Glad to see Leigh is taking charge of his destiny.

Anytime players leave it to their agents to hammer out deals it usually means hes side-stepping any local PR fallout if he walks. I don't blame him one bit for it either. Hes earned the right.

"I did talk to Bill (Belichick), but all the business has to be done through my agent and those guys over there," Bodden told the Sirius guys. "But I feel like it’s too early. Combine’s right around the corner, and that’s where a lot of guys’ talk is – all the GMs, all the coaches."

Later in the interview, Bodden added, "I just let my agent handle (the negotiations). It's just, first and foremost, trying to talk to the Patriots and seeing if we can get something done there."

I hope we find a way to keep him around, but I don't think it is too realistic right now. This is especially true considering how bare the DB FA market is. I have a feeling we will be seeing him in a new uniform next year. Maybe we throw the transition tag on him? Who else would we use that on? vince gets the franchise, mank, and ghost get tendered, who gets the transition tag?

I disagree, almost every player has an agent, and they have agents for a reason. Rarely does a player NOT leave it to his agent to hammer out the deals. The agents give them the higher overview of the contract talks, not lawyer detailed specifics. I'm sure his agent will give him the offers, keep him up to date, try to convince him to get the most money etc... I also believe Bodden when he says first and foremost he wants to try to get a deal done with the Patriots. That doesn't mean he'll accept whatever they offer, or that they will definitely see eye to eye on his worth.

His play was good enough to show he can be a force against the best receivers in the game. I believe him to be a true #1 CB.

Dunno, 5 years, $40M perhaps? We need a quality corner, he knows the system, he's experienced, he's proved he can hold up despite having little help in terms of a pass rush - he's the type of player we need.

I agree with you on Butler. Been huge on this kid since preseason. I think he will be fun to watch next year (especially with some form of a pulse in the pass rush department). Butler/Bodden would be a solid secondary. I have no complaints with the safeties, and they should only improve as they spend more time together. Hopefully there is a little more consistency in the secondary next year (seemed like we played musical dbs for a while in the latter part of the season...) as that will only help them gel.

However, I don't want anything to do with Cromartie. Being able to atleast read your contract (not understand it, but read aloud) without a Billy Maddison-esque stutter (t-t-today junior!) should be a requirement to play defense on this team. It isn't exactly simple, and in the words of Ron White- "You can't fix stupid."

And when Vince (Wilfork) was out or Tiny (Warren) was out, we had young guys, but I think the young guys stepped up and played well, and that just gives them experience going into next year. I think we have a lot of good young players, not just defensive line, but linebackers and the secondary. So it’s just little things here and there and just playing better."

I am looking forward to Bodden/Butler for the foreseeable future. Hopefully they get a deal done.

For those who say that a #1 CB is such a hot commodity because there are only about 5-7 of them (I'm in this camp), then he's clearly a #2. I would like to see the Pats hold on to him at ~$7M per, but given what Samuel got from the Eagles, I have my doubts thta that would be enough to keep him. If someone offers him anywhere near Samuel money (who is horrendously overpaid, IMO, and better than Bodden), then I'm okay with him walking.

Good point/clarification. We should really be more clear with our terms. I consider a #1 to be a player that would be the top starting CB for most teams in the NFL. Bodden should not get top 5 CB money.

Agreed. He's not a #1 guy, but he is good enough to be the top CB on a lot of teams. Domonique Foxworth got 4 years for $28 million, and I'd put Bodden a bit ahead of Foxworth so $7M sounds pretty fair to me.

I didn't think the Pats would have any hope of retaining him, but the more I read about the owners desire to take advantage of no salary floor, the more I think the odds increase of keeping Bodden. He's a real physical corner, and if BB has him jamming more at the line instead of giving receivers a 10-yard cushion (I still can't get over that Broncos game), he'll be more effective.

Given these rankings, and considering the fact that we had, at many times, a lackluster pass rush this season, I think it's pretty compelling evidence in favor of resigning Bodden.

This of course assumes his contract demands are not unreasonable. But a Butler/Bodden secondary is one I think would serve us well next season.
