So, pretty much all year I felt like we were two years away from truly competing again. And I know teams always look a little sloppy in the Super Bowl for many reasons, but after watching tonight's game I couldn't help but feel we aren't as far from the top as I originally thought we were. One very good offseason and we're right back in it.

Of course a great offseason consists of: 1) keeping Wilfork here; 2) bringing another good wr to town; 3) drafting two starting outside linebackers; and 4) drafting a possible starting defensive end

No reason to share your good vibe.
The Ravens beat the Patriots, lost to the Colts, who lost to the Saints.

So what does last season have to do with this season? :D

BTW, we also beat the Ravens, only lost to the Colts by 1 point, and went 10-6 which easily could have been 11-5 if the last game meant more to the team. Considering this was a rebuilding year for us, that's not too bad. But as of 2 hours ago, that became LAST season.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

There are no great teams in the NFL right now. Thats' why the Patriots can contend next year with a few adjustments and additions, even though they'll probably still be a terribly flawed team.

It's definitely not out of reach. It's just disconcerting because of the problems presented by the labor agreement. Also, if the Kraft's decide to chase the $$ and run a very conservative off-season then this team is done and probably won't be any better than 10-6 for a very long time. I'm hoping this isn't the case as the Pats have always spent up to the cap.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

The Patriots have as good as chance next year as anyone else (and better than most). The Saints were a very mediocre 8-8 last year so the Pats can turn it around.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

1999 Ravens: 8-8
2000 Ravens: Super Bowl Champions

2000 Patriots: 5-11
2001 Patriots: Super Bowl Champions

2001: Bucs: 9-7
2002 Bucs: Super Bowl Champions

2002 Patriots: 9-7
2003 Patriots: Super Bowl Champions

2006 Giants: 8-8
2007 Giants: Super Bowl Champions

2009 Saints: 8-8
2010 Saints: Super Bowl Champions

When will people learn the notion that the path to the SB always always takes years of gradual progression is just absurd?

It can take one year to go from being bad/mediocre to being SB champion.

This was exactly my feeling after this game, I mean we all knew these were the two best teams in the league pretty much all year, and really, how far from them are we? In my view, not that much.

Never. They'll never learn that.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

With all the talking head shenanigans of there being no "shutdown defense" in the league anymore, I would love for BB to come out guns blazing and punch some teams in the mouth next year. Is the d really that far off? Sign Bodden and I actually love our secondary for the first time since Hobbs has played legitimate minutes. Butler will step up next year (thought he was amazing for a rookie no 2 this year), and I like where the S position is headed with the youngins. OLB is a need. Draft one, maybe find a way to get the bs with Adalius straightened out (humble pie to this disaster?), and bring someone in and all of a sudden that looks better. Not sure why, but I think McKenzie will surprise us next year, maybe even starting by the end of the year, pushing Guyton outside. Of course theres Mayo, need a true SILB to get him where he belongs, is Dansby really an option for us or a pipe dream? Get him here and that sures up the LB situation pretty well, if not, turn to the draft. Brings us to th d-line. I want Wilfork in town, tagged or signed. Period. Draft somebody in the 1st at DE, and that leaves a question mark at the other DE. All said and done thats a pretty solid defensive unit. A little more creativity (loved the "organized chaos" approach this year) and the defensive unti would be head and shoulders above last year with 1 or 2 of the picks contributing consistently by the end of the season.

Turn to the offense. I want a big ugly in the 2nd, with a late (6/7th) used on a developmental guy. Bring in a younger (<31) reciever FA, and go after Ben Tate in the draft (my binky, I want him in the flying elvis), and take a flier on a good blocking TE in the later rounds. The O-line is interesting, as if Kaczur can get thrown inside (RG for neal if he isnt back) and we hit on a center in the late rounds (for two yrs from now), the unit would be solid. Kick Light to Right, Vollmer at Lt with Mank (Tate/Taylor/Maroney having a field day running to the left), Kaczur/Light on the right, what is not to like? Keep Baker around as I love the way he blocks, and hope the late round pick steps up. moss/FA/Edelman/Tate(?) should be able to get it done, and theres always Faulk who could be split a little more often instead of in the backfield.

The obvious big needs are DE/OLB. Bring in Dansby or a true stud in the 2nd and ILB is a strength again. O-line needs some youth in the wings, and of course I want Tate. Grab a WR in the 2nd and bring in a FA and Wr has some promise. while there seems to be a lot of potential holes, it seems there are a litany of potential answers (of course draft isn't the ideal answer, for right now impact, but the guys get picked for a reason). I'm quite optimistic in any case, and think we will certainly be playoff contenders next year at a minimum. Maybe I'm still just riding the Peyton blew it hard high lol. Anyways, heres to next year!

As I sit here drinking my kool aid from the glass half full, I agree with you.

