Would you trade Maroney to Washington?

Think about it, Mike Shanahan is the new coach there. He's always liked Maroney. Portis is an injury prone RB. It makes sense for both teams. I don't know what value we could get out of the trade, but Washington could be a possible destination if we could work out a deal.

No. I wouldn't trade Maroney to anyone unless I knew I already had a better option in place. And for health and age reasons I don't. He is the best bet here as the primary back in a two back system where the backs have to block or they won't see the field and where Fred is depth if you're lucky and Morris isn't getting any younger.

maroney has been the pats leading rusher for two of the last 3 years and the only reason he did not lead them in 08 is cause he got hurt.

fred taylor is not a starter or a good back up any more. so even if they do draft a RB i still want maroney on this team.

I thought Taylor did a damn good job in the few games he was healthy for last year. He was a man possessed in the BUF opener. Given his health will be a concern (and has been a concern) for the remaining couple years of his career, but I think you have to keep him around. Would also be a good mentor for a Joique Bell, or Ben Tate if the Pats go that route in the draft. I think there will be a couple good options in the 3rd/4th rounds this year.

LoMo is a Patriot and a good one too.

The Eagles might be a good landing place for him. I have no idea what some can see in LoMo. He is a nice kid and a less than 4 YPC mediocre back who has struggled here to the point of healthy scratches. Are we looking at the same guy? He is also on the last year of his option and has developed "fumblitis".I see an option to get a fit for our sytem in Chris Gocong. We need a OLB pass rush Vrabel type and the Eagles need another back to spell McCoy.
I would say try and trade him for a pick but I can't see more than a fifth rounder for this former fisrt round pick unfortunately.

Moving Chris Gocong to SAM linebacker seemed like such a great idea four years ago, but the experiment clearly hasn't gone as the Eagles hoped. Gocong lost his starting job in 2009 and did not emerge until he played a really strong game in the playoffs against Dallas. Now what?

Well, Gocong is a very good football player. He is terrific on special teams. He plays good downhill football from the line of scrimmage. But he is a linebacker?

In a perfect world, Gocong would love to stay here and be a starting linebacker. But, well, this is the NFL, and there isn't a player more in flux than Gocong. If he were an unrestricted free agent, Gocong could consider options from teams that play a 3-4 scheme and become a full-time edge rusher. But as a restricted free agent, Gocong's next step is uncertain.

I would keep Maroney ... his production based on his salary is good.

I would make him make a huge commitment to blocking better next year. If he could become at least an average blocker he would help our offense because he would then be a real 3 down back.

Also ... perhaps he also improves with the receiving. He doesn't have to put up huge numbers ... 60 - 70 yards running and 3 to 4 passes would be very decent from him per game.

I think that's a television view of him. Last year he showed many signs of being a new leader for this team. He's still young and his production vs salary is very useful to the team. He's not going to be a #1 RB in this offense ... but if healthy he can be a very good #2 on the field and also a vocal leader.
He's not selfish and accepts his role here.

Wanting to keep someone based on production and salary is very different than saying he is the "franchise" or "if we trade him, we are DOOMED at rb".

LoL, Shanahan may have LIKED Maroney coming out of college but now he's seen ( like all of us have) what an injury prone bust he is. He might take him if he could get him for like a 4th round pick.

I am not a fan of LMo, i've tried I really have. This trade scenario for Portis wouldn't work in my opinion. However if they're offering a pick, sure why not. If we've seen anything lately it's that a rookie can come into the NFL and be effective immediately. I think we need to cut ties and move on.

I would say Maroney for Gocong but it will cost more than just LoMo.

Of course, if I were an NFL GM I'd be so good that I'd, of course, work a deal that made the Hershell Walker trade look like a crappy deal for the Cowboys in comparison.
