god......our pass rush would be unstoppable.......