I think there is still talent to do the job. This year it was inexperienced as Bill changed up defense on the fly. However, it was the offense that lost most of the games by an inability to get a first down in second halves. The offense still had and has the talent but they were plagued by inconsistentcy. Someone different had a break down on key plays. A bad throw from Tommy, a drop from Moss, a missed block by Kazcur, confusion between Koppen and Mankins, it was something different each time. And yes, I do believe there is predictability to our offense. Maroney in, generally a run, Faulk in generally a pass, don't try passing to the tight ends that must be a no no, and run the count down to the last second so the defense can come off the ball timely, and my personal favorite, lets force the ball to Randy.

All things that can be improved, so do not despair, those of you that think Bill is a failure because he hasn't won a Super Bowl lately.

Ah, one last slug of kool aid. In Bill I trust.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

I never originally thought we were that far off. No team in the NFL comes without flaws. We have a few concerning holes (WR, DE, OLB, MLB, OG if Neal leaves) but 4 day one picks and lots of cap room. The problems can be fixed on paper. I'm still not quite sold on the coaching staff though under BB.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

Of course!!
Worst thing you can do is judge a team by the last game they played. Too many Patriots fans did that this year. The Patriots were absolutely horrendous against the Ravens and a team with obvious flaws all year long. Yet they won their division with 10 wins AND what's really scary is if Tom Brady gets 2 or 3 1st downs in the 4th qtr of a couple of games (Colts, Jets, Denver game etc) this team might have gotten a 1st round bye. Amazing isn't it??
*Don't care what the stats say, Brady had an UNBrady-like year. Very understandable given that he missed a year with a severe knee injury, had to fight the psychology and plain old rustiness of overcoming that injury on the field, his wife was pregnant and as we found out recently they had their baby delivered at home during the season.
These were 1st time life events for Tom and MAJOR distractions.
These will NOT be distractions next season. I'm convinced the "old" Tom Brady will be back next year. Tom now knows his knee will hold up for an entire season and he's been through the baby born at home situation and if that comes about again he'll know what to expect and how to handle it time management/emotionally wise.
*Jerod Mayo, defensive rookie of the year, got hurt early in the season and was simply never the same player.
I expect Mayo back really strong next year.
*Draft/sign a couple of legit pass rushers. That will immediately improve two areas on the defense. It'll be amazing how much better the secondary will perform when they don't have to hold coverage for 10 + seconds on every play because nobody is pressuring the QB.
*Julian Edelman can fill in quite adequately for Wes Welker. Find a legit 3rd receiver and the passing game will be just fine.
*Bill Belichick had his worst coaching season since he's been in Foxborough.
I think BB will bounce back strong.

As I wrote a few days after the end of the season - we have our HOF QB and coach in place.
The Patriots WILL BE FINE!!!!

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

the problem is that without a CBA in place, I doubt you'll see the pats offer anyone any big contracts (even brady) until they know how the future will look.

not good, not bad.......it is what it is.......that's the way the pats operate......it is wise from the bottom line standpoint and for the longer term, but next year will be a real question....as it will for many other teams.......

don't be suprised to see alot of these guys who are FA's and don't get tendered (franchise or RFA) sign one year deals by the time training camp rolls around

with the uncertainty, don't be suprised to see the pats bring back faulk,TBC,jarvis green for a year......tender everyone else, bring in draft picks, and just go into 2010 that way.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

I still don't get this "the Pats are two years away" stuff. This team is one year removed from a 11-5 record without Brady. They went 10-6 this year and won the division. They are in good shape to be active in free agency whether there is a cap or not. They have 4 picks in the first two rounds of the draft. There isn't any dominant teams in the NFL.

Personally, with the right moves this offseason, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 13-14 win season. Then again, with the wrong moves, I wouldn't be shocked to see an eight win season either.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

On or about August 15th, we were looking at our roster as having the most talent ever.

So, looks can be deceiving.

I just bought Madden 10 and I'm using Galloway, Seymour, and a bunch a guys who aren't here extensively. The team was loaded.

Or so we thought.

In 2001, the GMs and coaches around the league voted the Patriots as the least talented team before the season.

Pretty much. And honestly, if Welker hadn't gotten injured, and Brady didn't have a litany of injuries, and Moss wasn't banged up - they probably could've overcome their flaws this season, too. No team is good enough on both sides of the ball right now to not be beaten on any given Sunday.

Re: Are we not as far as we originallly thought?

Next year hinges on where TB is. If we had 2002-2007 TB, this team is 16-0 to 14-2. People seem to forget how dominating the Pats were for the first 57 minutes of the Colts game.

With ACL's a two year injury, I think his performance was commendable this year. Next year will be the test.

Likewise, I like seeing BB more involved next year with the defense. There will not be anymore "shutdown" defenses because league rules render a "shutdown" defense very tough .

So, since BB will be HC+DC, who will be coaching the Offense ? O'Brien ? Then, you;re back to same predictability. Sad to see this team has gotten away from what we did best.....spread it around and the opposing D did not know week to week who to focus on. Right now its Moss+Welker and then the crickets chirp(no TE, no RB, no 3rd WR).

Unless the philosophy changes on Offense, this team will continue struggle(anomaly was 2007 season but that aint happening again)

Watching Brees/Saints throw to 8 receivers last night was a clear blueprint Sean Payton took from Pats of old. Pats need to look in their past to succeed in future, else mediocrity fellas
