Cold, Hard Football Facts.com: Saints vs. Colts: the pulled pork of pigskin

The Saints are better in every indicator but one. And, of course, they topped the league in three different indicators. The Colts were essentially solid across the board, while the No. 30 spot in DHI obviously skews down the average. But Indy was spectacular in no area.

The numbers tell us much of what the eye test tells us about both teams: the Saints were dominant for much of the year. The Colts won because they’re a team with few real weaknesses (third-down defense was their biggest flaw); they won because they were well coached; and they won because they gutted out wins in tight situations.

It adds up to two every formidable teams.

At the end of the day, though, we believe success in the NFL revolves around one major factor: success in the passing game.

And in this area, one team clearly has the advantage. Let’s look at several key elements of the passing game:

Re: CHFF makes their SB pick

Seriously, how did Manning steal the MVP once again? I didn't realize that Brees had a passer rating TEN points higher, 5 fewer INTs, almost identical team success. and a RECORD completion percentage. It's starting to get absurd how Manning is favored by the press. I also thought that Philip Rivers was better this season; he carried his team on his shoulders to 13 wins. I really hope that Brees outplays that hick in the Super Bowl.

Re: CHFF makes their SB pick

brees was better than manning in every major indicator of success:

  • he threw more touchdowns (league-best 34 to 33)
  • he threw fewer ints (11 to 16)
  • he produced a much higher average per attempt (8.5 to 7.9)
  • he produced a much higher passer rating (league-best 109.6 to 99.9)
  • brees set the single-season record for passing accuracy, completing 70.62 percent of his passes (manning completed 68.8 percent).

Yeah Brees was absolutely hosed. Hopefully he takes home the Superbowl MVP instead.

I'd imagine both teams would be pretty bad without their QB, but I really think the Colts would have 2 wins max without Manning. So in the technical definition of Most Valuable player, I'd choose Manning

I have no problem with Manning winnng the MVP this or last year. The MVP means one thing and on thing only, who is the most valuable to HIS TEAM. Essentially, its an award based on a hypothetical question. What team would be worse without player "X"? It really cant be proven since we have no idea how the Colts would be without Manning. It does not mean who is the best. Brees has been the better QB then Manning the last two years, especially this year. The stats clearly show that.

Re: CHFF makes their SB pick

Now, I was a big defender of Brady in that monstrous Brady v. Manning thread, but I do agree Manning deserved it this year because it was his best year.

What rankles me is his earlier MVPs over Brady. He had better numbers back then, just like Brees did this year, and I remember his 12-4 Colts were actually favored over the Patriots for a game AT Foxboro when the Patriots were 14-2. In the Super Bowl that year, Brady completed 33 passes, threw for over 350 yards and made two huge come from behind drives in the fourth quarter including a 2-point conversion. Brady had no running game, his defense gave up 29 points in 32 minutes, and they gave up 325+ passing yards to Jake DelHomme.

And after all that you're telling me Manning gets the MVP over Brady?

You can't have it both ways. Either the MVP goes to the guy with the best stats or it goes to the most valuable player.

Re: CHFF makes their SB pick

Manning won the MVP because the Colts were down numerous times this year in the 4th quarter only to come back and win the game...because of Peyton.

Re: CHFF makes their SB pick

If I was the Dc of the Saints I would call for an all out blitz the 1st 3 defensive plays of the game. Even at the risk of Manning throwing an early TD pass it will be well worth the risk. The reward being Curtis Painter plays the rest of the game. :D:D:D

very well said. I still think Bradys best year was 2006, when he had Reche Caldwell, Doug Gabriel, Jabar Gaffney and an aging Troy Brown and had them 1 minute from the Superbowl. I wonder how many other QBs could have done that with that supporting cast.
