Is there a RB on this team that is a lock for 2010?

Just looked at the RB situation and I really wonder if there is a true lock for being on the opening roster next season?

Fred Taylor is another year older and still chancy to take with his injury history

Laurence Maroney has been one dissapointment one year after another and since its expected by most prognosticators that the team drafts a RB in the first 3 picks I am not quite sure he is a lock

Sammy Morris has been another who has been injured and in and out of a shuffling lineup, while he has looked decent in some games,in others he has been bad

Kevin Faulk is of course just about every Patriots fans favorite and should be the favorite of the whole RB group to make it probably at a 98% chance, but with him getting older at 34 one never knows if a total surprise can happen

BJGE has been a player on the bubble for a few years and probably is a longshot to make the team

While most will say Faulk is a lock....is there really a LOCK otherwise?

I'd say that Faulk is the only lock out of the group. The others are either too old, too injury prone, or too unproductive.

I agree 100% with you on this. We certainly don't need both Morris and Taylor. Lets get some young legs in here.

Maroney and Faulk. Next question...

Maroney

He needs more time to be NEs go to guy carrying the rock. I know he can do it.

As much as everyone likes Faulk i wouldn'y say he's a lock. He's an old UFA, and the team will probably target a back with similar skills in the draft. I think he will be around at least 1 more year though, along with Maroney (due to his low salary).

If we draft a RB BJGE is gone, and probably Morris or Taylor, who ever BB decides.

Right.

Everyone is infatuated with BJGE, but there IS a reason why hes still the last guy on the depth chart, and only gets carries when theres no one else available: Hes not any good.

I'd love to see them upgrade Morris/Taylor with Chester Taylor if Minny doesnt tag him.

This guy has been one of the most underrated backs in the league for the bulk of his career. First with Baltimore, then with Minny. He is as well rounded as they come. Runs with power, catches exceptionally well, and is an outstanding blocker.

I don't know. Chester Taylor has spent his entire career playing behind offensive lines that are significantly better than NE's, and hes always been kind of a boom or bust guy.

He'd make a good Faulk replacement, but I think he'd be a terrible MOrris/Taylor replacement.

I see Kev as the only lock to return. Despite his age he's playing as well as ever, and simply is not slowing down.

I have no emotional attachment to the rest, although if they decided to keep Maroney and make him the feature back, I'd be for it.

I'd love to pick up Leon Washington, he'd be a nasty threat as a back and a receiver.

Yes, pity NE would need to give the Jest a draft pick since he's an RFA...unless we get lucky and they don't tender him.

But by the same token he's played his entire career running (minus this past season) behind HORRIFIC QB's. Defenses never had to respect the pass vs those Raven or Minny teams.

I'd say at this point in their respective careers, he is significantly better (and more reliable) than either Morris or Freddie T.

Plus he'd cost a pretty penny. RB's really are a dime a dozen in the NFL. Unless it's a superstar, that's a position you really dont want to see a team that has a QB/WR combo of Tom Brady/Randy Moss spend too much coin on.

why so we can give him 5 touches a game?

Maroney should stay because he is cheap and young. Unfortunately, he looks like a back up at best.
Faulk should stay because he can still catch out of the backfield, block and run draws out of the shotgun very well.
Morris is do damn injury prone and needs to go.
Taylor needs to go as well.
The Pats need to look in the draft for an eventual starter.

BJGE 2009 avg y/c 4.4
team overal avg y/c 4.1

only running back on the team with zero fumbles in 2009.
he also had zero fumble in 2008.

Nice subjective stats. Now for the whole story:

100 carries, 389 yards, 5 TD's, longest 29 yards, 3.9 ypc.

Maroney's stats for this year are basically double that.

As for the lost fumbles - he had only 26 carries this year. And the fact that they all lost one is more about the technique and coaching than the ability of the player. Maroney was never a fumbler before this year, and then all of a sudden lost four.
