He coached to win, not to avoid losing. All the pansy ass sports writers couldn't wait to lambaste him for his ballsy calls. Like this crap article for example where they even take a swipe at BB:

Ehhhh, here we go. I, for one, thought that the onside kick on the kickoff was not a good call. If the Saints had lost that kickoff (which they damn near did), they pretty much put Manning in striking range, that game shifts to the Colts, and they probably win it. Was it ballsy? Sure. However, it is only considered "ballsy" because it worked. If it didn't work, it would have been stupid. I, for one, am glad that it worked. However, it's not necessarily a call that I agree with.

The onside kick surprised me a little but Payton said to win you had to take risks and he does.

Payton did say over and over on media day that he looks at the Patriots organization as a model on how he wanted to start the Saints organization to be a winning Franchise!

Well that's true. When Iw as watching the pile up I was saying to my dad " still don't like the call" . Just because I said it's something out of Belichick's book doesn't always means it's right. It's like saying you have a friend whos got balls and can come through in some jams but doesn't always make the right choice. Payton is a very young coach who hasn't been around long enough, but we as Pats fans would know. Years from now one day someone will say he too has become arrogant, etc. with such calls. The world has a very short attention span

I would go so far as to say that call won the game for them.

I would argue the exact opposite of what Chris Chase is arguing. If the Saints take the FG instead of going for it, they have to kick off to Manning who takes the ball around the 20 and has about 1:45 and 2 TOs to march down the field and we see a halftime score of 17-6. Then he gets the ball back to start the half and if he marches down the field again, the Saints are looking at a 14 point swing. At this point the game is almost out of reach.

Instead, the Colts got pinned back in their territory and have to play conservatively to avoid a safety which just takes a ton of time off the clock and a bad punt gives the Saints new life and a chance to close the gap. Going for it on 4th down essentially neutralized Peyton's odd's of marching down the field and probably saved the game.

That's intellectual dishonesty. ANY play that is poorly executed could have potentially horrible results. He PREPARED his team to be ready for every situation that could come up (like BB) and I'm sure that was one of them. If he didn't think his team could execute an on-side kick I doubt he would have called it.

i think he is talking about the 4th and goal call. i thught it was an easy call to make. kicking off to manning couldve been trouble. going and missing it made the colts run the ball 3 times.
i think the colts and caldwell shouldve thrown on 2nd and 3rd and short. they played conservative ,content to go up only 10 pts and lost.

Taking the 3 was not a good option going for it you expect to get back to the line at least so they are on the 1 and just want to get to half time have less options available to them starting at the 1 pretty much gonna be a run if you get a 3 and out the punt will give you 50 yards at very best needing to only get 20 yards to go for that kick anyway. While knowing that they will be kicking to one of the most dangerous men in open field. Which can cut that 50 down or make them kick more cautiously. It also shows great faith in your defence.

I think that actual 4th down play call was stupid every time there was a TE right and meacham went in motion to that side it was a 24 or 26 dive I called it as soon as I seen the motion and they had ran the same play in the red zone only a few plays before hand.

I flashed back a bit this game to 2001... Payton knew he'd have to take some chances to beat a scoring-machine opponent (albeit less heavily favored) with a defense that is not truly blooded/tested. So he gambled. This reminded me of what Belichick said, recounted in "Education of a Coach".

The "keepaway" game in the 2nd quarter warmed my heart as well

Don't like the onside kick even though it worked. He would have put his team in a hell of a spot if they hadn't recovered that. I think he felt they were not going to win the game unless they took a big gamble like that to turn the game. He's a riverboat gambler and he won this one.

going for it on 4th was the easiet call. i really dont know why people think so much abt it. but 1st and goal from the 2 they should have just run it up the middle 3 times. The first down pass really was horrible call leading to the eventual 4th down.

My friends and I were all in agreement that outside of Brees, he was far and away the MVP of that game. Not bad for a guy that has only made 22FG in his career.

Sanvara the only stats I could find on surprise onside kicks says that in 06 more than half were recovered by the kicking team. I am sure sean Payton would have known it was better than normal. I would hope that my guys would cover 10 yards with a running start faster than the front line of a kick off team would read react and cover 5 plus typically not such good hands. However the kick was a poor kick and went 15 yards and took a lucky bounce and some poor handling and it paid off.
