2010 NFL Power Poll: Setting the stage for next season - Sporting News - NFL - Sporting News

This is about as low as I can remember the Patriots being ranked since the 2001 season.

I think it is justified based on where they are today, how they have played the last 2 years, changes in their coaching staff etc.

Do others think this is about right?

Not saying they won't do better just asking if being objective and just looking at the facts if everyone agrees with this.

Last I checked, the Pats have beaten the Jets in the division race the last seven years, despite playing harder schedule every year. But the Jets are nine spots higher?

This is an absurd ranking system.

Dallas #2 because they didn't meltdown? I didn't realize that losing by 30 points is not a meltdown.

Green Bay #3? I agree... they are probably #3 in the NFC North.

How on earth does Pittsburgh get #7 if we are #14? They lost consecutively to Kansas City, Oakland, and Cleveland, and barely outscored their opponents overall last year.

I guess we should be ranked below a team that we beat 59-0.

Top 12 should be

1. New Orleans (sure, they are losing free agents, but that means they also have money to sign other free agents.)
2. Indianapolis (we'll see if they continue pulling off 2-point victories for a full season)
3. Minnesota (assuming Favre comes back, they will dominate and then lose again on a bonehead decision)
4. San Diego (Rivers is the key player, not Merriman, LT or Sproles)
5. Philadelphia (playing with 14th string linebackers last year)
6. Baltimore (winning the AFC or finishing 7-9 wouldn't really shock me)
7. New England (10-6 is a dismal failure?)
8. NY Giants (lots of injuries last season, but I'd say their drafting is third only to Indy and Pittsburgh)
9. Pittsburgh (can't bet against the core of that team)
10. NY Jets (defense, defense, defense... did everyone forget that Sanchez is a turnover machine?)
11. Dallas (always the preseason darlings)
12. Cincinnati (last I checked they swept two of the "juggernauts.")

That is a joke when TFB is your QB. If you put Brady on the Lions, then the Lions would be 14th.

IMO, we are 9th or 10th at the absolute worst. If Brady is himself next year, we are alot higher than that too, unless we lose Wilfork and/or Mankins and Welker can't play by midseason.

I stopped after #2.. The cowboys??? seriously?? This is like reading every year the so called experts saying the Texans will go far.. heheheh.. to funny..

It's no worse than most, and better than some.

It's never too early for the these rankings :D

the patriots are probably about #10.

Linebackers are pretty below average along with the cornerbacks. Safeties and d-line hold their own but I think they are slightly overrated in general.

O-line is pretty average and going downhill fast (Vollmer can only replace 1 of the 3 needed) and they have several average running backs but not one great ball carrier. Brady doesn't have much to work with without Welker out wide, and Moss can't shake the double team without Weker in the lineup.

Thats about #10.

just think, if they put Pats at #5 or 6 or 7, how many of us would be clicking through to their page right now??. Just like how business week sells magazines every year juking college rankings even though nothing has changed.

The Patriots are still a bordeline top ten team, but they are clearly trending in the wrong direction. It think it's going to take a couple of seasons before they are legit contenders again.

We are still a top ten team,

Jets, Falcons, Giants and Titans all ahead of them.. these folks are on crack... even the Steelers are suspect at this stage of the game.

Who cares about what anothers PERSON's poll???

In my poll we are a top 5 team :)

based on the defensive roster, I'm suprised the pats aren't in the 20's

The Patriots are a mediocre team, get used to it feety pajama nation. Bad personnel decisions and cheap, cheap, cheap ownership and bad drafting. You reap what you sow.

I smell a troll.

I'm all for Kraft/Belichick continuing to 'sow' 3 Lombardi's per decade! :D

Feety pajama nation? I bet you're a real killer, dink...

I hope most people here realize that this power ranking is nonesense designed to generate contraversey, and boost sales. Don't feed into it.

Out of sheer curiosity, I looked at what the Sporting News picked for the 2009 Playoffs back in pre-season.

Albert Breer had the Saints in the NFCCC. Impressive.
