Patriots Expected to Tender LB Woods

Agreed.

The situation is the same as last year. There is no reason to create an additional hole.

Woods is a special teams guy and career backup, and he's fairly competent in that role. He's not a starter, nor will he ever "develop" into one.

This would guarantee that Mankins will be receiving at least the first-round tender (the second highest).

If they tender Woods at the second-round level, and tendered Mankins at the lowest tender (original round compensation), the CBA says all they can get if they lose Mankins is a second.

This is the way you explained it to me in another thread:

Because that's what the CBA says; if a team both:
(A) Gives a first-round tender to a player who WASN'T a first-round pick, and
(B) Gives an original-round tender to a player who WAS a first-round pick,

then the compensation for (B) automatically drops to a second-round pick.

So based on that explanation, they can still tender Mankins at the low number if they don't offer 1st round tender to anybody else. Offering a 2nd round tender to Woods would then not affect it. Right?

I realized that, yeah, the CBA would allow this.

Nevertheless, if they tender Woods at a second, I can't see any way they're going to tender Mankins or Gostkowski at less than that, as both are worth significantly more to the team than Woods.

I don't want him to be a starter either, but I don't have a problem with him as a back-up. His been in the system for a while now and is familiar with it.

Agreed, he's definitely a capable backup.

Wow, you don't have a problem with him tendered with 2nd round money?

He's a stiff, he has no business being on the roster. It's time to part ways with this guy, he did enough damage in the superbowl to last a lifetime. I'm actually shocked he wasn't released right after that game.

I think I'll trust BB's judgement on that a little bit more than yours, no offense.

Yes. They'd have a tough time justifying a lower $$ tender to Mankins. However, they may not have to justify it. They can just make it and tell Mankins "hey bud, that's the way the CBA works. If you think you can get more $$, go get it". As for Gost, he's a kicker, so the pay scale is different. A 1st round tender is almost as much as a transition tag for a kicker.

Do so at your own peril. When's the last time that The_Riddler lost a game as the head coach of the NEP? That's what I thought: the guy's undefeated.

That sounds like an awful lot of money for a guy who's a decent Special Teamer, but let's face it, he ain't Mosi Tatupu either. And he had a chance to step up on D last year and couldn't.

I was a big fan of his potential coming out in the draft and mentioned his name as UDFAs I'd like to see in a Pats uni. But now, after a few years in the system he's shown himself to be a jag at best, and IMO that's too much for what Woods adds.

I completely agree.

A much-needed WR who is familiar with our offense isn't worth $900K but a useless weakling like Woods is worth a 2nd-round tender? Bill is getting closer to Al Davis Land every year.

No problem at all, I don't drink the KoolAid like a few do around here where everything BB does is perfect. The truth is the truth. The eyes don't lie and my eyes tell me that Pierre Woods isn't worth a bag of used footballs. He has CFL written all over him. Why this guy is worthy of a 2cond round tender is something that will really have to be explained to me by one of the KoolAid guys around here because I just don't see him anywhere near that kind of money.

I can't understand it either

BB should have tendered a guy that has been much better over his years here...Alexander

I start to wonder if Belichick is going through the change of life when he does unexplainable moves like this

Yeah, because the Patriots really want a p***ed off Logan Mankins protecting Brady's blind side. . . .

Well with AD expected to be released the starting OLB's are now Pierre Woods and Rob Ninkovich. Their combined awesomeness will allow the Pats to let Wilfork and Bodden go free and be replaced by 2nd round studs Ron Brace and Terrance Wheatley. Imagine the unholy hell being unleashed with all four future perennial All Pros on the field at the same time. Now if we can only find more ways to get Matthew Slater more involved on both offense and defense we will be so far ahead of the other teams as far talent goes. How would they possibly game plan for this?

Ah, a classic BB KoolAid guy standing tall with his BB rose colored glasses, punch drunk on blue Patriots KoolAid, it never ends.............

Woods is a funny player. we argue more about the player who really even in last year made 1% of the freaking cap lol.

really a active 45 player making 1 % of the cap bother people more than anything. its even more funny that adam stewart has more supporters than this guys considering he never played for the pats. Its more sad that Oscar Lua was more of a fan fav then poor Woods .

sad to say i worry about the starting 22 more than the 41-45 player right now. maybe people here believe that is where the problem is.

He will be paid close to $2 million a year if he is tendered at the 2nd round level, that is starter money.
He is not the starter after been given the chance to be one. 2 mill is too much to pay a glorified ST.

The better he plays, the more money he makes next offseason as a UFA. It's all interlinked and it's all part of the system. I don't think he would take it personally. I do think it would decrease the likelihood of him coming back after next year.

can you list all the starter who make 2 million this year. maybe some do but it might part of a big contract not 1 yr deal. again is your list of problem with pats where does 2 million for woods stand?

Look at it this way.

For a decent ST player, which is really all that I considered Woods to be and no more, no less, you can pay someone 1M less and you can give that 1M to lure a Deion Branch or whomever. In the age of the salary CAP every 1M payout factors into other decisions.

Pierre Woods doesn't belong on a roster.
