So, I get ESPN The Rag.. errr.. Mag.. And was reading their NFL blurb. This past issue they had Aaron Schatz from Football Outsiders commenting on 4 teams (Pats, Jets, Jags, 49ers) Most of what he said was sound in that the Pats need another receiver more than a running back. And he was doing so well until he said "rest assured Pats fans, Special Teams Ace Sam Aiken will be back returning kicks and punts."

HUH??? Since when did Aiken do kick return and punt return duty? Aiken hasn't ever had those duties with the Pats.

Schatz and Football Outsiders is supposed to reputable. But if they don't even know that Aiken hasn't ever returned a kick or punt for the Pats, then they lose credibility..

Schatz is a Pats fan too. Not sure what's up with that. I get the Magazine as I pay for ESPN's Insider stuff because there is a ton there (although you have to look for the information not the rumors as is seen here with silly rumor headlines all the time) but I don't open the Magazine, I hate the format. To the trash with you.

I don't see it thAt much of a big deal, he was just trying to make hisaiken comment more effective

So, you don't have an issue with him being factually wrong?

As I said, it takes away from his credibility by stating the incorrect information.

I would have thought our biggest need was a defense.

I agree with you. That's a major error. I've never even read or heard about Aiken doing that in practice as an emergency option. He strikes me as a little too tall and rangy for that type of duty.

It should have read " covering kicks and punt returns." ESPN doesn't let facts get in the way of a good story but it attacks his credibility with gaffes like that.. If he has covered the PAts it's even worse.

Yeesh, obviously he intended to assure fans that Aiken would be relegated to ST and he (or someone at ESPN the Mag) swapped returning for covering. I don't put a ton of stock in the metrics guys, I think they track what happened to some extent but seldom why or what it means going forward in this game, but evisceration for this kind of editing error is silly.

If he claimed to have some ****amamie data that supported Aiken finally having a breakout season as a WR, then off with his head...

Saw that, too, and double-took. Schatz is, generally speaking, VERY good. I like his stuff, he's knowledgeable AND he's a Patriots fan. You'd think he'd get it. It made me think some editor got ahold of his blurb and changed a few items around.

This makes me so furious, I can not care.
