I just spoke to Detroit Lions CB Phil Buchanon who told me that the Lions placed him on the trade block. He said he would take considerably less money to come and play for the Patriots and that all he wants to do is play for a winner and make big plays for that team. He is a great person with amazing physical attributes, and he did well in the Tampa 2 scheme despite having a history of playing well in man schemes. He certainly showed he hasn't lost a step when he caught AD from behind and forced a fumble when they played this season. What do you guys think of P-Buc in a Pats jersey?

I don't think he's as good as Bodden. Is he better than Wilhite at least? It also would depend on how much the Lions wanted in return. Could he be had for a mid round pick?

He was a very good #2 for Tampa in 07 and 08. He would likely be our fastest DB and he is also a valuable punt returner. In 76 games started he has 18 picks and 43 passes defensed. Seems to me like he could be a diamond in the rough as he has a unique skill set as a ballhawk and a playmaker.

He might be worth a look for a mid-round pick. I've always liked Buchanon for no reason at all hahaha.

I've said this in a few other threads, but this seems like the best place to discuss it:

How about a Maroney for Cromartie trade with SD? He's supposedly on the block and SD needs a RB with LT likely to be cut. LoMo shredded them in the 07-08 playoffs.

Both are considered to be underachieving for their respective teams and could benefit from a change of scenery. Both in the last year of their rookie deals. I like Maroney, but if we could get Cromartie for him I'd pull the trigger. He's big at 6'2 and still silky smooth in coverage. Great speed and great ball skills. I think working with BB would have him close to his 07 form. It's easier to find a RB of Maroney's level than it is to find a CB with Cromartie's talent IMO. Low-risk move as well seeing that Cromartie only has one year left. If he's good you can extend him. If he performs below standards, let him walk.

Are you kidding me? As long as Cromartie's knees aren't shot, a Maroney for Cromartie swap would be a total robbing of the Chargers! I would really like that trade if his health checks out. *knocks on wood*

Interesting thought. It seems one-sided in our favor, but not everyone is as weirdly down on Maroney as Pats media and fans. I could see the Chargers point if Cromartie has been exasperatinly underachieving for them, and if they remember LoMo in the playoffs. That would be a nice trade for both sides.

Dunta Robinson is who I want :)

Are you serious? Texans fans openly mock him, he has never recovered from his knee injury and he is actively playing up to the idea of having a long term Texan contract because he knows the free agency market wont be kind to him anymore, definitely not what we need.

I want him too, but I don't think he's going to be in our price range and I think the Texans will probably franchise him again - or they might actually be able to put an RFA tender on him and I wouldnt want to give up a 1st for him and pay him as well - I'd rather they sign Dameco Ryans if they are going to give up draft picks to sign someone and that doesn't mean I'm saying they should sign Ryans.

Didn't Cromartie suffer some BAD hip injury or something back in 2008 that's still lingering to this day and that they said would linger throughout his career?

And yes on Buchanon, if it can be done.

That'd be two years in a row we got a CB from the Lions heh. Even if we sign Bodden, he'd be a good addition for the sub packages. Buchanon would be a good pick-up depending on the draft pick. Maybe we could send a 4th or 5th, maybe even package a player like Wheatley. I think that's not necessary, but I just want Wheatley to be on someone else's IR.

As for Cromartie, I'd love to trade Maroney for him straight up, but I don't see it as a realistic trade. I'd love to be wrong on this though.

Wasn't it also a fact that Cromartie couldn't read at FSU? So let's see: injury prone, doesn't like to tackle, and probably isn't bright enough to pick up the defense. Yeah!! Let's bring him in!

We can't afford a 2nd for this guy, they are too precious.

Maybe give them Matt Light or Maroney, if they'll take it.

I like getting him and avoiding the big contract with Bodden. We don't need big contracts on players for the most part, too risky, look at AD super bust.

I'm pretty sure he's viewed as crap by the SD fans and would gladly trade him for Maroney.

I like the guy, super speedy, tall, only problem is he's all finesse. He doesn't like to tackle and you'll never see him light someone up.

If he can return to his insane interceptions and kickoff returns, why not.

Yeah, lets add another cover 2 CB without adding any pass rush. Great idea.

He'll look worse than Duane Starks. We need a pass rush. More CBs doesn't fix anything.

Not a huge Michael Holley follower or fan but I recall in an interview after he wrote Patriot Reign.. He mentioned that he left some stories out.. And one of them had to do with a rookie who came in for an interview during draft time and basically was rude and wanted to know why he didn't get 1st class treatment when he came (flight and limo).. Pats ended the interview very quickly and sent him home.. The player was Phillip Buchanon

:bricks:

Good find. Maybe (hopefully) Buchanon's attitute has changed a whole lot after this long in the league. Who knows?

BTW, Cromartie for Maroney would be a good trade/steal for the Pats (if we don't re-sign Bodden). We would have to throw in a draft pick or another player as well. Seems to me like the Chargers are going to be looking for a more of a Michael Turner/bruiser type to compliment Sproles.

It doesn't really matter what the SD fans think. It's what AJ Smith thinks, and I can't imagine him thinking both players are of equal value. Cromartie isn't a perfect player, but I think he's got more value than LoMo. If we can do this trade though, I'd be thrilled, don't get me wrong. I just don't think the Chargers would go for it.

Are the Pats only allowed to make one roster move all off-season? Why do you think acquiring a CB would mean they won't improve the pass rush? Sure, it means some resources went towards the acquisition. But it doesn't limit the Pats from drafting/trading to help out the front 7.

I hadn't heard of that Michael Holley story, but I know Phil is a pretty mature guy these days. I think that playing for the Raiders, Texans, Lions and Bucs will humble nearly anybody pretty quickly. He isn't looking for a pretty penny, or to be treated like a superstar. He wants an opportunity to contribute to a winning team, and he is willing to do it for less than market value.

Somebody PLEASE inform the Patriots front office that he is worth a look.

Also, I didn't mean this to be our lone off-season move. I just posted this because he is willing to play for cheap and he could be valuable to us as a PR, if nothing else.

He is a lot better than Duane Starks was when we got him, and he is no Fernando Bryant, either.
