I'm figuring that the Pats will trade A. Thomas before the draft.

What will they get for him, a seventh rounder? Yesterdays newspaper? Anything to keep him away from the Jets.

Then figuratively, what is the worst team for A. Thomas,, Detroit, St. Louis, Cleveland, if BB was a mean spirited type of guy?

Re: How low will they go to trade A Thomas??

Send him to Detroit for a 2015 6th

Re: How low will they go to trade A Thomas??

How about to Arizona along with 22 and a 5th for Boldin and 26? Just a thought.

Re: How low will they go to trade A Thomas??

Do not trade to Detroit!!!
remember what they did last year with Kevin Connell, they turned him around and shipped him to the Jets for a higher draft pick.

The Lions played the PATS for suckers with that one

lets not repeat in 2010 with AT

Re: How low will they go to trade A Thomas??

If I were a franchise I wouldn't trade for him at all. A jag OLB with attitude problems...

Re: How low will they go to trade A Thomas??

no one will trade for a 33 year old LB that can't get to the QB any more. look at joey porter. he has 26 sacks in the last two years and still no one wants to trade for him.

and right now Ninkovich, and Crable, are the only OLB's on the roster so they are not going to cut him just yet.

Why would any team won't to trade for him? The Pats benched the guy, so why not wait until he gets cut and then go after him.

The Pats didn't trade him to the Lions; they cut him and Detroit claimed him off waivers.

IMO, the new CBA should prevent that from happening.

Why the fear that he goes to the Jets? Do you think that he actually has talent that BB wasn't able to tap into? And this same well of talent will be allowed to blossom under the genius of Rex Ryan? I don't get it. He has sucked for us for years. Wherever he lands he will continue to suck.

He does strike me as the type of malcontent that would cheap shot a QB if he ever mistakenly happened upon him, so I suppose there is a reason to be concerned that he ends up with an AFC East team...but to worry about the Jets specifically, seems unnecessary.

Unless someone is willing to offer their 2010 3rd-rounder, Bill shouldn't trade him until after the draft. By then, the LB situation should be sorted-out enough to determine whether AT needs to stay or go.

This. Everyone is eager to throw Thomas overboard, but there's no rush to do so. It wouldn't surprise me if they cut him on the first day of the new league year, nor if they dump him over the summer a few months after the draft.

The general fear of him going to the NYJ (which has been solidified by Mike Reiss also) is that Bart Scott is still good friends with him, etc. He also recently came out as saying "NE has one of the ultimate defensive weapons, but fail to use him properly."

Since the NYJ have the same type of defense he was used to in BAL, and there are several of the same players who he had a lot of success with etc, many feel that the NYJ would be one of the leading candidates--which I agree with. After all, he did rack up 20 sacks in 2 yrs in Ryan's system. If there's anyone who would give him a look, or knows his strengths, it's Ryan.

Rex Ryan is also the type of coach who would absolutely welcome him back, as they have a good repoire and he has had success with him in his schemes. Ryan is also a coach who tends to listen to his players and their ideas and opinions more, and Bart Scott is a loud voice who wants AD there. Since the Jets have tasted success this year with a QB who turned the ball over close to 30 times (INT + FUM), they know that they can compete again with a strong defense, and will indeed be looking to add to their top 3 defense--which is obviously their bread and butter.

As disappointed as I was in AD's poor judgement of words and attitude at times, we all saw him dominate when turned loose in SB 42. As a matter of fact, almost all posters here were quite devestated last year when he broke his arm--as he was having a somewhat decent season last year. We all remember the Favre sack, etc.

I realize that I am likely in the minority, but in a perfect world, I'd keep Adalius next year and hope that he'd mend things with Bill. There are still 2 sides to every story, and there are still many who agree that he may need to be turned loose a little more. I believe he can still offer something to this team, who isn't exactly in a position to get rid of another starting LB at the moment. For all we know, they may have patched things up after the late season scuffle, and AD may have just rehashed the story during SB media week. Then again, it's possible BB can't stand him too--we'll just have to wait and see.

I realize the un-capped yr would be the ideal scenario to dump his salary etc, but maybe things aren't as bad as the media has led us to believe, and the front office may be a bit stingier than we realize, not wanting to waste the 5 million it would cost. I know if Belichick thinks he can still get something out of him, the decision may not be as set in stone as some think. It's possible we were forced to ask him to learn too much, or play where he just wasn't as comfortable this year due to the other LB personnel--which could change in the offseason.

If they cut him he'll walk straight to the Jets, talking all our defensive plays with him.

I agree with the poster above saying unless a third rounder is on offer, wait and see.

Excellent post. You can add me to those hoping he and BB sort things out, because he is still a good player (and if you got back and watch the Wildcard game, he actually showed a lot of hustle on the field), but I don't think it will be happen, and if the opportunity does arise where he can be traded for a Day 2 pick, take it.

give him to Al Davis for something... 2012 or 2013 6th rounder

he is not smart enough to engage in a "resending" effort to another team for a better draft pick.

Cut him whever it is most opportune to do so and hopefully least opportune for him to land with a new club.

Hopefully he doesn't "take our defense with him", but maybe if he does, that's not a bad thing given how bad the defense was and how likely it is to be replaced.

My bad you are correct

1.) The defense wasn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be.

2.) There is absolutely no reason for the Patriots to cut him at this juncture, or at all, really.

With regard to BB not using AD properly, a case can be made....

According to Profootballfocus.com....

AD played 601 snaps last year and rushed the passer 124 times. He had a total of 3 sacks, 3 Qb hits and 5 pressures which ave. out to a "impact" plays on the QB every 11 snaps.

By comparison, Dumervile played 880 snaps, rushed the passer 419 times and averaged an "impact" play every 7.6 snaps.

In theory, if AD rushed the passer the same amount as ED, AD would have 295 more pass-rush opportunities and as a result 26.3 more "impact" plays. Assuming that 27% of ADs "impact" plays are sacks, with the same number of pass rushes ad ED, AD would be on a pace to record 10 sacks, 10 QB hits and 15 or so pressures.

This is all Bill James nerd-hypothesis but at least mathematically you can make the case that BB did not use AD properly. If he played him more, he would have gotten more production. However the guy is in his early 30s. Not sure if BB felt he had the stamina to hold up. Also, how many of those additional opportunities would have been taken away from TBC who had a very good year?

BB has always said that the best time for trades is either the draft or right before the season during final cut-downs. If BB and AD can't get on the same page, I suspect that he'll be gone before the draft either via trade or released outright.
