ESPN rumor/speculation about Greg Olsen to potentially New England

According to ESPN's rumors page, they predict the Bears will trade Greg Olsen because he doesn't fit Martz's system and point out several roster moves to s. Two teams are listed as potential trade partners - the Pats and the Bengals. Belichick and Jerry Angelo are good friends. The Pats need a TE and Olsen is a good receiving TE.

It is all speculation at this point, but Olsen would be an upgrade to Watson and younger.

No, he is still operating under his rookie deal.

Though the Pats have a good relationship and have made trades with Chicago before, I question the fit. Olsen isn't a strong blocker, and the Pats seem to demand that from their TE. With all the spread sets they run, the Pats seem to feature WR over the TE position.

Well, that would certainly eliminate the TE position as a need. Olsen would look pretty good wearing a Flying Elvis on his helmet.

You can't sit out free agency just because you got your own players to sign. TE is a need since the Pats have no TE on the roster other than Chris Baker. No reason to scrap the 2010 season just to wait for Vince and Tom to resign. I say improve the team and continue to try to retain players. The Pats know about how much they have to spend and about how much it is going to cost to retain Vince and Tom. They don't have to wait to make moves.

As for focusing on the defense, I agree it is the biggest priority, but not the only priority.

As for Olsen, he was drafted in 2007. I doubt he has a new deal since he just played his third year in the league. Besides, if he has a new deal, the Bears eat all the bonuses already played.

As of right now, there isn't a trade offer on the table. It's only a rumor. However, if the Bears are looking to trade Olsen they will probably start out high (a low first rounder to jump back into the draft). I can't see any team paying that, though, which means that they'll probably get a second out of him. I would happily give up one of our seconds for him if that were the case. We'd probably have to throw in a day two pick as well.

Not sure what kind of comp. da berz are looking for but he'd be a nice weapon for TB until WW gets back. Even then he'd be a nice threat.

Same here. I would suspect that Olsen is not that bad of a blocker, but I really can't sit here and say that I know for sure with a serious face. Maybe some (poor bastard) UM fan or someone who lives in the Bears market can enlighten us?

Daniel Graham was a great blocking TE here, but he was by no means a "stud". Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten are, by definition, "studs". On a side note, I've always had a feeling that you were into studs, Hark.

Exactly, not every TE on the roster has to be a really good blocker. Olsen does not have Watsons straight line speed but he is an excellent route runner and has sure hands and has a big 6'5 frame. I think those attributes are more important that Watsons straight line speed and good blocking skills.

It is tough to tell what kind of a blocker he is with the Bears since their entire o-line sucks. As a TE he might have taken on a lot of blocks he shouldn't have since defenders too easily shed blocks against the o-linemen. Orlando Pace especially struggled this year and I suspect Olsen lined up against him a lot.

I'd rather use the pick to be wasted on olsen on a TE like gronkowski or jimmy graham
