Re: Giants cut Pierce; Should Pats make a run for him?

pierce who???

on another note, injury prone and too small

No. Too old, too slow, too arrogant for me. I despise this guy.

Let's not forget he was involved in the Plaxico Burress situation, helping him check into a hospital under a fake name.

I always hated him following the dressing in black for the death of the patriots dynasty crap. And now he's 2 years older, five steps slower, and fat.

No thanks.

I doubt it. He doesn't seem to fit in well for the 3-4 defense. Maybe if he takes an one year deal at the veteran minimum plus incentives so he is a low risk move, but otherwise, no.

The good news is that this is a positive sign for the Pats. Teams are going to cut veterans with big bonuses due which means they might be able to build the way they did in 2001-2004 with value veterans.

No more older guys, lets get a vet LB who is less than 27 - Pierce is 31 and by the season opener will be 32

We might as well have kept Vrabel if this is the case

A Veteran who is younger than 27.

That may be difficult...

Plus Vrabel had a $3m+ bonus coming and that exceeded his value to the team.

He's a fat @$$ big mouth arrogant POS. This scumbag has also been charged with animal negligence. Here's hoping to him never playing a down again in his life.....:eat3:

Why?!? Roman Phifer was over 30 when he got here. So was Seau (who played at a high level). Why would you have a problem in getting a LB over 30 if he is can fill a roll on this team and not cost too much? There aren't going to be many LBs who are younger than 27 available in free agency since they will all be RFAs.

The Pats problem isn't that they were getting old veteran. They are just getting the wrong old veterans. This year is the year that a strategy like that will pay off though since a lot of teams will be dumping veterans who still can play, but are not playing up to their huge roster bonuses due.

A lot of teams will be cutting heavy contracts soon without a cap floor to deal with. Many good veterans will be hitting the market which will drive contract $$ downwards. It's no wonder RB and BB have been reluctant to make big offers on long term contracts recently.

My initial gut reaction (along with other posters above) was "no way, don't want this jerk on the team after the crap he pulled in the Super Bowl".

But after thinking about it a little more, this guy was a consistently productive leader for both the Redskins and Giants. The mouthiness isn't great, but then again it's probably a matter of perspective. Pats fans loved Bryan Cox when he was wearing Patriot colors -- I'm sure other fans despised him.

The only question is what happened to this guy? He was a key leader on the '07 Giants defense, got mixed up in the Plaxico situation (lied to hospital, etc.), and then pretty much disappeared the next season.

Drop off in ability, or off-the-field backlash?

Right. You can't have your cake an eat it too.

The best type of FA that this team needs is one who can rally the troops and also contribute (hopefully start) over the next 2-3 years. Pierce is too small to play LB for the Pats, but his on the field leadership would be invaluable. Something we were missing badly last year.

Hey some logic, thanks. Nothing wrong with an older vet on the defense. I could give a rat's ass if he wore black, is arrogant, said this or that. Can he play football? That is the only answer that I care about.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Pierce, eh. Not so much. On top of the signing bonus, the Giants cutting him tells me that his injury might be a little more serious than is being let on. Give me Dansby any day of the week.

IF he is healthy, I'll take him. He could be a nice veteran addition to this team, and who gives a rats ass what he did against the Pats? What was he supposed to do? fear them?

We need a vet with some fire in his balls. IF he is healthy again..

Its time to throw this "System" ****aki out the window. This team needs leaders and playmakers. If Pierce can be one of those guys, lets not bypass him due to a "system" question. If he's willing to play Mayo's spot and free up Mayo to run around and make more plays, then lets do it.

What's the status of Tyrone McKenzie? Will he be back in time for TC?
