Over on Football's Future, someone suggested this:

*****Trade*****
Washington Trades #34 Overall, and TE Chris Cooley to New England for #22 Overall Pick

Although it feels almost like "How can I avoid having to pick for the Pats," I'm not sure I'd say no if I were BB and Dan Snyder came calling with this.

I'd do it. We drop 12 spots in an extremely deep draft and upgrade our TE position with a 27-year old Pro-Bowler.

My only hesitation would be looking at Cooley's ankle.

That's a really bad trade for the Skins. It values him at about the 10th pick in the 3rd round. I'd assume they'd want at least a mid 2nd for him.

i said no cause the pats need a 3-4 DE and most if not all of the good ones will be gone by the 2th round. and tradeing for a TE that makes 4 million a year. and will pretty much be a blocker in the pats system. is not a good move.

I wouldn't do it. Cooley is a good receiver, but he can't block at all. Tight end is not an important receiving position in the Patriots offense, so if he can't block, he's basically useless. Unless the Patriots change their scheme, which I think they should, it's not that great a trade.

Keep the pick and draft an impact player. We can get a TE who can fill the job adequately later on in the draft or in free agency. As long as we add a wide receiver or two, we shouldn't need a big time receiving tight end.

I think we might be able to get Olson from the Bears for a lot less.

Why not but I don't think a receiving TE is a priority, the Skins were supposed to get smarter with the hire of Shanahan. I think Cooley is too good of a fit in Kyle's offense especially if they get a young QB.

It's not 22 for Cooley. It's 22 for Cooley + 34.

Eh, still not interested, I don't like Cooley, I might be tempted if a similar deal came along for Olsen.

THIS IS A SPECTACULAR TRADE FOR THE SKINS. Shanny wants a QB. At a top five pick there isn't really any worth while.
He gets his second first rounder at #22 and can pick Bradford or McCoy. It absolutely makes sense. I mentioned this a few days ago with the thought of adding Santana Moss as well. Perfect number three guy. 70 receptions in 2009 with a lousy passing game. He is 30 and his contract goes to 2011. They lose him next year anyway. Then if he does not work out we are not locked too. Cooley is good contract wise until 2013. Plus we get a top second rounder. Less money to pay out. We can still get a top rusher like Hughes or Wooten at #36.
The Skins need a RB, OT, DT KR , and LB.
The Skins used their third choice in the supplemental Draft. Snyder has the money and he could take a flyer on AD. Slater could fill a need as well. They need bodies and their draft choices are few. They could pick up a desperate need in Okung. Then they could still go back for McCoy or Bradford at #22. They also pick up a starter at OLB and a KR needed. I'd even throw in our 6th if it made the deal.

They might dump Portis. I might suggest S. Moss and Cooley and their second rounder #36 for our #22 and Maroney. Excellent trade for both teams.
Shanny liked Maroney.

Cooley would become TBs' Dallas Clark. He goes 250lbs. How much worse of a blocker can he bee than Watson. Cooley is a definite upgrade. Watson went out and after 7 games still had 29 receptions. Watson had 29 receptions for the year and will not win a blocking award.

Major upgrade!

Watson is a mediocre blocker at best. No loss there.

I'd take it in a second. We upgrade our passing game with a proven commodity and still have a shot at getting a DE or an OLB.

I'd make this trade, then turn around Washington's pick(#36) and our last 2nd round pick to move back into the first round and get the impact guy we need. Then we still have 2 high second rounders.

Cooley is available because he is no longer the best TE on their roster..... I wouldn't be interested in Cooley. He only seems better than he actually plays.....

Not a chance.

And for the record, Watson is a very good blocker these days. Maybe not elite, but very good. I think the team that signs him in free agency will be really pleased with how well rounded he is. No, he's not the most natural pass-catcher, but he does have immense speed for his size, and can really stress a defense, especially down the seam. He's the perfect antidote for cover 2, especially in the red zone. I like him a lot, and wish him well in his new home if he doesn't return.

Nope, Id rather draft a TE in the second. Gresham would probably be a better option in the passing game for us. Defense first.

I have my doubts as to whether Gresham will be available in the second round.

Couldn't have said it better.

If we go into the draft with 1 TE on the roster, I think it's a no-brainer. Teams will also know our weakness and probably take advantage like offering Cooley for a 2nd round pick.

If the Pats offensive scheme of the past three years isn't going to change for 2010, then all we need is a guy who can block really well and catch a little from time-to-time. There's likely to be several guys like that available in the 4th round.

If the scheme DOES change to re-emphasize the TE in the passing game, then we're better off getting someone like Dennis Pitta (who, apparently, gets open and catches better than many WRs) and teach him to become an adequate blocker. But Pitta is still probably only a 3rd-rounder at this point.

Either way, considering the depth in this class of TEs, I don't see the value in the Pats doing anything in the first two rounds WRT the TE position.
